There is a white demo of   The Olympics as those titles but there is only an issue

of the very very very rare mis-press with the alternative ( I would say better) mix of

'Same old thing'

 

Didn't think that was the title for Mirwood 5520 or is that 5521?

That alternative mix of The Same Old Thing...? Is there a soundfile somewhere? Don't think I've ever heard that. Thanks!

It is a different mix, most of the strings are missing, especially in the inst break. The mispress (in terms of vinyl mastering and production) all over the place.

 

The A side is labelled "The Bounce" (66-3052-A) - The runout etching is 66-3052-A. So far so good, however it plays the "Same Old Thing" (Alt)

 

The B side is labelled "The Duck" (66-3053-B) - The runout etching is 66-3052-B. So that doesn't line up. Add to that the fact it plays "The Bounce" rounds off a very bad day in the office.

 

I'm sure this mispress is a 70's job, via Soussan. It is much the same in style as the 70's Ciggarette Ashes etc. with that miniscule hint of silver in the blue label.

 

I can post a sound file directly here, but are we allowed to these days ?

I know a few years ago mods were killing the direct downloads (apart from sales), but I've seen more than a few in recent times.

 

If not, just PM me and I'll "bounce" it to you.

Indeed the most noticeable difference is the lack of tambourines and other percussion on this version as well as the absence of strings in the second break in particular. I agree about liking the stripped down version. Both are great and we put out the correct 45 take but I'll certainly get a good tape copy of this on a comp soon now.

 

As to the legitimacy of the release and whether Soussan may be involved, I don't think so. The master tape box actually had the title written down incorrectly as 'The Duck and has it down to be the A side so it really was a monumental cock up as the A/B labels are the wrong way round too. Obviously sent to mess with our heads 50 years on.

 

What I particularly like about this version is the way the girls sing "way" in "brand new way", they hold the note just a little bit longer so the B vox are different, whether the lead is is hard to know, I'd guess not as I can't spot anything specific like the "way" but some singers could replicate a performance take after take if they'd rehearsed it. Thanks to all for pointing this out.

Ha, I've just found this in my notes to the first Mirwood CD, so I knew about it but didn't fully appreciate the differences.

 

"Mirwood then made a mistake with the next single, and instead of going with one of the new songs, plumped for the remake of ‘The Bounce’ backed with their version of ‘The Duck’. It failed to chart and by the time their next single came out in early 1967, the damage had been done, despite it being the excellent double sider ‘The Same Old Thing’ / ‘I’ll Do A Little Bit More’. A Mirwood release sheet of the time had ‘The Same Old Thing’ listed as by Walter Ward, the group’s lead singer and in fact the only member on the recording. It was to have had an instrumental version of the song on the flip by Walter Ward’s Band. Though that wasn’t as imaginative as the eventual release, it would have gone down a storm at the Casino! Some copies of ‘The Bounce’ single are actually an alternate, sparser version of ‘The Same Old Thing’, which certainly wouldn’t have helped it to sell either."

 

The idea of a vocal / instrumental Mirwood release as by Walter Ward instead of the Olympics is fascinating too. And it was covered in a contract for another two Jackie Lee titles Tin Pan Alley and Anything You Want, Any Way You Want It which of course were unreleases till Soussan booted the second as I'll Do Anything and we put out Tin Pan Alley on our Jackie Lee "Mirwood Masters" CD.

Thanks Mike and Jordan hopefully it will give it more looks. I spent half an afternoon on this when I should have been doing my deadline stuff! Same Old Thing is such a great recording I didn't mind replaying it about 30 times
