February 21, 200916 yr James & Bobby Purify had the big hit, but there are many versions around of it. Dan Penn's original version on MGM is great as well. He actually sings "I'm The Puppet" in his version.
February 21, 200916 yr In my opinion no reading of this song matches the keening purity of Dan Penn's original, but I love Marvin & Tammi's version from their "Easy" album too, where it's given a slick midtempo dance treatment. James & Bobby Purify cut this a couple of times: the version which was a UK Chart hit in the early 70s was by James with a different "Bobby" I seem to recall.
February 21, 200916 yr Dionne Warwick great version, and another one aswell forgot who tho'. I have this U.K. DECCA F.12451 DEMO NEIL LANDON I`M YOUR PUPPET / I STILL LOVE YOU Also MERCURY 6167 324 JAMES & BOBBY PURIFY I`M YOUR PUPPET / LAY ME DOWN EASY a Different Alternate Version if I remember correctly as already mentioned Edited February 21, 200916 yr by 45cellar

I also find it comes in handy for removing troublesome stains and getting stomes out of horses hooves, myself... I agree with Mr. Penn himself that James and Bobby's is the best version, incidentally. Although, as is suggested elsewhere in this thread, Dionne Warwick's is lovely too.

I think James & Bobby Purify's version is the best too, more so the 1966 version taken from the James & Bobby Album written by Dan Penn and produced by Papa Don. One of the most definitive 6t's southern country soul albums ever!!!
