Good call. I think any version of this song is good -esp. Denise LaSalle.

Nice one Pete. The tyrone Thomas is quality - I remember you put me onto that last year. Terry, the "One Night Affair" tune is by Veda Love.
  3. Some nice CD's from the States: Brown's Bag Debra Brock Monique Debose

It appears to be more difficult to define southern soul lately imo. Sure you get stuff come out on Ecko and labels like that, which seem to be typical southern soul to my ears. A bloke a work considers Anthony Hamilton and Leela James to be southern soul - maybe? He's younger than me and I can see the distiction between them and other major label artists but it's not the southern soul I think of. I quite like it in small doses but think you have to sift through a lot of average stuff to get to the gems.

Excellent clips. Really enjoyed that. What's the song in the first two clips?

Blimey, the serach goes on, eh? Lol. Someone like Girthdevon or Derek jack should be able to help you out.
  7. It's not even necessarily chart fodder. Although some charted (O'Jays, Three Degrees, harold Melvin, the dreaded McFadden & Whitehead for example), most of it didn't. Not in the UK anyway. Jean Carne, The Futures, Jones Girls and lots of stuff by well known artists never touched the charts.
  8. There's always plenty of Philly played in modern rooms. The choice is endless. Not many played in northern rooms I suppose because they're not rare and doesn't fit directly with that type of sound, although there have been a few exceptions. It's the 70s equivalent of Motown I guess. The difference is that there isn't loads of quality unreleased stuff in the can because it all got destroyed once they considered the material wasn't quite good enough at the time.
  9. That's the way to do it Janine!! Not sure if that was just a Medway or a mod thing......

  11. Yes Dave but did you clap chopping hands style or just in the usual way?
  12. As several people have said, it's good to play something different early doors. As a punter, I enjoy getting there early, supping a pint and listening to something different. If it was prime time fodder, I'd stay in the pub until prime time. I'd love to do an early doors modern spot.

It's on Northern soul Floorshakers. Excellent value for money CD with stonkin' RCA stuff.
  17. I saw Will Downing walking through the Pentagaon shopping centre, Chatham about 17 years ago. I went up and said hello. Will was friendly enough but he was being chaperoned by a local Radio Kent DJ who was rushing him off somewhere. I wouldn't mind but I was the only bugger that recognised him!
  18. Travis Womack "Scratchy"!!!. Was he having a laff! That's worse than Sheena Easton and Bill Oddie!! Lol!!
  19. I think they're always good with this years being particularly strong. It's good to have Prominent, Fantastic Johnny C, Ledisi remix & Keiysha Cole on it as I never picked those up. I thought Jean Wells was going to be on it too?

Personally I think the released version is much better. It's better produced and sounds more meaty.

It comes from a great CD too. I know it's received critical acclaim by the media but it really is a solid soul CD. Certainly one of the best of 2005 even if you can but it cheap in WH Smith lol.
