............................. "ON HUBERT STREET!"

............................at The View Nightclub Frodsham nr Warrington

"ON HUBERT STREET!" as a mainly underground Black American Music event came about after my first visit

to New York in May 2002, here I attended the legendary Sunday day thru night-time soiree of BODY&SOUL .

The three men in charge of proceedings were Francois Kevorkian, Joe Claussell & Danny Krivit .

BODY&SOUL was modelled on the infamous Loft parties from earlier in New Yorks clubbing history

- no alcohol and a large, clear sound system.

Within the walls of club Vinyl on Hubert Street in Tribeca was a fantastic mixture of people - black, white, gay, straight,

some high on drugs and some just high on life.

The music played that night was a superb mix of Soulful/Deep House, Classic Soul, African Rhythms, Funk/Disco,

Latin and Experimental Beats - the ever present siren wound up on the breaks to the delighted whoops

and hollers of the faithful on the dancefloor (SYOTDF) , who, hands aloft smiled almost gleefuly.

It was a complete story, told masterfully and I realised that night, although I was a couple of thousand miles

FROM home, I felt truly AT home.

I returned to the UK inspired.

Two weeks following my return in June 2002, the BODY&SOUL collective had an altercation

with the management of Vinyl and BODY&SOUL , as a Sunday event in New York City, was no more.

"ON HUBERT STREET!" that week was born - partly as a tribute to that nights wonderful ethos, partly to try and recreate

a part of the feeling BODY&SOUL had given me.

We began running al fresco 'OHS' parties which began at noon and ran through 'til midnight with a barbecue cooking,

families invited for the day (I think we ran four of these monthly events).

At this point winter came and we looked around for a new home to house us temporarily over the colder months.

We eventually settled on THE VIEW NIGHTCLUB in Frodsham nr Warrington, which I had djed at many times

at soul events over the years, it's slightly worn appeal lending itself particularly well for our purposes.

And there we have remained ever since.

Over the last couple of years "ON HUBERT STREET!" has been lucky enough to play host to some our worlds greatest

producers and dj's,

including from the States -

KERRI CHANDLER (NYC),

CARL DUPREE (PHUTURESOLE RECORDINGS NJ),

JOHN PIERCE (CHICAGO),

BIG WILL (NYC) &

QUENTIN HARRIS (DETROIT)

from Sweden, the MAW utlised producer and dj

MARKUS ENOCHSON

from the UK

DAVE LEE (JOEY NEGRO/Z RECORDS),

BILL DAVIDSON (SOUTHPORT WEEKENDER),

NEIL PIERCE (MOS),

BOB JEFFRIES (SOUTHPORT WEEKENDER) .

and forthcoming

DURON TARIK (NYC)

FANATIX (NEIL PIERCE & AARON ROSS)

There are a pool of resident dj's that play at OHS - Dave Jackson, EMS, Paul Stuart, Paul Hawkins, Deano and myself, Barry May.

Encompassing most of Black America's forms of dance music from 1970 to the present day, I feel we do more than a little justice

to BODY&SOUL 's ethos.

OHS is a small night, relatively, attracting between 100-150 people from all over the UK and abroad

(France, Greece, Milan, NYC), to share in its close knit roots and community.

We regularly feature in the Top 5 Club nights in The Guardian newspapers magazine.

At the end of the day - No glitz, no glam - "A BASEMENT, A RED LIGHT & A FEELING!" - now that's "ON HUBERT STREET!" .

A group of us OHSers returned to New York in March 2004 to share in the celebrations of the final BODY&SOUL party

ever to be held at Vinyl. It truly was a mind-blowing week-end and we hope to keep that dream alive "ON HUBERT STREET!" .

Forthcoming we have from NYC -

DURON TARIK (LeFunken Productions) - BH SUNDAY MARCH 27TH

and the hottest UK remix team presently -

FANATIX (Neil Pierce & Aaron Ross) on BH SUNDAY MAY 29TH!!

Which just happens to be Mr. Pierces birthday - "Baton down the hatches son, we're in for a rough ride!"

If my innocent if self-indulgent blather intrigues you to know more, please drop by and say Hi at www.onhubertstreet.com
