Last night the lovely and extremely talented 97 year old musician and record producer died. An expert saxophonist he played with Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton as well as being a regular in the house bands of the Apollo and Savoy. He toured with the first ever Motown Revues and recorded The Manhattans, Lovettes, Lee Williams and the Cymbals, Pretenders, Norma Jenkins and many others.

He was incredibly kind, friendly and funny and very appreciative of his European admirers

Bad news, but for once, someone has died at a decent age, R.I.P Joe. The Carnival sound is a distinctive iconic sound coveted by many collectors, I have around 30 on the label and love every single one of them, how many labels can you say that about, that oh so soulful deep sounding sax evident in many of the recordings always accompanied by great soulful vocals.

You did a great job with those Kent / Carnival CD's Ady. No wonder Joe appreciated us Europeans (mainly thanks to you I'd say).
