Simon Dunmore Blues & Soul 1990
Oh how I love reading the endless debates on here about northern vs. modern, what is modern?, it's all disco, etc. Whilst browsing through some old Blues & Soul magazines last weekend, I came across this interesting article by Simon Dunmore in 1990. He's making a distinction between modern and real soul. Anyone remember that term? I thought the music I liked in the 80s was called real soul. He's also slating the modern soul scene for being stuck in a 70s time warp and not embracing new releases. The article brought a lot of response. One fella from Blackpool wrote a particularly vitriolic letter in reply and the debate went on for ages. Sound familiar?

Richard Searling Top 50 1980s
You can't beat a bit of 80s disco lol!!!! I had the Glenn Jones LP nearby as I was reading this and gave "You're The Only One I Love" a play for the first time in ages. Great record.

"i,i,i.i,i,i,i, Really Love You..."
I think it's by The Embers. Jo Wallace would know - she put it on a tape for me 20 years ago.

This Is It
Agreed. I'd love to see some Stevie Wonder deluxe CD's come out. It took long enough to make each LP so there's bound to be alternate takes, stuff that didn't make it, etc.

Marvin Gaye - I'm Gonna Give You Respect
The Willie Hutch version is pretty good too.

Human Jungle
Aaarrghh! Awful record. There must've been some interest though for Pye Disco Demand to issue it?
-
Otis Redding
I think Otis is the greatest soul singer of all time. He epitomises soul music. He wasn't the most technically gifted but the sheer guts, power and emotion you can't beat him.

Northern Soul Megamixes
Actually, I thought the 6Ts Housparty mix on Inferno over 20 years ago was really well done. As Bobby Patterson said, "Let's so something different................"

80s Soul ? ........ Good Or Bad?
Loads of great soul in the 80s. It was the decade that brought us Anita Baker, for God's sake! Ok, so there better known stuff had it's awful moments but there's lots of excellent stuff there too, and you don't have to look that far. Maybe, I'm a bit biased because I was a young lad in the 80s and strikes a chord with me but people shouldn't label it as being a crap decade because of one particular type of sound.

Break A Dismal Record
Strangely enough, I was liked The Sharonettes, particularly the manic laughing during the introduction. The winner (loser?) has got to be something that most people know and completely misrepresents the music - Footsee. Cornell Gunter and Jerry Butler are just great soul records.
-
Lisa Stansfield
Some of her stuff is quite good (Change) but 8-3-1 is rubbish imo lol. I really can't understand the popularity of this song particularly as there was so much other excellent stuff released around that time. 2001 will be noted as a golden year in the future!

No Angels
I always thought it was an old record until I read this thread - definite Julie Driscoll type sound as the article said. A bit weird really - doesn't really fit in with the other songs on No Angels.

Donny Vs. Marvin
Sorry Colin but you're right - can't beat Marvin's version although Donny does a very good turn, as you'd expect.
