I've just unearthed a long lost video of a play I taped off BBC2 in...wait for it....1983! (Did'nt think I even had a video then...)

It's called Out on The Floor by Debbie Horsfield and is set at an all nighter at a Casino type venue.Tracks featured include I Belong to You,Captain of my Ship and Sad Girl.Its ends with somebody muttering the immortal line..'Its getting light now'..as the heroine dances to the last record,which is 'There Can Be a Better Way' by the Smith Brothers.

Anybody remember seeing this...or was anybody involved,because judging by some of the dancing featured there were some genuine soulies out there,not just actors.

Was this the one where somebody died of Black Bombers od at end?? If so Dave Evison was consultant on this, he did say at time (I think) thay they listened to some of his advice but ignored others. I remember bribing my parents to go out on this night as heard there was lots of drug references in it!!

Yes,Jock,that's the one....judging by the various shots of run-down mills,etc it has taken more from the infamous This England documentary than from Dave Evison..

I remember it 'cos it was on the Friday before the national scooter run to Dunbar. At some point the heroine kicks some bloke in the nuts before returning to the dance floor to boogie her troubles away! I don't recall anyone od'ing mind you. Where did they get black bombers from in '83?

A bit of trivia associated with this thread.

I think Debbie Horsfield was a bit of a beauty queen and quiz show hostess at the time. I also think she was then married to David Davies (now Football Association supremo).

tell you what, the soundtrack (all Grapevine) is fabulous and the recreation of the Casino is so good I can't actually believe it's not real...but the play itself is boring and uses too much poetic license.

Pete can you bring list of dvds to Prestatyn, remember seeing list and there was quite a few that I fancied, particularly the ones with the TV progs on, Chasing Rainbows etc.

And for anyone reading I will never play them out at soul nights will file them clearly as non originals

I Remember It I Watched It With My Dad As A 15 year Old And cringed all The Way Through.

Reece Dinsdale Was In It ,He Was The Copper In The Footy Hooligan Film I.D,And Wasnt The Other Geezer In Bread ?

I remember the play, i remember it being horrendous with a couple walking onto the dancefloor swinging their held hands, then dancing together!! I remember most of it looking like a BBC studio, very bright lighting and very few people. Wish i could see it again

I didn't know who it was at the time, but not surprised it was Debbie Horsfield of Cutting It, in that series the main woman's mum and dad were casino goers, had soul posters on the wall of their house, and one of the kids was conceived round the back of the casino by a black (unnamed) singer.

Er.. the wife had it on

At the time this caused a flood of letters to Echoes, all of which I have in the scrapbooks along with loads of other stuff, and the play featured many actors who later went on to find fame, as stated, including Tara Fitzgerald. Debbie Horsfield did write Cutting It as well and featured the Ritz if memory serves right in an episode of that drama. For those looking for a decent insight into our twilight world - don't bother! For those looking for light entertainment drama, it's OK.

I can remember watching this and being quite annoyed because i thought the dancing was crap!!! i also wrote a letter to "Echoes" voicing my annoyance,the northern tracks they used, all original Grapevine i collected and still love to this day . Del xx

Can I just add that although the writer in question may have also done 'Cutting It', the scene where the guy and his wife go the The Ritz and dance to The Champion is actually from a series called 'Clocking Off'.

True, it was this play that set my negative expectations for Once Upon a Time In Wigan 2 decades later (sometimes my cynical side gets the best of me) and I was expecting another skip of kak but was very, very pleasantly surprised.
