Just noticed this on jm’s

why is it (-2 rpm) what does this mean? Is it specifically this record? Is it to do with the recording itself?

Is it a reference to pitch control to say the recording is done at -2 ?

It can improve a record quite a bit if it sounds a bit to fast at normal speed.  It’s only subtle but does make a difference.

You can adjust playback speed on youtube by pressing the cog in the top right of the video

Could well be mate, but it seems pointless as it’s a fast tune anyway, would -2 make much difference?

...just a typo on johns site?...

The picture above, not sure that’s a typo, but I reckon Dylan is correct on it being a pitch reduction.

Slightly off-topic, which might get me a telling off from our friend Mr W Butcher. By mistake I played the single Mamma I Wish I Stayed At Home by Deniece Chandler at 33rpm.The result was a really nice mid tempo track with a sort of smoochy 1990 feel. Neither the vocal or instruments sounded obviously wrong, the main give away was the line "sixteen year old girl wild as the wind". If I knew how to, I'd put a clip on, could someone else do it.

Care to elaborate ... ?

Thanks for that, it's  something I never knew. I tried slowing the speed on YouTube but it sounded nothing like the record at 33rpm. Her vocal was slowed but sounded to be at the same tonal range. The record at 33 sounds like a smooth male vocalist.

It's pretty dramatic slowing it be 50%, and it always goes weird and echoey

Pretty certain the -2 is a reference to speed reduction on a standard 1200. Personally if I play well know classics I usually use standard tempo but if I'm playing more upfront I can get rather freestyle with the varispeed😁

It is a pitch reduction on speed a lot of styles use it the popcorn scene pitches up and down to what the dj feels makes it a better dance tune
