  1. More so in the UK Steve But we sold a hell of a lot in mainland Europe which was really pleasing as this was our first foray into the contempary gospel field. Anyway getting back on topic although kinda merging two topics Butch's inclusion of Mike's "I Want Some Satisfaction" in his excellent 70's and crossover set thread just high light's the quality of Mike's recordings. "I Want Some Satisfaction" was a Ernest Kelley composition, which Ernest recorded firstly on Willie Collins followed by serveral other artists in the hope of turning it into a standard i.e Cloe Martin Dee Edwards and a instrumental version by Johnny Griffiths on Triple B. Johhny Griffiths being a former member of the Funk Brothers at Motown with Jack Ashford. Then later a business partner of Ernest Kelley who worked surreptitously with Jack at Triple B due to Ernest still being employed by Motown and Gordy's dislike of any of his employees moonlighting etc , any way that's enough of that i'm sure Ady Croasdell will shead more light on this subject on one of his forthcoming projects Dave
  2. The album was never released with a cover, this was a very commom cost cutting practice at the time. Dave
  3. "You Make Me Feel The Way You Do" was also recorded by Barrett Strong and was featured on his 1982 Album entitled "Love Is You" which appeared on Norton Stern's Coup label. A 45 of " You Make Me Feel The Way You Do b/w Love Is You" was also released on Coup. Stern was a buddy of Ernest Kelley Mike Jemison's producer, manager and life long friend.Hence Mike also recording "You Make Me Feel The Way You Do" I always thought that "Spread Love was a very underated track which probably suffered because of only being available as a album track. I latter included it on the Ernest Kelley Soul Heroes (GVCD 3035) which was released on Grapevine in 2007. Mike Jemison now a ordained Baptiste minister is still a regular performer on the gospel circuit, often sharing the bill with Areatha Franklin. We also released two contempary gospel sides by Mike in 2010 "Hold On He's Coming b/w Call On Me" Soul Junction SJ507. Dave
  4. Hi Bob I too have a issue copy which I found lying around in a pile of records at Soul Bowl circa 15 years ago, but i have never seen another copy since. I did play the b-side out a few times covered up but can't remember what as (another senior moment). I think I mentioned that a issue copy exsisted in a previous thread regarding rarer Buddah releases Dave
  5. Hi Andy As you rightly say this release has caused quite a stir amongst real soul fans. Contempary gospel soul records are becoming a very popular phenomenon presently. Many thanks for the label scans too
  6. While talking with John (Anderson) tonight, we briefly discussed the above subject. He reckon's that he only ever had circa 50 copies and not all at the same time, although he did sell some used one's for a quid each in the early days (I'm sure Dickie Watt will confirm this fact being one of the lucky recipient's at the time). Althought John had quantity of many of Jack's other release's on Prodigal Triple B, Sepia, Spectrum,Ashford, She etc he has never meet Jack or Eddie (albeit briefly at Prestatyn). His dealings were with Lorriane. Even though John's dislike of Northern is well documented he has always rated Al Gardner's Sweet Baby very highly and thinks the backing track is great. Dave

  9. Press Release: Sounds Of Imani “Must Be An Angel/It’s Alright” SJ519 Release Date: Monday February 4th 2013 The Sounds Of Imani (with Imani being the Swahili word for faith) was created in 1996 by the versatile husband and wife team of Gerald and Carol Ervin. Carol a keyboard player, vocalist and songwriter in her own right, her background has always been within the gospel genre. She was a choir directress with several Church ensembles before forming in 1995 the Gospel/Jazz group, The Sounds Of J.U.T.O.C.A, with two of her co-workers from the Detroit East Community Mental Health Service: Thomas Lawrence and Julia Shabazz; they were later joined by Selena Rowe. While Gerry a cousin to James Mitchell of the Detroit Emeralds and Paul Mitchell of The Floaters began his career in the field of secular music. Gerald honed his vocal skills singing backing vocals with The Detroit Emeralds, Chapter 8 (pre Anita Baker) and The Floaters. He also featured in the group line up of The Flaming Emeralds with cousin Kenny Goodman, Al Martin, Glynis Martin, Rory Johnson and Chris Knight on their perennial 1977 Northern/Modern Soul classic “Have Some Everybody” (Fee 361). Gerry also featured in the group line up of The Detroit Emeralds when they last toured the UK. The legacy of The Flaming Emeralds continues today with Gerry’s cousin Kenny Goodman who is also currently acting as the musical director for Sounds Of Imani. The Sounds Of Imani are regular performers throughout the Detroit metropolis helping to raise funds for many Community organisations and ministering to various shelter residents such as the Salvation Army and the Detroit Rescue Mission to name a few. They have also appeared at several gospel events throughout California, Milwaukee and Illinois. They recorded their debut cd album entitled “Revelation” in 2002, but it is two of their brand new songs from the “New Project” that we at Soul Junction have licensed for our next 45 release. The contemporary mid tempo gospel outing “Must Be An Angel” backed with the more upbeat dance track “It’s Alright” for your delight. https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/sounds-of-imani-soul-junction For further information please contact John Anderson or Dave Welding Tel: +44 (0)121 602 8115 E-mail sales@souljunctionrecords.co.uk Soul Junction Records 20 Hammersley Close Cradley Halesowen West Midlands ENGLAND B63 2LG Tel: +44 (0) 121 602 8115 E-mail sales@souljunctionrecords.co.uk www.souljunctionrecords.co.uk

  17. Press Release: A.J. Sparks & Crew “Working On Love” Soul Junction 520 Release Date: Monday January 7th 2013 https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/aj-sparks-and-crew-both A.J. Sparks (real name Anthony Jones) is one of Detroit’s most respected session musicians who started his career as a drummer and percussionist at the age of 12. A.J’s early career was nurtured under the watchful eye of legendary Funk Brother Joe Hunter whom the young A.J always referred to as “papa Joe”. By the time A.J was eighteen he was backing some of the biggest names on the Detroit music scene. While playing drums for Edwin Starr during a performance at the Apollo Theatre in New York one night, the in house musical director made the lasting quote “that boy can sure beat the sparks off those drums” and so the stage name of “A.J. Sparks” was born. A.J was employed by many local Detroit recording studios including Sonny Marshall’s Dotty’s label and Ernest Burt’s Magic label, featuring on all The Mad Dog & The Pups releases amongst others. A.J’s drum rolls can also be found on The Chapter 8, The Flaming Emeralds, The Detroit Emeralds and the Floaters Fee label releases. A.J also recorded the Funk anthem “Put It In The Pocket” for Fee Records as “A.J. Sparks & The Spark Plugs” with the plugs being Donald “Crazy Legs” Austin and Howard Carter. A.J. also featured as a session musician on his childhood friend Michael Henderson’s” Do It All” album as well as the later “Slingshot” album which Michael recorded with Venna Keith. Further A.J. Sparks credits include working with Parliament and Funkadelic main man George Clinton on his “Cinderella Theory” and “The Awesome Power Of A Fully Operational Mother-ship” projects. More recently A.J has been involved as a co-producer on Ronnie McNair’s first solo project the current “Living My Life” album release. A.J is currently operating his own Detroit Black Smoke Productions Company, and it is with one of his own Black Smoke productions that we at Soul Junction Records kick off the New Year in style with. The incredibly soulful and classy “Working On Love”. The backing vocals on “Working On Love” are provided by a young and up and coming all female group known as 777 Jackpot who were accompanied and supervised by former Golden World and Revilot records recording artist, Ms Pat Lewis. While the b-side, see’s A.J and Crew return to their familiar funk orientated roots with “Gotta Make It Do What It Do” with the Crew member supplying the vocal accompaniments being none other than Mr P-Funk himself George Clinton. 21. I still have nightmares about this garbage: The Newbeats "Don't Turn Me Loose"
  22. Hi Barry Referring to your original question as to what tracks are mastered from original master tapes or 45's. To expect label owners or employee's to go through their entire catalogue to give details to which is which is a bit like asking "How longs a piece of string". New material isn't a problem but regarding older material this is where most of the problems can possible arise. In a perfect world every record company or artist (independent vanity releases) would have kept and maintained their master tape properly but sadly this is not the case. So original records or acetates have to be used more or in some cases if their is damage to the master tape and the necessary restoration work cannot rectify the problem a record may have to be used in conjunction with the tape to achieve the required standard of sound reproduction. Barry's original question only ever really arises with previously issued material, this reminds me of a little story from a few years ago. when a former big noise radio DJ was praising the re mastering quality of one of our earlier Soul Junction releases, while making derogatory remarks against one of the at the time Kent CD releases. As I also owned a copy of the Kent CD I asked the DJ to tell me the name of the person responsible for the mastering on the CD cover (to which the answer i already knew) which he did. To which I replied that has we use the same company as Kent for our mastering did he not realise that it was the same person who was responsible for the mastering on both projects! both of which sounded great. After a couple of uncomfortable seconds of silence I told the said DJ that he needed to get his ears syringed, get a life and stop trying to be too clever. Dave P.S The said DJ and I no longer speak, I wonder why?
  23. A clever DJ could always invite the audience to sing along during the missing bit Go on Ted I know your dying to give the "place bid" button a hit
  24. Artie Satisfield also did a version.
