This weeks snarling Big Mama R&B-Rattler comes in the form of a very elusive Bobby Rush project.
In true Soul-Dominatrix style Big Ella whips up a storm with her defiant strutting vocal lashing against the ardent horns; this is full-on dance-floor penetration, there will be no hanging around the bar, when this truncheon of a tune paddles your ass straight onto the dancefloor…
An R&B commander that compels you to dance - this is BIg Mama Soul at it’s most bruising.
Rare? Bet your ass it is….

Kittie Doswell
Just A Face In The Crowd
Crazy About Crossover?
You are!
Well this uncomplicated slice of the “Crossover Sound” from the streets of Los Angeles will absolutely delight. A 45 that already enjoys a strong reputation for rarity with it’s pure-quality is there for everybody to hear.
Kittie “Miss Soul” Doswell tackles the choppy hammond arrangement with an equally rippling vocal that softly “gravels” on all the right notes, as the addition of the floating horns ,elevate the tune yet another notch.
Crossover, a much-misunderstood Northern Soul genre, does not get any more convincing than this. Kitty is right up their with Ella Woods, Almeta Lattimore, Alex Brown etc as a Sister who delivers a tune with the consummate ease demanded in these mid-tempo masterpieces..
1973 two years earlier than the disco-disaster that led so many artists away from Soul. This is an unspoiled, from the heart dancer.. so refreshing to hear and shuffle to.
When it’s sung like this - “Crossover” - Yes, I’m totally crazy ‘bout it.

Mr. Soul
What Happened To Yesterday C/w You're Too Good
Do records of this calibre need embellishments..
I must say I’m motivated enough to pull out every thinkable vinyl-superlative I’ve ever thought of..
But it’s not required because this 45 sits in the top 50 most-wanted - least seen - most respected Northern Soul 45s ever played..
Ridiculously RARE - Crazily sought-after - and so damn deliciously, ludicrously, insanely, preposterously, implausibly, stupidly-fine NORTHERNSOUL!
Richard Searling’s former Maurice McAllister’s - Your Love Is Slipping Away - “cover up” of course….and since those heady days… most collectors have yearned for a mere sniff of a copy..
Now’s your chance…
Some light surface marks - but as you can hear plays loud clean and true..

Ernest Mosley
Stubborn Heart C/w Leep On Loving Me
A Northern Soul classic with a huge reputation for being a “Thinking-Man’s” oldie, that has now been an elusive capture for fully 40 years.
From the first note this record explodes into pure Northern Soul. Blasting horns, Woo-Woo girls precede the intricate vocal of Mr. Mosley. Who has the gift of changing key at will, with the brass accompaniment never out blowing his expressive style.
Perfect instrumental breaks, punctuate this dancer at all the right times and those girls coos just get stronger and stronger..
THISISNORTHERNSOUL that will catapult many back to “The Pier” and the groundbreaking sets of Ginger Taylor, Ian Dewhirst, Poke etc. It was a Northern Sea imperative play. Having said that The Mecca, Casino & Yate were also simultaneously jolting to its power.
This copy has two clean labels and only two light turntable retrieving surface marks stop this beauty getting a much higher grade - as you can hear it plays LOUD clean & true. Like it always has done…

Billy Floyd
My Oh My C/w Time Made You Change (your Mind)
Without question one of the least encountered 45’s on the legendary Philly label - and what an heavy-weight slab of Northern Soul it is too; with BOTH sides giving-up stand-out Northern Soul crammed with heaps of blaring-brass and just as lively bustling n’squealing Soul-Sisters enhancing the two arrangements.
Let’s start with the side that was played in the mid-70s; A thumping East Coast dancer with compelling Latino influences on the trumpets and Billy’s highly tuned vocal bouncing on every beat; Soaring horns are present throughout and the girls timely choruses just add the finishing touches, you’d think..but no, from outta nowhere comes a xylophone break. Everything is in there crafts one of the fullest arrangements you could every wish to hear.
So to the B-side which if it’s possible is an even better Northern Soul dancer, which in the late 90s & early 2000’s received spins from a couple of very prominent DJ’s notably Butch & Carl Willingham.
This side is pure-distilled Northern Soul with no attempt being aimed at commercial viability. All the same ingredients used to full effect - extra-shrill girl penetrate the horns and Billy again reaching those high notes with ease..
TWO great sides, magnificent condition and Turin-Shroud RARE!
