Agreed. Too many positives come out of this site and far outweigh the negatives (although I appreciate how frustrating thry must be.) Keep it up Mike & team
  3. Oh how I love reading the endless debates on here about northern vs. modern, what is modern?, it's all disco, etc. Whilst browsing through some old Blues & Soul magazines last weekend, I came across this interesting article by Simon Dunmore in 1990. He's making a distinction between modern and real soul. Anyone remember that term? I thought the music I liked in the 80s was called real soul. He's also slating the modern soul scene for being stuck in a 70s time warp and not embracing new releases. The article brought a lot of response. One fella from Blackpool wrote a particularly vitriolic letter in reply and the debate went on for ages. Sound familiar?
  4. You can't beat a bit of 80s disco lol!!!! I had the Glenn Jones LP nearby as I was reading this and gave "You're The Only One I Love" a play for the first time in ages. Great record.
  5. Just browsing through some old Blues & Soul mags last weekend and came across this, which some people may find interesting. Searling_1990_B_S_.doc
  6. The Channel was officially released last year with The Crusaders sample. https://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProduct...&sku=433139

  8. Girth, I've always thought that Deliver Me is the best of his too. Dave
  9. I think it's by The Embers. Jo Wallace would know - she put it on a tape for me 20 years ago.

    Smokey Robinson
  11. Agreed. I'd love to see some Stevie Wonder deluxe CD's come out. It took long enough to make each LP so there's bound to be alternate takes, stuff that didn't make it, etc.
  12. The Willie Hutch version is pretty good too.
  13. Aaarrghh! Awful record. There must've been some interest though for Pye Disco Demand to issue it?

I think Otis is the greatest soul singer of all time. He epitomises soul music. He wasn't the most technically gifted but the sheer guts, power and emotion you can't beat him.
  15. Soon to be honoured on Radio 2 too: https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/gambleh...ndex_live.shtml

Actually, I thought the 6Ts Housparty mix on Inferno over 20 years ago was really well done. As Bobby Patterson said, "Let's so something different................"
  17. Great thread. Some from me: Meli'sa Morgan - Heart Breaking Decision Perri - I'm The One Chapter 8 - Stronger Love Body - Middle Of The Night Mini Curry - 100% (I don't mind a bit of Michael J. Powell ) Mille Scott- Every Little Bit William Bell - Headline News Willie Clayton - Your Sweeness Steven Dante - Love Follows I could go on & on & on........ No synthesized crap there

Al Broomfield, Eugene Wilde and Dee Dee Wilde. Plus many other talented family members.
  19. Loads of great soul in the 80s. It was the decade that brought us Anita Baker, for God's sake! Ok, so there better known stuff had it's awful moments but there's lots of excellent stuff there too, and you don't have to look that far. Maybe, I'm a bit biased because I was a young lad in the 80s and strikes a chord with me but people shouldn't label it as being a crap decade because of one particular type of sound.
  20. What's the channel No. Kev?
  21. Strangely enough, I was liked The Sharonettes, particularly the manic laughing during the introduction. The winner (loser?) has got to be something that most people know and completely misrepresents the music - Footsee. Cornell Gunter and Jerry Butler are just great soul records.

Some of her stuff is quite good (Change) but 8-3-1 is rubbish imo lol. I really can't understand the popularity of this song particularly as there was so much other excellent stuff released around that time. 2001 will be noted as a golden year in the future!

I always thought it was an old record until I read this thread - definite Julie Driscoll type sound as the article said. A bit weird really - doesn't really fit in with the other songs on No Angels.
  24. Sorry Colin but you're right - can't beat Marvin's version although Donny does a very good turn, as you'd expect.
