I've just seen a case where different parts of the records are grading separately i.e. vg at the beginning, ex in the middle and so on. Seems a bit odd to me as I'd have thought the usual way was to give an overall grade then mention any particular flaws like a couple of pops, cue burn 5 seconds etc. To mind doing anything else defeats the point of grading.

In my mind, if a record plays through mint, then the last 30 seconds it jumps around like a kangaroo whos got scolded knackers, then its fcuked.

If its got 10 seconds cue burn at the start it's fcuked.

and any record that's fcuked is fit only for the bin or sticking on the inside of the lid of your record box.

I appreciate a seller may be trying to provide as much info as possible but I think rather than write "Plays VG+ on intro, EX-/VG+ after that, EX- after that" as I've seen today, I'd just put a sound clip up

When the sales thread was changed recently someone did suggest having a grading system. I think it would be very helpful if we all had one system to use on here. Some of the unplayable shite that I have bought on here where the grading suggests otherwise is diabolical to say the least

Soundfiles are good but I am aware some people are also interested in how the record looks, uploading pictures is ok if you have a decent camera. Also, some may not have the equiptment to upload soundfiles. I had a record recently that I didnt have a clue how to grade, both visually or play wise - so sent it to the guy who wanted so he could make up his own mind if it was worth buying or not. We came to an arrangement that was satisfactory for both of us - if i had graded it i don't think he would have even responded.

But then again there has to be a level of trust - and sometimes the trust could be abused

why not make a rule that all records offered for sale have a link to a sound file i have seen quite a few records i would have liked to hear and perhaps buy but the old answer comes back i dont have the technology thats B***** and laziness if a bloke of my age can sort it out then any one can with a little help.

Yes, but a record that plays NM but has surface marks is not NM, it is VG

Records need to be graded Visually and also for sound quality.

I just checked and you're 59!! I now feel inadequate as I can't do the soundfiles. I did ask ages ago for someone nearby to help me set up some vinyl to MP3 convertor or whatever but no kind souls out there and after 2 years it's still in the box!! I may now have a go cos you're right although in my case it's not laziness just fear of f**king the computer up.

However whilst your suggestion is helpful for hearing 45s you might not know, most collectors buy 45s using visual grading so it doesn't help that much just to hear that the record plays fine. Play grading at say Ex doesn't mean the record is Ex. More OK to dj with or whatever blurb sellers use to offload a beat copy.

never thought you was lazy and my choice of words will probably come back to haunt me but with the advent of USB decks nothing could be simpler and the use of "total record" and "Jet audio" opens up fantastic possiblities for in car entertainment on those long boring 4.00am journeys.
