I'm asking a question here that can only be answered by the older lot I think - but - are there any nighters that play Northern, be that oldies or newies/modern, in a way that you could see kids wanting to be a part?

We all know quality Soul, yes - but I think what I'm trying to say is that when we were lads and lasses, it was the uptempo, urgent sounds that appealed.

There are obviously ways that a set can encompass certain records and still leave the listener on edge.

We've all been there.

Are there any nighters offering this today?

It has to be exciting to entice youth surely?

Long in the tooth searing soul understanding and a lifetime of pain follows the sweat based dancefloor excertions that youth allows you?

Are the more energy sapping , danceable Modern 70's/80's Northern releases the key to the longevity of the scene?

Please don't go on the age old 60's defensive thing, the Willie Mitchells, Roscoe & Friends and a myriad of others will argue that for you...but are tracks like the aforementioned used correctly anymore?

Northern appear to have at last understood quality, whatever the tempo, does the scene have the bollocks to understand that its music seems to be glazing over in a haze of quality hip-acceptable swayers?

As if echoing my question, my CD has just decided to play an old Brian Rae Wigan play - Herbie Mann's - 'Waterbed'.

May not be seen as Northern in certain quarters but certainly an All-Nighter play that swung me.

All I'm trying to say - that is in my limited view of the NS scene over the last ten years (I've never stopped buying btw), and I know it stands in a different corner these days, due to many factors, is that when I have turned out on occassion, it seems a little over dependant on tracks that are dependant on your years....and not smack in the face dancers....of course I understand that the body of the scene is getting on a bit...but I can't, in my humble opinion that is see this scene dragging in the much vaunted new blood.

I like so may others grew up on The Invitations, The Vibrations, Williams & Watson etc but tracks in the vein of Creative Source, King Tutt, Brainstorm, The Nite-Liters, Willi J & Co da di da cut the mustard to me as a 16 year old.

Are DJ's sets open to this kind of dancefloor 'fire' these days?

if you want new choons and to dance your arse off all night get yourself to the southport weekenders ! but book early as sold out in weeks !

Of the two or three nighters i have been to lately they played uptempo oldies most of the night, which is ok I guess, I love it myself especially the oldies that don't get played too often. On the other hand I've heard far too many boring tunes (IMO) that send me to sleep, in the quest for new music I guess, but two steppers drive me mad. As for the Willie Mitchells I'm sick of hearing it and the likes, but my youngest son loves the uptempo oldies and wouldn't want anything less when he comes to a soul night or more now than ever when he plays them at home. Why? because although he likes the music he doesn't want to be seen hanging about with a "bunch of old fogies"

I'm glad I read the rest of this thread because, Chris you have hit the nail on the head. it doesn't matter how great the music is, what "young person" would really want to go to a place full of people their parents age? I wouldn't have, any more than i now want to go to a place full of under 30's.

It doesn't attract equal numbers...i'm 24 & have been going to nighters since i was 17. I've been brought up on the music & i love it. Theres nothing else that comes close for me. I have found though that theres more people my age down south rather than oop north (i'm from the midlands! )

When i've taken friends along to local soul nights they love the uptempo oldies but not much else. I personally have found that my tastes have evolved from the 100mph stompers & will probably continue to do so as i discover more & more fantastic sounds.

The problem is as has already been mentioned my friends don't understand why i spend my Saturday nights dancing all night with people my parents age!

I quite agree. The people that i've met on the soul scene are the nicest bunch of people you could want to meet. The age thing is irrelevant to me.

We have had two great young dancers at the Pilsley night, both have won dance compertitions at Blackpool and Skegness, both have now quit the scene for things their age.

Hence me using the word Should.. I used to, and still do think like that to a degree, there are a few city centre venue's attracting younger people and if you were at King George's Hall last sat you would have seen more younger ones than ever.. I can name a lot more under 30's on the scene than ever before too, people who are regular's.

(I'm trying to be positive...not convinced I'm right but it's a nice way to think!).lol.

is a club in which we try to make sure the music is as 'up front' as can be. Like the tagline says, expect 'maximum strength boilers'!!

And both myself and Giordano are 28, so we're on young(ish) side and are trying (something slightly different from a traditional soul allnighter, admittedly) to keep new people coming through onto the scene.

So the answer to the original question (hopefully) is 'don't worry, its happening'

The last Northern event i attended, i found it very clickie(not freindly,soulfull,like it used

to be).All these people were looking at me as if to say "what's this youngster doing here?"and i'm 42.What i can see,in the last ten years,certain promoters have made the

scene the new bingo night for the over 50s,and are raking in the cash,with books,videos,dvds on how to be a soulie!The playlists from too many "JIMMY SAVILLE"

djs were stale,the top 100,that nearly all is availiable on cd.Like Stafford never happened.It's only from reading playlists and venue reports from this site,i can see a

better place!and can actually get excited again!

Northern soul is unirversal and appeals to all ages,rather like the mod scene,if people

were maybe a bit more welcoming to new blood,it would be a start!

Otherwise like when you see people with those Wigan skirts and baggies,they will become the new Teddy Boys of this generation,and how many of them do you see today?
