When The Spinners signed to Atlantic in 1972, they were a respected but commercially unremarkable singing group who had never had a top-ten pop hit -- despite having been a recording act for over a decade. However, under the helm of producer and songwriter Thom Bell, The Spinners would chart five top 100 singles (and two top tens) from their first post-Motown album, The Spinners (1972), and would go on to become one of the biggest soul groups of the 1970s.

The Bobby Smith-led "I'll Be Around", their first top ten hit, was actually the B-side of their first Atlantic single, "How Could I Let You Get Away". Radio airplay for the B-side led Atlantic to flip the single over, with "I'll Be Around" hitting #3 and "How Could I Let You Get Away" reaching #89.

The 1973 follow-up singles "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" (led by Smith), "One of a Kind (Love Affair)" (led by Wynne), and "Ghetto Child" (led by Wynne) would cement the group's reputation, as well as further that of Bell, a noted Philly soul producer.

Following their Atlantic successes, Motown also issued a "Best of the Spinners" LP which featured selections from their Motown/V.I.P. recordings. They also remixed and reissued the 1970 B-side "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music" as a 1973 A-side. In the midst of their Atlantic hits, it crawled to number #91 US.

The group's 1974 followup album, Mighty Love, featured three Top 20 hits, "I'm Coming Home," "Love Don't Love Nobody," and the title track. Their biggest hit of the year, however, would be a collaboration with Dionne Warwick, "Then Came You", which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming each act's first number-one hit.

The Spinners would hit the Top 10 twice in the next two years with the Smith-led "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)" (Billboard #5) and the Wynne-led "The Rubberband Man" (Billboard #2). "Games People Play" featured guest vocalist Barbara Ingram, and would lead to a nickname of "12:45" for bass singer Jackson, after his signature vocal line on the song),

Last year I purchased the American Import - Spinners - The Chrome Collection which is a hard back book history cum 62 track 3 CD set released in 2003.

All the above tracks are included along with Truly Yours, I'll Always Love You,What More Could A Boy Ask For, I've Got To Make It On My Own and I Just Want To Fall In Love. Also some nice slower ones especially Sitting On Top Of The World.

Please you liked the Rhino CD and like you say an underrated group.

I can remember Track Of The Cat but not much else solo from her at that time.

I don't know if the Spinner's Wake Up Susan is too commercial for the ATB dancefloors but this is a belter of a record.

one of my favourite spinners tracks is that, have the uk issued 70s greatest hits some where also bought a spinners live casette when in the states in the 70s,think a guest artist was on then came you ,will seek it out.

I grew up with their Motown stuff and then purchased the wonderful Atlantic debut album featuring Ghetto Child,I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love etc,and whilst buying occasional records of theirs tended to buy a lot of other philly stuff like the O'Jays, Harold Melvin, Intruders, Trammps etc plus also spent a lot of money on travelling and buying northern records at that time.I have many favourite soul groups of which the Spinner's are included, but I think some people especially younger ones are more familiar with the later output like Working My Way Back To You and Cupid type stuff which maybe is not a true reflection on the group's talents.

A particular favourite of mine is 'Love Is Such A Crazy feeling'...to place it in a time-scale, an Earlestown Cricket Club play, early 80's.

Just done a tad of Spinners Googling on the back of this thread, was Frank Washington (ex-Futures) the same Frank Washington responsible for the Arthur Fenn 80's Bradford killer 'Ice'.

We were just talking about how great "It's A Shame" is the other day on another soul board. I love that song, almost perfect. I really like their Motown stuff but apart from a couple of Atlantic tracks, their 70s output doesn't really do it for me. I appreciate it, but not enough to keep any of it in my collection for long.

100% correct, I have every album they made on Atlantic, all cheap as chips and all highly recommended

Which version?

Back in 1973, Motown decided to try and cash in on The Spinners new found fame with Atlantic records and dubed a Thom Bell style drum beat onto the original song and put it out against "One Of A Kind".

Some vocals were also removed from the original to give the song an instrumental break, also a Thom Bell trademak.

And no sooner do I read this thread, then a TV ad pops up for a "Best Of The Spinners" album from Asda............

So now available at your local Asda......

Used to go to Earlsheaton Youth Club around '68 - think Tony Banks was the DJ at the time.

I have to say i am a fav of the Detroit spinners. I have some albums by them can't remember names. Think one is from 80's and my fav tracks is It's a shame. What More Can a Boy Ask for, I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love

One of my favourite groups "I'll Be Around" & "Its A Shame" would not sound out of place in any crossover/modern set(in fact I'm sure Sam played the former at an Orwell a couple of years ago)

Theres many a good tune tucked away on thier albums " Just can't let you get away" from the 2nd? album is a case in point.

Phillipe Wynne RIP had a minor solo career after leaving the group in the eighties albums on Sugarhill and Cotillion
