Reading a tread on here about pressing 45,s ,It made me wonder what happened to the metal stamp part of the pressing [not sure what the proper name for it is] I know different techniques are used now and to be honest i dont know how its done,But iv got a memory of the plastic going in to a stamp with the record inside out bang , there it is the record ........... but what did they do with the stamp after the run was finished ,I sure some one on here knows ,

so what happens to the stamper? are they all distroyed then after the run is finished ?

I suppose you can ask to have the master stamper mailed to you from the pressing plant you use, but the few times I have pressed 45s, the master stampers have stayed at the pressing plant in case I wanted to press more copies of that 45. I never have done any represses of those 45s, so I guess the stampers are still with the pressing plant or has been destroyed by now. By the way, a stamper wears out after a while and a new one has to be made.

I talked to joe archer about years ago and he told me that about once a year the scrap metal guy would come around and buy up his old stampers that the artist didn't claim. i guess the metal in them is worth a few bucks. he also told me some of the old stampers wouldn't work in some of his newer machines.

I'm gonna stick my neck out here.....you didn't happen to take any pics of Joe and yourself did you?

also, even if they are not messed up from the original pressing, the stampers are not like sturdy pieces of metal that will easily keep, they are like flimsy pieces of flexible metal that are easily bent up, etc. For example, I've found stampers in a producer's box of records, all bent up, no way would they be usable. I don't know if people think of them as permanent things (like a 'master') but they're not.

Dave, sorry, I didn't get any photos. he was a perfect gentleman in fact he gave me a tour of the place. I think his son still runs the business? at least he did a few years ago. with my interest in records i asked a lot of questions....like did you save a copy of everything...i think he said only a few. i can visualize him not wanting to tell his customers he was taking records home. I remember the large closet full of tapes that were unclaimed. he actually let me take a few home to reuse but there was nothing really exciting on them he made sure they were fairly old. there must have been several hundred reels of tape in there. he showed me the barrels from reclaimed vinyl. they would punch out the label and chrurn up the vinyl into little bits and mix it with the virgin vinyl. he also seemed to keep a real good filing system and i was able to get a couple of contacts out of him rather quickly.

THANKS EVERY ONE VERY INTERESTING ,IF THEY ARE SO FRAGILE THAT MAKES THEM WORTH EVEN MORE I WOULD SAY ,JUST THINK OF ALL THE GEMS THAT WERE MADE THEN TURNED IN TO SCRAP TO MAKE A CAR OR A BAKED BEAN TIN .
