Has anyone got any information on Lindy Stevens recording of Penny Gold. I first heard it on one of the Kent LPs in the 80s, can't remember which one without digging it out. It is a nice pop song that would be easy to dance to, sounds like a white lady singer.

Anyone know when it was recorded, label, etc and was it played at the Casino or elsewhere?

Not sure on the year but released on US Decca and also a Casino play.

I realise this record gets an enormous slagging as emblematic of the white dross which came to pass as Northern Soul in the dark days, but I've always loved it. It's a really great song and worth a thousand Stormy Winters to me. I think the aspect of it which people don't like is the production: the strange scratchy guitar sound and the double tracked vocal.

There was a film called Pennygold and I always wondered if this was from the soundtrack, in fact I think I watched it once just to see!

The film Penny Gold (nothing to do with the record, sadly) is actually a British 'thriller' set in the high octane world of stamp collecting (the eponymous stamp of the title) so strangely appropriate to our scene. I've never seen it but apparently it has been variously described on imdb as "dull", "dreary" and "dismal".

Thats bizarre because I did the same thing when it was shown late on ITV god knows how many years ago.

I fell asleep half way through so never did find out if it was played

Thanks everyone for the information on this record. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes it. Will keep my eyes open for it on vinyl, hope it is a cheapie. But I won't bother with the movie, lol.

Somehow, in the annals of my mind, I seem to recall it was originally a Levine play!

Pretty sure I'd heard it (and probably owned it) before the casino.

Lindy Stevens also had an LP released on Decca which contains Penny Gold.

Doesn't matter if it's not soul, it's a great pop record, great to dance to ....

and it's no less a soul record than Johnny Caswell !!!!!!

hi geoff...got a copy for £15 a while back mate....seen for 15-25 since and should be ble to pick one up easily..
