Ray Hines **why Don't You Give Me A Try Sorted
There's one on Discogs @ £500.... I know it's shot up in recent years, I paid £5 from King Bee 15 years back and did a fair trade with Nev a few years ago, but surely it's not a £500 tune now is it?

Tony Fox - Soul 7 Issued
Euan, I think you're right to say many didn't know it existed as a 45. I remember quite a lot of interest and raised eyebrows at my copy at the time and a lot of people said they thought it was LP only. It is a slightly shorter version on 45 than the Lp but i think it's got a bit more punch in the 45 mix, or at least that's what i remember.

Momie-O - You're Welcome, Stop On By (I-Dentify)
This isn't a hard record is it? £20 tune if not less, surely. Great record though.

Tony Fox - Soul 7 Issued
I traded mine for a Hamilton Movement over 10 years ago.

Personal Financial Ruin ?
Bloody hell Dekka, I read it like Pete and thought here's a thread that could be entertaining and one that hopefully won't descend into the pit of ovo, baggies etc. Why are you so angry?

** Marvellous Mid-Tempo** New Mr Fish Mix
Same here, quite a few that I know and absolutely love, but so many that are new to my ears. Absolutely brilliant as usual Steve. I've missed out a few times on the Chocolate sunday 45 and it pisses me off hearing it in this mix (in a nice way), the Collaboration 45 (S), Speck, Jimmy Bell, Jeff Adams and Steve Bassett are all new to me and are superb. Didn't we used to have an applause smiley?

Wanted Gaturs - Gator Bait
Yeah, I like that too, particularly the vocal moan in it, but Gator bait's the one for me, just cool as fuck.

Ian Levines Top 40
They look much better without the spinning effects Chris, in fact seeing the videos again sends a shiver down my spine with some of them, just to see those artistes doing those songs! It would have been a dream job for me to have filmed all those guys.

Ian Levines Top 40
Which part? As a cameraman and editor for the last 25+ years and having shot various pop videos for people like Ocean Colour Scene, Bitty McClean and UB40 and travelled in South Africa working on the feature film of their world tour in '94 (I think) for UB40 as well as programmes for TV including documentaries about Jamaican Soundsystems and British rap music. I think I have something valid to say about whether the quality of a music video is only determined by the budget or whether creative input can count towards the end product. So what do you know then Chris that makes my contributions so worthless?
-
Ian Levines Top 40
Yes I agree Steve, I only entered the thread because people straight away started talking about the poor quality of the videos and Pete said that should be expected as there was no budget and that was the point I was debating. I know it's all old news and these comments have all been made before and yes it's better to have some footage of these artistes than none at all. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it would be great to travel back in time and make sure that part of the budget for the whole film package (SWONS) would include a half decent film maker. Think I'll stay off this topic now.

Ian Levines Top 40
I did watch it all Pete, only once because I couldn't bear the effects and the assault on my senses. I appreciate that there was no budget, unfortunately there was also no-one there who knew how to make films using no budget or resources and I just think it's a shame that these artistes were not given a classier treatment on film/video. Good ideas, use of light, good framing, different shot sizes ie. close ups, wide shots etc, knowing how to cut visuals creatively, all these things don't cost anything but you need someone who can do it.

Ian Levines Top 40
He could have done it in the back of a cab. Point is that even if he'd stayed in the apartment a much classier end result could have been achieved without resorting to the effects buttons.

Ian Levines Top 40
The special effects in the videos are the visual equivalent to the drum machines and parping synths. No need for them at all. I don't care what the run down apartment was like, with a bit of taste and style and some minimum lighting and a decent editor you could make a much classier video. I suspect Ian decided to control the look of the video himself and fell into the wedding videographers trap of over use of the 'starburst' filter and the Top of the pops buttons and nobody daring to quell his enthusiasm for this by saying that they were utterly naff and cheesy. It's a shame that Ian didn't take the artistes out around the neighbourhood with a decent cameraman.

Curtis Blandon - In The Long Run
Did this ever get a vinyl press? I've not seen an issue but it looks like it could be vinyl in that picture. Lovely record that I still play quite a bit at home.

John Harris And The Soul Sayers Now Out On 45
I wonder if there are any copies of the Soul Explusion 45 on Tarantel tucked away in this radio archive. Not a too dissimilar story in that I think they were a US army outfit based in Germany or Austria who recorded a killer double sided 45 on a label fronted by a nightclub called the Tarantel that various acts used to perform at. I think it's the only soul 45 recorded on the label. Tramp records reissued the 45 on a lookalike(ish) Tarantel label and also their own Tramp label. The Original Austrian Tarantel 45 is very rare.

The Valentines - Breakaway
If the re-issue goes for £100 what would a nice mint white demo original go for now? I sold one for £100 a few years back and always kind of wished i'd kept it, as it's such a cool but intense tune that I always loved even though it never seemed to reach the dizzy heights of some of the more popular oldies.

Uncommon Early 70's Uk Motown Compilation Album ?
My favourite Motown comp. I still give it a listen, it just transports me back to a carefree time practising my dance moves out on the landing and wearing away the carpet. My mum could never figure out how the carpet was wearing there but nowhere else in the house. .

I think Nev's is a real bona fide 1st edition Bearsy.
