Trip To The North Soul (Icebreakers Northern & Modern)

Recommended Posts

Hi, Soul Explorers, hope your week's going well, is it time for a vinyl treat? If so, here's a list of Northern & Modern 45s to whet your appetite. If you see anything here that you'd like to buy then please send a reply or phone us on 0161 834 7783 to order or reserve an item.

1. Love Is Everywhere - CITY LIMITS (TSOP).........Mint-.........Those who know this will tell you it's as close to Marvin & Tammi you could ever get, sound-wise. Imagine if they'd been asked to record a Philly Sound dancer and that sums it up, pure perfection....................£15

2. Girl Overboard - DOROTHY MOORE (Malaco)............Mint-.........beautiful 1978 Fredrick Night-Sam Dees song.................£8 (can also be found on the new Kent CD "One In A Million: The Songs Of Sam Dees...£12.99, available now)

3. Warning - CLARENCE CARTER (ABC)...............Mint-.............very un-Clarence Carter-like as he gives us a cheerful mid-tempo dancer that seems more suited to the Four Tops of that period (1974), a classy spin indeed..................£8

4. So Very Hard To Go - TOWER OF POWER (Warner Bros.)............VG++.............think of this as an end-of-night gem, you won't be doing a disservice to anyone saying "terrah" with this beauty.............£6

5. I'm Never Gonna Be Alone Anymore - CORNELIUS BROTHERS & SISTER ROSE (United Artists)..........VG++.............almost impossible to do but this outshines "Too Late To Turn Back Now" in the heart-melting department, gorgeous like a warm Spring morning..................£10

6. Hold On - THE RADIANTS (Chess)..............VG++...........take the stress out of DJ-ing by spinning Northern beauties like this, you'll get more than a few likes..........................£15

7. Take It Or Leave It / Beyond the Hurt - CORY (Phantom)...............VG++..........a recommended 1976 Modern Soul dark horse that has plenty of ability to please, a winner in waiting...................£30

8. Keep Saying - CHARLES WRIGHT (Philips)..........VG++............big Wigan Casino favourite, more often heard in Mr M.'s but who can deny that warm, nostalgic glow it gives you...............£30

9. You Can Be My Lover - BEVERLY CROSBY (Bareback Records)..............Mint-.............Modern Soul dancer released 1977 and managing to sidestep that disco beat quite nicely, crossover's the word here..........£25

10. Somebody Please - BILLY KEENE (Dottie)......................VG++....................£20

11.Why Play Games -  BOBBY TAYLOR (Playboy)...........Mint-...............Detroit Spinners-type 1975 mid-tempo dancer....................£20

12. Free For All - PHILLIP MITCHELL (Jay Boy demo)........VG++...........£20

13. The Real Thing - BETTY EVERETT (Vee Jay)........Mint-............£15

14. With These Eyes - THE FABULOUS PEPS (Wee 3)................Mint-...................£75

15. Jack In The Box - DAVID MORRIS JR (Buddah)............Mint-.............£40

16. It's Waiting There For You - REPERATA & THE DELRONS (Mala demo)............VG++..............£25

17. Love Don't Come No Stronger (Than Yours And Mine) - JEFF PERRY (Arista)...............VG++........£25

18. Heartbreak Society - THE RADIANTS (Chess).............VG++.................£60

19. We're In This Thing Together - PEACHES & HERB (Date).............VG++...............£15

20. I've Got To Be Strong - CHUCK JACKSON (Wand)..............Mint-...........brilliant Northern Soul dancer, proper all-nighter sound kicking any unhappy moments right out of the stadium....................£15

Many thanks for looking at the list, enjoy your weekend to the max,

Cheers, Carl (Beatin Rhythm).
