Got me thinking about some of the stupid things

i've done in the past regarding records.

Coming home sh*tfaced one night then dropping and standing

on a Shirley Lawson Backbeat Demo vertually snapping it half springs to mind.

Then there was the night at Wigan when after a very profitable

night in the Casino (Dont Ask) I bought:

Detroit Land Apples

Bobby Williams (Only Got Myself To Blame

and Pain Stain

Got gabbing away in that little car park across and promptly

left all three on the wall and drove off to God knows where.

Back in 1979 I think, I was chatting to a chap I knew (Juddy?) about an imported Crown Heights Affair LP he was holding. He said he really liked the LP, but it was actually the third copy he'd purchased!

Apparently he'd accidently "sat on the first one" while drunk - and gone straight out and bought another - then following a blazing row with his girlfriend a few days later, she'd savaged the new copy with a screwdriver! (nasty!)

last year was flying back from Sydney after a weekend, went through the xray, put all me things in the plastic tray, coins, wallet, phone & everything else, put record box on the conveyor, went through the metal detector, girlfriend goes through & as per usual sets off the bleeper much to my amusement. Got her sorted out started walking down the causeway to the departure gate, flight had been called, just to realise that I'd left my record box on the conveyor.....ran all the way back just to find security moving the box into quarrantine, luckily the girl on the machine recognised me & I got it back without any fuss......must admit I was bricking it, the thought of what could have happened if I never realised until I got on the plane.

That wouldn't surprise me at all LOL. I can remember you being at the Central with 10p and a Mars bar on a Friday night, then seeing you everywhere throughout the weekend - Va-Va's, Mecca, Casino etc and you'd still manage to come back with records on the Sunday!

Think I've told this story before but when I took Sam to The Scala nighter at Kings Cross back in the 90s, he was walking up the stairs and let go of his record box. It went tumbling down the stairs for what seemed like an age. Major gasps and "oh no's" from all around - but it turns out everything was all right.

This may be the ultimate record disaster story. It's from the late Dave McCadden's excellent Soul Galore fanzine from 1997. I cried with laughter the first time I read it. I'll attach it as a PDF as it's quite long.

I remember buying a load of stuff from Arthur Wright for Ady C & myself and running over them all with my car handing over a bag of rattling plastic to Ady at the Dome !!!

Yesterday lunchtime got home just before the wife and saw that postie had left me a little parcel,

well you know that exitement feeling you get (yes you do ), so I'm trying to unwrap this very well

wrapped parcel (loads of card and 3 miles of tape!) before she arrives , anyway could see

her walking up the street and in my haste to open the parcel managed to snap the 'kin record

in half !!! All because I didn't want her to know I'd bought 'another bloody record'.

$15 down the pan !!!

not a record but this reminded me of my brother dropping his tenor sax down the esculator at kings cross tube after busking !! ....

a bit of damage and had to keep playing till he could afford to get it fixed and ended up giving himself a hernia cos of the extra effort !

buying the soul galore instrumental version of ive got something good has been my worst record disaster

other than two broken tunes in two weeks thru the post ive been lucky....doin a reggae 'blues' (illegal allnight pay party) in stoke once with two youngs lads 'chatting' on the mic....in the commotion..dropped a 12" copy of the big tune of the moment 'bandelero' by pinchers,seemed to drop in slow motion and landed on its edge...breaking into many pieces...still got it as a reminder of a top night miles from home

Thats story of Richard's Jades reminds me of the one about Richard's copy of Billy Harner "I got it from heaven" which he dutifully lent to another DJ, and said DJ said "post it to me" .

It never turned up and got lost somewhere in the system. You would think that after the Jades incident Richard would know better than to lend anyone his records.
