DJ's, where and when did you make your debut and how did it go??

Mine was at the Albany Hotel, Glenrothes, around 1995 and I could hardly place the stylus on the 45 due to me shaking like mad, after a while I settled and ended up having to be dragged away - kicking and screaming!

my first expeirience was pirate radio,the gear was set up in the attic of a huge house where it had been converted into bedsits,i,d been shown how to operate all the system the day before,so come saturday morning i arrived, got all set up,play box ready e.t.c.then 8.00am ..commenced my 2 hour spot,after 5mins with a record on the turntable i shot downstairs knocked on a door where i heard music coming from and asked the guy if he was listening to he pirate show,which he said he was .great ,i shoot back into the attic to continue 2 hour northern show..and at 10 finshed my spot..only to realise when the next d,j took over that i had,nt switched a particular switch over and my broadcast had,nt gone out live,but a prerecorded reggae show had been repeatedly playing....what a downer..but i did,nt let it deter me and have dj,d since on many occasion,albeit not recently

mine was my bedroom when i was 13 i had 3 records but hey we all have to start somewhere and i was fantastic

I started DJing at friends parties at first...then instead of a venue, me and a friend started putting on outdoor events on the north wales coast in old abandoned mines in the middle of nowhere with generators etc haha...bear in mind this wasnt soul...

Mine was at the Legion Accrigton, spring 1974. I took over from Tommy Balmer who was moving away from Accrington. I was shitin it, anyway armed with a small box of singles, a few LPs and a shit load of emi,s got off Pete Lawson I got my debut under way. It went ok, but I didn,t use the mike. Within six mouths I became a OVO DJ, but thanks to Pete for helping me get started.

I stopped DJing in the early 80,s went I sold my U S singles. As I have said before my sawnsong was at Bank Hall Miners.

a mod night in dundee , in total that night i done a 4.5 hour set .....never been nervous about playing though regardless of venue or line up

early 90s for me ..... playing a few indie/britpop type tunes to warm up for a mates band. not really nervous about that. have been a few times since.

Me - 10 years ago!!!!

For my scooter club, we put on a charity ride out and in the evening a free do..

free do meant no real dj's but we talked Jim Cox into doing a set for us (Ska) and a member of my club said he would do the rest.. any way the club members lent him what records and LP's we had.. all was fine until he went off in his own little world and played "its all in the game" followed by some thing else along them lines any way people started moaning and being the club No1 I had to sort it, so he walked off left me there...

looking back wish he hadn't would have saved me a lot of money

and yes i still get nervous i've always thought when it becomes the norm for me then it wouldn't be the same...

most nervous i've ever been..

an all dayer in London Herbal.. my spot was between Keb Darge and Brian Rae... but it all went well....

1979 at a church hall in knaresborough, had a few friends from over harrogate/knaresborough way about twelve of us so including me there was 13 of us in

local do put on by Tony Gordon AKA count bassey from Blue Rhonda a la Turk around 1982ish. he had me double decking with another guy and it was different to say the least i had full on stompers and the other guy was into the more mellow sounds. the crowd didnt know what to do as we had one stomper - one slowy, one stomper - one slowy

later DJ'd at an all-dayer in southampton for a guy called Gary Todd (good man). I think he was concerned as I was in the usual state that i used to get in and he stood behind me throughout my set (wondered if he was waiting to catch me if i fell over) but it all went very well judging by the dancefloor.

p.s. no nerves as i was always medicated back then.

true story to go with the first time DJ'ing. it was the first time for the guy i was double decking with and he was nervous as hell. my mum turned up at the do and she was tripping. just as he was queing up a record she flashed her boobs at him and asked if he could give them a spin!!!!! he mis-qued the record

Double decked with a few girlie's,me and Dawn Brown great set at the 100club and DonnaD at Boogaloo with Ady's records never let that stop me tho',nice busy dance floor.......... what about some girlie's then,any out there with djing experience wanna' tell us about your first time eh!!

First soul nite pemboke halls walkden in the northern room stood in for dave evison while he was on his hols the main room was run by the then piccadily 261 from manchester so was a bit nervous that was summer 78.First niter xmas 78 carousel niter manchester for martin christie now there was a character.

First time for me was a local Roller Skating rink full of Rockers around 65/66 lol, i used to go on a Tues/Thurs and Saturday and was friends with the owners son who knew i was collecting records and told his dad that i could do better than the bloke doing it.

Me being 14/15 was'nt afraid of anything till the Saturday afternoon i ended up in this Glass Fronted Box and was told ok lets see what you can do, played mainly chart stuff but was hooked on it and after my half hour stint was over i was so relieved that i had,nt cocked up i could'nt skate afterwards.

After getting the odd few compliments from people my mates dad got me on for an hour every Saturday afternoon after that, great times and great memories.

Mine started just by chance really, i did an all girl DJ charity night for "Birmingham Childrens Hospital" last June. And since then we have done two more charity events, and i was asked to DJ at a few venues, and now we have our own venue. But have to say i had no intentions to want to DJ at all. But love it with a passion now.

i'm expecting a few nerves in a couple of weeks though .... we'll be playing warm up sets for paul weller (apologies to the weller haters here for mentioning him!) and ..... erm .... girls aloud. will be the biggest crowds i've played to (approx 7 - 10000 per gig).

tend to get nervous too on the rare occasions i've been asked to play other clubs .... out of the comfort zone i suppose.

my first time was about 12 years ago at a scooter rally, was asked to stand in for someone who hadnt turned up, had to use someone elses box of delights as I had none with me, they were all alien too me even though I knew the records if that makes sense!!! Hands shaking litle a s******g dog ... but I did it.... loved it and have carried on ever since ..... opened our own venue 5 years ago and never looked back...

My first spot at a venue with more than 500 people in attendance was with Tony Class and his CCI Mod Meeting All Nighter at Blackpool Winter gardens around 1987.

We had the smaller (adjacent) room from about 03:00hrs onwards - I remember playing Bobby Valentin and Carl Underwood with classics like Jackie Edwards and Freddie Houston .

There was this bloke called Tony Sckokman (A Nice bloke in fact) in the big room at the very same time, playing popular/chart Motown to a jam packed floor!!!!

I remember feeling really pissed off in the morning, because all the Mods preferred "Wade in the water by Ramsey Lewis" instead of "George Freeman and Kenny Shepherd"

In fact, I never went to another CCI event again!

That's when the Soul thing really started for me !

Went to Ibiza in 1993 - thought 'I could do that' so got some decks and 'choons' and started mixing up house music, plus doing radio shows. First time in a proper club I was doing warm up and was a bit nervous. First session, hardly anyone in so I played loads of loud 'drummy' stuff so you could hear it from downstairs in the street!! Well the other DJs were all dancing to it so must have been OK. Never looked back . . . well maybe just a bit

Got back into 60's stuff at a reunion in Lincoln a few years ago. I WAS nervous about that one, playing for a 'back in the day' crowd but I have been asked back since so must be doing something right!

Yeah Kenny...not on the northern scene though...more your modern/contemporay soul...with a bit of lovers reggae thrown in....maybe one day ill give it a whirl...but dont feel confident enough to give a REAL northern night a go yet...get my head bitten off in here as it is...wouldnt want a posse of angry punters chasing me down the street because I put something strange on the decks haha

Ive got loads of Frankie Knuckles...used to love some of the old house DJs...people like Todd Terry, The Masters at Work, Tony Humphries and David Morales had a very heavily influenced soul vibe in all their produced music.
