Yep, I used to have the multicoloured label as shown earlier (one of my favourite label art designs actually) and I got it from John Anderson's front page focus on one of his lists in the 70's, so deffo orig. I would have thought. Jordi

There Are Not Many Black People On The Scene?
Plenty of artists tearing their souls out, you only have to listen to Sam Dees' pain on his 'Show must go on' lp or the countless other deep soul tunes, Vietnam tunes etc. But I agree most of this heart rending stuff is based around love/relationship lyrics and that is an area that we all have in common regardless of colour. Deep political lyrics were and still are regarded as potentially boat rocking, and the system doesn't want to be rocked. Also a lot of artists probably didn't/don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. It's always been ok for white rock bands to write controversial lyrics condemming the system, but not so much for black groups unless you are untouchable like Marvin, Curtis or Stevie. The only area in black music where 'concious' lyrics have made big bucks for record companies has been through rap music, yet someone like Gil Scot-Heron who would have inspired many rap artists has never received the kind of promotion and support that would ensure his lyrics were heard by the masses. Luckily bands like Public Enemy did reach the masses with their lyrics and how they must hate seeing the plastic, bling and grind shit lyrics that are now peddled as rap music for a generation of gullible people to aspire to. But the record companies are making millions off this shit, so it won't change. Good lyrics by people like Michael Franti don't stand a chance of getting through, you can express sorrow at the situation you are living in but you can't put over biting critical sociological/political reasons why you are in that situation. Two Artists, Same Back Track
Reggae artists do it all the time. I've got lp's with one rhythm track on one side and another popular rhythm track on the other, with about 8 different songs on each side by different artists using the same 2 rhythm tracks. Jordi

Gloria Barnes Ill Call You Back Later
Hi Jason, I first heard this on the LP which I had over 20 years ago, but the track never registered with me then as "You Don't Mean It" was the tune at the time. Fast forward to about a couple of years back and I saw the 45 on Ebay with a soundclip. It blew me away and I bid on it but lost out, I think to Wrighty. I managed to get a copy not too long after but I don't think I've seen any others for sale in all this time, and I would say it's probably harder than the LP. I heard it and loved it and thought it would work on the soul scene, so I play it out and it always gets people asking me what it is. Is it soul or funk or R&B, who gives a toss, it's hard, fast, dirty and exciting. Jordi

Japan
I think it's well known Simon that Japanese collectors have been into the soul stuff for a long time, particularly the deep and the 70's obscure sweet/group and modern. I may be wrong, but were'nt they hoovering up all the 70's stuff out of US warehouses at the same time John Anderson etc were grabbing all the 60's stuff. At the time, the Japanese were going for anything soulfull, whereas our guys were going for the northern stuff. There's probably tons and tons of obscure 70's soul of all types stashed away in Japan that has yet to be discovered, that will be slowly but surely trickled onto playlists by Butch and others for years to come while most people still search for Detroit rareities in the States. Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
Again, to the Aussie lads, I didn't mean to be rude about your scene. I obviously don't know anything about it as I've never been out there, and I feel guilty of being the kind of pillock who spouts off about something he knows f@ck all about. I wasn't having a pop at Roy Burton either as the enthusiasm he shows (at some length ) in Manifesto is only to be admired. Not a hint of jadedness or cynicism in his articles, (unlike my posts and a lot of other people's), just love for the scene and Australia in general. It's just an observation I've had a couple or few times reading Roy's DJ's playlists in Manifesto to myself. I'm also not saying that the records on the playlists aren't good, they are killers. On a personal note, I'd love to hear what Sam Goldie plays and see some of the kind of playlists that include 70's stuff and funkier things, but that's just my personal taste. If I could afford to come over to Australia I would love to, unfortunately I'm struggling to keep my kids in trainers, school uniforms, turkey twizzlers and sunny delight and buy tunes at the same time.
