I've recently started to try and re-purchase all the records that i sold some years ago.

This usually involves paying people in the US lots of $. And then when the records finally hits these shores, paying a load of import duty & VAT etc.

Does anyone know if there is any "legitimate" way of paying less VAT & duty? These charges are sometimes crippling (£300.00 in the last week alone)

Yeh,dont buy any records

Try asking the sellers to put the value of the records on the customs forms as less than 30 dollars then you shouldn't pay anything. I know Craig Moerer is happy to do this and I've had stuff from other sellers who have done the same for me

The only way to do it Phil is to contact the seller and get the seller to put a low value amount on the customs form thus avoiding import duty, sorry there is no legitimate way of getting round this..

£300 duty though thats a lot of money spent have you won the lottery?

If you have the record sent insured then it has to state the value it's worth, if you have it on the customs slip as $20 when it's $2000 then you only be able to claim $20.

I always take into account what I might have to pay in custom charges when buying, otherwise that price you've paid may turn out not to be, and then you may have paid over the odds for something.

I don't know for the UK but to Germany you can't send insured from the USA. Only registered. Some think that the customs slip has to be the real value in case the parcel gets lost. That's not correct. If the parcel gets lost you only get the respective "standard" compendation, regardless of what had been stated on the customs slip. Most US dealers/ebay sellers know that but simply ask them to state $30 maximum if in doubt.

As has already been said, the only way round the duty thing is for the seller to put a low value on the front of the package, a few dollars.

Also if it`s sent insured with the full value on the front, customs take great interest and tend to keep it for a few weeks and dont inform you that they have it. You wont know whats happened to it till it arrives.....It`s happened to me twice..the records arrived a month after posting, you also the added joy of paying loads of duty, as you`ve already found out.....believe me this is no good for your sleeping patern.

For dearer items I ask the seller for International Express Delivery with a low value on the front of the package. It can be tracked and will arrive a few days later....it`s a touch more expensive $20 to $30 but I think worth it.

i won a 45 for $238 + $8 p&p about a month ago.

record came with a big invoice packet slapped on front,inside was a insured form with the value in full view of $238.

the guy was trying to be nice by paying for insured himself.

got away with no custom's tax,THIS TIME.........
