Value Of : Sylvia Syms - Each Day (Uk Brunswick Demo)
HI ALL....I think Pete is right with the 1960 for the DECCA COMPANY 1 sided DEMO 45, back in the early 7ts when the collecting scene was just starting & the records collected on UK Labels was masonic and by word of mouth only, the whole subject of why they made DEMOS was a science, To be honest, I really can't remember seeing any UK DEMOS before 1970, I am aware that for those people who worked in the music industry such as EMI Hayes. Radio & TV stations & a few DJs had. but not me, Maybe this is why I like the SOUL SOUNDS LABEL so much, even today those 30 records that were put out on the label makes me shudder, in 2013 I have them all plus some DEMOS, & like many collectors I had to find the original issues and then the DEMOS, never had a FAT FISH original US copy, but have the FANTASEY DEMO. Getting back to the 1 sided DEMOS it is worth noting that in the 5os BRUNSWICK UK issued not many black artists, they came out on RCA or LONDON, however I have some DEMOS from 1960 that have BRUNSWICK LABEL on one side & LONDON AMERICAN on the other, The main facts on 1 sided DEMOS are as Pete stated you need both side to have a real collectable, so in our scene having a demo copy of "shop around" is OK, but it's value is only 1/3 of having 2 sides?. as I found out years ago when I had a handful of 1 sided LONDON DEMOS shops like MOONDOGS did not want them, Why! common sense tells me they are rare, but on the Rock & Roll scene, the collectors would not buy them they wanted original issues, this is the complete opposite to the UK 6ts soul collector, my last point is some I sided records have TRI centres some are solid small hole, not sure why or if it makes a difference in price? To conclude apart from the SOUL SCENE, 1 sided records are not worth much, only the export DEMOS are collectable to people outside the rare soul scene. but as I say I think they must be worth more than what a dealer will give you? Price Please - Little Richard - Discuss It - Columbia Demo
HI ALL... I AGREE! with the £100 - £125 price, however, "the get down get with it" reminds me of GREEBOS in ICE BLUE JEANS, yet it has sold for more, what the f**k up with people, it's an £8 record always was the booby prize, have people gone nutz? I am proud to say I never rode a BSA BANTOM 125 or look like KEZs big brother on the way t pub after a shift down pit, and yapping on about DARBY COUNTY or NOTTS FOREST, you know what I mean? MODS don't work in coal pits, why you ask, coz there ain't no coal pits in the smoke! so if someone with greezy mits wants it charge £250 in new notes and tell them not to stand next to you if you don't want to get pushed about by the SKINS DAVE K

Gas 171 Pat Kelly
HI ALL....PETE if only this record had got picked up by the SMOOTH CROWD rather than the stuff TROJAN were pushing onto the gangs with all them strings & twee lyrics, maybe the music would have not gone to political, and almost push many white kids away, which it did, I for one become uncomfortable in the clubs I had gone to since I was 16, thank god I met MICK SMITH DAVE K

The Night?
HI ALL....I LIKE IT I LIKE IT, WELL DONE PETE. All the 4 Seasons stuff & many of the SURF music especially the Beach Boys became hits because of the SOUL CLUBS of the day the TWISTED WHEEL CLUB,& the SOHO CLUBS including the Pink Flamingo & the TILES CLUB played this sort of music mixed in with R&B SOUL & UK group R&B STYLE, I remember my brother coming home from the TILES after seeing JIMI HENDRIX, also he loved 8 96.8 KEITH, which was a huge MOD RECORD. What was that 4 Seasons garage type instrumental that got played at BLETSOE, it was on a red label??? DAVE K

The Night?
HI ALL In 1976 I was a member of the lighting crew working on the Kool & the Gang, F.B.I UK tour, It was on that tour I learnt many interesting facts about the band, and who they knew, like Ed Kiser and they loved the music that I had on tape including "burning sensation" it was on a gig to the free trade hall Manchester that the stage roadie, a guy called Donald ?, he was the voice on the open sesames!. about th e MOTOWN AUDITION DISCS, 12" PLATTER WITH 4 to 6 instrumental trax, that were given to group & solo artist to preform at auditions, he told me that MOTOWN kept a file with every instrumental of every song, I have no reason to doubt his word or his knowledge, this would mean that the "NIGHT" EXISISTS SOMEWHERE DAVE K

Records No One Will Ever Hear
Hi All.....With the greatest of respect Pete I heard the record and although it was ok ish, are you telling me that it's a better version of the Drifter as done by Don "50ts throwback" Charles? much rarer I agree, but as I off records go don't let it cloud your judgement, As to the great record, I parted with my acetate of Long John Baldrey version back in June, which was a bit of a wrench still apart from Ray pollards & Don "I was a teen idol in the 50s & now I can't get a hit with this top song that Ray recorded at Abbey Rd" DEMOS. Gas 171 Pat Kelly
HI ALL.....Before I got the bug for collecting RARE SOUL, I collected JA music, on leaving school in 67 the in music was Soul Motown Stax Atlantic & Bluebeat. However it was the latter that hooked me in, the whole JA scene was cool and it was not long before I went to the knock at the door clubs with my mates, it was at a time when the JA music scene was changing from the Ska Rock steady beat into Reggae. Back then the records you liked and the ones you bought depended on 2 things where you heard them & who stocked them, in my area it was the PAMA label that were stocked, and in others it would be B&C Island group of labels, As labels go I loved all aspects of the PAMA label, and by 1970 had many of the labels records. one of the more well known PAMA labels was GAS, and it sold one of the biggest reggae records of all time with PAT KELLY - "HOW LONG" "TRY TO REMEMBER", it also sold another of PAT KELLY songs "L0VE" - "WITH ALL YOUR HEART". this hardly sold and was well out of the knowledge of the youth sub culture that had made "how long" so huge. the point of this posting is I noticed that Pete Smith had a copy for sale on his Planet record shop for £40 vg noc. and I write this to urge someone to buy it, as it hardly ever comes up for sale and the term rare means rare in this case, Why? well it is the last record to be released on the GAS label, in fact it was pressed up & that's it, never got a distribution to any PAMA outlet, So if you want a investment for the new year, I recommend you get it before it goes? Eggae Lps V Soul Lps
mmmMMM! Sorry about this posting, I remember starting it. then going for a Geoff Hurst & forgot to finish my point, did not realise that I actually posted it? However the gist is there, the question was about playing reggae LPs that I have, in preference against the soul LPs, I have assumed it was because of the fact that many were purchased when they cost only 14/6 and they were great value, where as many of the soul LPs I got from second hand shops in the 7ts, and also by then I was wrapped up in the Northern Soul world that meant original rare 45s, LPs were not part of the scene, infact back then only 5 LPs come to mind for the only way to get the northern track? Danny Wagner & Bobby Hutton come to mind, Now I have said it is an age thing for me, however is this normal for all regardless, hope this makes better séance??? DAVE K

More Norfolk Soul - East Anglian Stylee This Time
Hi All....Loads of good memories of RAF/USAF bases from 68 to 75, went to the Ponderosa Club a few times and the NCOs club on Chicksands, used to knock around with the yanks, the bases were 100% USA, every thing was proper even the COCA COLA was from the States not made under licence, the BARS on the base would take UK money and give you change in $$$, in fact I had some great times, The thing I remember the most if you wanted a cigarette you got a whole pack tossed over to you, unlike the british who count how many they have given to you??? and the live soul acts that never toured the UK but did come over to play the BASE CLUBS, and July 4th parties. Eggae Lps V Soul Lps
HI ALL...When it comes down to it I'm quite happy to put a reggae LP on the turntable than a soul LP. Is this the same for you or is it a age thing, As a collector of both Reggae & Soul I have no problems putting on a reggae LP, I think this is down to the fact of the price of LPs in the 68-72. a full price LP was equivalant

Backfield In Motion
HI ALL.....BLUES & SOUL #28, Feb 27th March 12th 1970 ON DISC singles - reviewed by John Abbey. Mel & Tim....Backfield in motion. Conncord 004 ....Long awaited issue of the recent million seller from the states, by Gene Chandlers protégés Mel Hardin & Tim McPherson, it's typical Chicago with loud brass backing & a Impressions type vocal from the duo. Tune & song are very simple yet effective. It all seems too easy but it's definitely got something, the more I hear it - the more I like it! Flip is easier going item with a good punchy feel to it. **** Sorry my scanner won't work? DAVE K

Backfield In Motion
HI ALL As far as UK 1st release it's the PINK, some people say it's not, they are wrong, It's a strange record to be such a treasured hit, because the subject matter of the song is US Grid iron Football, from a personal view point, I knew hardly anything about the sport when I got my copy, it was not until channel 4 introduced it I saw the light? Now does the same go for SHOTGUN?? DAVE K

Len Jewell On Pazazz
HI ALL...He had an obsessive thing about the CASINO, he did a fanzine OWLS EFFORT, As I stopped going to Wigan in MAY 78 many of the younger Wolves Soulsters were unknown to myself, (yet it is the younger ones, who have been avid supporters to this day). Not sure if Ady C, Mick Smith & Pete Wid stayed to the bitter end, I suppose they did with all the keen young blood to sell to, Wolves good guy Pete Smith would no about RD better than me, I have not seen Richard about for at least 8 years, and as I no longer get RECORD COLLECTOR where he used to advertise his latest list, I can't tell you if he is still selling records?? Hi All....Yes he always wore it, Richard was a strange person to deal with, he would pay top prices for records, which was good news for dealers, however this would mean he sold stuff way over priced from his list, of thousand's, He sold the Brooks brothers for a few pounds, talk about mugging yourself? DAVE K

HI ALL.... I remember selling Richard Domar a Dalton Boys VIP F copy at the OLD VIC in Wolves in 86 he hit the roof when he found out it was not real, shouting he demanded a refund, and got the reply F Off, I did not here him complaining when he bought it thinking he had mugged me, thems were the days. Okeh Letter Colours
HI ALL ..Pete I have had both gold & silver issues on 7168 DELILAH, I have always assumed that the silver press was later, but it could be because the label was on the cusp & some plants were using up old stock? however the label changed both colours not to long after. DAVE K
