HE WAS A GRAMMAR School kid the same age as me, but KEN who come from WEST HAM in East London collected BLUES Records and he also played a guitar, when i used to go to his place I was introduced to the BLUES Led Belly, Doctor Ross, Lux Meed Lewis, Mississippi John Hurt, Sonny Boy Williams, Little Walter, Howlin Wolf. Robert Johnson, the LP King of the Delta Blues Players is and has been an inspiration to many (why collect UK) and along with Elmore James every body had to learn the Blues as i tried with the guitar but could never get right, I Lent the Harp it was quick and easy and portable, Ken also had a collection of Blues recordings by white artist copying the blues like Cyril Davidson , John Mayel, and all the artists that were on the Blue Horizon Label these artist you could go and see at places like the Round House in Chalk Farm, The Middle Earth, I went to the Earth based on Portable Road opposite the Dog shop saw Fairport convention and Quintessence there and even closer to home the Blues-ville 67/68 clubs had taken over from the Ricky-Tic clubs Rory Gallagher Taste, Duster Bennit, Christine Perfect? Fleetwood Mac the New Yardbird, Manor House best was john Mayel and his mouth Harps in Gun Holsters Phew they were the days. It was Ken who introduced me to the Home of the Blues mag and the Paul Oliver book and LP the Story of the Blues, and my 1st look at an original US Chess recording, Very Rare Ken explained as handled all his records with care and wiped every time with EMITEX.The first imports I have mentioned before some where that meant something to me were from Jamaica and over the next 4 years i started my collection of about 1000 records initially I got the record that were om Tighten Vol-2 some of the Red Red Wine LP bad 4 from the Bang Bang Lulu Pama LP. While Mary Hopkins was winning opportunity Knocks taking the mantle from Freddie (Parrot Face) Davies Those were the Days my Friend, I thought they would never end, now Reggae came in 2 forms UK release AND JAMAICAN RELEASES, These where in several different variations called PRE RELEASE and Versions of a popular record or production of rhythm my first find was when i listoned a record by ANDY CAP who produced a version of the old FAT MAN standard that had been a hit for Derrik Morgan in 62 as REGGAE developed many JA fave had to be re recorded from SKA to the new format and FAT MAN appeared on both TROJAN AND PAMA outlets , but it was the RHYTHM track that every one love and Andy Cap turned us on to VERSION With DJ' mimicking the tune Dubbing Vocals on top, although PO-PA TOP period on treasure Isle at the time (I NOW KNOW DIFFERENT) you had to get the imported version.This leads me to the conclusion :- Soul collect ores understand that i/we collect as such we buy which means especially in the 6ts & 7ts without hearing the record at all, as such digging for new tunes in junk shops was not only fun it was profitable, if you are new to the soul scene that means you first attended after 1973, you have it so easy, if you all you need to do is type northern soul onto a computer or go to John Manships Excellent Soul Shop on the net you can buy all the records you want in and at your own pace, but you can only imagine what finding a UK SOUL CITY or ACTION is like, then what about Carl Douglas UA, or Bok Bach once you start you will be at it for years, and finally you should applaud those UK collectors who made the 1st trips to the US as there knowledge enabled the rare Soul Scene move into Northern Soul which opened the gates for modern crossover and so on, for me I will stick to collecting all soul but as Niel Rushton said or was it KEV Roberts there is nothing more satisfying as owning a a few dozen UK demosDREAM ON, if you don't get it now you need a kick, and yes i do have the Kent 6ts 100 club collection however since no 17 I did not get any more, as it was like asking Mick to give me 50 pounds for nothing every year as they fetch good money, Dave

I would be greatful to find a copy thats got a feature about myself and selling records at Wigan Casino, thing is I cant remember the Date, what I do remember not only did he name me but he printed my full address (a Good way to get busted at the time?) i am pretty sure it was in 77 just around the time the Kempston Rovers FC nights started with Franco running the show with Hammy Brillo Me & Mick now & again, can any one remember this little club night held on a Thursday?? any way I would love to have a copy with the article or even a print. Hi to you all...I have looked through this thread from top to bottom...My conclusion is WHAT Point are YOU TRYING To MAKE.. It seems that you are all attend All-Nighters and Weekender's just to moan about issues that don't mean F all, the Soul scene ain't Dieing its just that you are getting old and cant except this fact of life?? What the majority of this thread want, is unclear to myself. Also BUTCH is a good bloke a great DJ and I don't like to here BAD things said about good People. You are all good people but if you must go to weekender's every other week no wonder you are Burnt out? and sound like lost souls, Enjoy yourselves don't attack one another as there is only 10 to 15 years left for most of the originals.// DAVE KIL

Hi All - I like talking about BOXING However having a natter about BOXES Is as close as we will get to-day, my more recent purchases were from John & Talk when they had the SHOP, I miss that place best thing to do on a Saturday morning since TIS-WAS, Q:-WHO SAID..I COULD CRUSH A GRAPE??.. I still have my converted Bottle Beer Crete that is the perfic size for 250 45s that I used to take to the CASINO and the one that is featured on the Granada ENGLAND this ENGLAND RED BOX.....But my rarest Box was given to me by Mick Smith it belonged to BIG CLIVE EVERETT and it was the box they took to the TORCH & the MECCA, and is lined with the MINIT LP 33 1/3 Sleeve..So theirs history with my BOXES are they worth anything I wonder?? By the way TOADY BOY Cheers for the support last Friday I made it there and it will happen next March and they booked 4 weeks to here me? Hi All - In my umbel opinion! it was 1973 to it's peek in the spring of 76, and the long hot summer days HOT! HOT! HOT!. Also by then Ken Cox had established his East Anglia's Club that was a big change also the fact the MECCA lost it's sparkle and with SOULFUL SAMANTHA'S with the great JOHN VINCENT doing his thing with EMI disc's , I remember him raving over the Zenith band inst on Beacon? and again you had MARY and her 2 PIERS to go to along with early members of th 6t's rare soul collectors doing Yate a early version of the 100 Club?. and after being busted in the sumer of 75 and being banged up in Leicester nic for 5 months listening to Diddy David Hamilton playing T.D Valentine on the radio (the lengths of time I suffered so many of you had a good time is a cross I have to carry) and busted again in JULY 77 on the way to Huntington this time for intent to supply it would seem that the first 4 years were the best 74 & 76 on par with each over especially for all the different sounds played from UK Pop Flops to New York Disco..HAPPY DAYS DAVE KIL 2 loves have eye!

In 1970 I acquired my first SOUL imports, Stevie Wonder "nothings to good for my baby" on TAMLA, Tammie Terrel's "this old heart of mine" Earl van Dyke "the Flick" VIP and so on most available exports were mainly R&B OR UPTEMPO BLUES? MOST SOUL RECORDS WERE ON THE Action label and Tamla Motown Atlantic & STAX this continued into the hunt for more elusive and exclusive finds. at this time I met MICK SMITH who has always been a mentor and Sage and its through Mick I learnt about RARE SOUL I Have never tried to compete with the Micks and ANDY'S on the scene preferring to collect my way and get stoned but if it was not for UK reggae and soul there would not be any scene at all. and Pete is right with his 3 rules. T0 conclude over the YEARS I must of collected 25000 records but its my UK collection that means the world "Ready Willing & Able" green & White Demo can be played at any time in my book, try and find a copy buy it play it enjoy it and then wind your neck back in and you will be respected DAVE I TOLD YOU!
