Detroit’s THELMA label is right up there with the world’s most respected & collectable labels; especially the coveted PROMO’s which are particularly hard to find and sought-after. So when this 1964 double-helping of Northern Soul comes along in utterly impeccable condition, we are pleased to have it gracing these pages.

From a Northern Soul standpoint this 45 bristles with the golden touch of Don Davis a session before the emerging GROOVESVILLE music took off, his productions even then just pulsated with the sound of the Motor City, strong, tight and vibrant with the 16 year old Rose belting out two magnificent Motownesque winners.

“I Can’t Leave You” has been a firm favourite for decades now, but today’s listening confirms “Someday” may actually be the better Northern Soul.

Let’s be realistic, finding nearly 50 year old Thelma Promo is as near perfect condition as you could ever dream of, is a rare happening.

Little Joe Cook I'll Never Go To A Party Again

A 1963 Margaret Nash composition with all those ingredient we’ve come to expect from this lady who wrote so many fine 60s Big City tunes for husband Johnny Nash.

So check out yet another of her creations. This is a seldom-seen but supremely infectious Popcorn/Northern Soul hybrid. From the prolific Philadelphia based Little Joe Cook, who can also boast a huge Northern Soul contribution of his own.

Lovers of the big orchestra production will adore this horn & string backed big outing on which Little Joe adjusts his vocal-pitch “Peanuts” falsetto to a more growling purr as he compliments the dirty-trembling-trumpet assistance.

This has for decades been a classic Belgium Popcorn spin without crossing over to the Northern Soul - mainly because all those Belgium guys hovered up any available copies some 4 decades since.

Dead-right for an enterprising NS DJ to pick up on and give it a long-overdue British airing…
