Realistic Values For Canadian 45's?
Hi Kev, I'd rate these particular records as the same as US as far as price goes. At least that's what I would expect to pay/sell them for. I'm trying to think of a Canadian copy of a US issued 45 that prices drastically different and Im stumped. (Or at least one that I'd pay a lot of difference for). You managed a copy of my remaining Reo/Ric Tic 45 yet Matey?

Ian Clark-top Man Or What
When we started There's That Beat! Ian sent me a lovely letter of encouragement with some artist picks and a check for subs. Old school and a gent to boot. Some of the 'DJ' threads on here would have him laughing that's for sure.

Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
Yep, Think you're right, I didn't understand your point of view. It's not unusual for me when 'listening" to DJs though. Many of the discussions about "The Scene" and their part in it I find strange at times to say the least. I'd rather concentrate on the collecting/dancing side of things within the scene. I have no desire to be a DJ. I think my views are shaped because of that. I struggle with a lot of the 'DJ' related threads on here now. For many of us I would venture that the old school etiquette associated with enjoying rare records-collecting-DJing-sourcing-enjoying new discoveries by folks who've dug them out and applauding people who drop the odd forgotten oldie on the Technics is self explanatory by now and still at the heart of what is called in UK "The Scene". Take away the vinyl hounds and I would suggest that the venues would soon lose a lot of appeal for a lot of people. For instance, what we gonna talk about between the disco records and the Rock n Roll some DJ's foist on their customers at times. Mags going great guns thanks Matey. Might even be able to afford real meat again in a few years. The US fanbase collects the mag. It's great to post them out to subscribers in Kansas, Texas, New Jersey, California, Maine etc etc. Now if only I could persuade them to get off their arses and get on a plane at the same time together we may actually have a scene of our own here!

Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
Sorry, pushed wrong button there, post upladed before I answered Ian's question of Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense? My answer would be: 'Of course it does." Absolutely 100%. It always will for the majority of collectors I reckon. It's what fuels the music, the two go hand in hand. During the late eighties when the scene shrunk down it was even MORE so. the bottom line is that it's the collectors who are always at the heart of the scene. When this shrinkage happens again in a few years, it'll be the same faces still collecting, still travelling, still on the hunt for the next 45, still at the heart of it all whatever shape the scene takes.

Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
Hi Ian, The connection between the two are tenous at best though. People with a 'vested' interest in the the 'music biz' and who are peripheral to the 'scene' are the ones who actually have the myopic vison in my opinion, and not the scene itself. It's an underground music scene. Sure it's developed along the way but primarily it's survived standing seperate from the 'music biz'. It's survived C90s, Laser discs, bootlegs, Cds MP3s, iPods, laptop Djs, and will continue to survive whatever is thrown at it. A catalogue of CD releases that are a drop in the ocean for the Big Five hardly contsitute a relationship between 'The Scene' and 'The Biz'. Your overview is based on an appreciation of only one criteria - the music business, it's technological development and it's need to reinvent itself every now and then to continue to hoodwink it's customers into buying into what the idustry presents for it's own ends. The main point (or ethos, the word that many people band about), of the scene in the first place was/is to find our own route and AVOID the mainstream 'music biz" surely. "Change for change sake is not always a good thing." "If it ain't broke - don't fix it" Let things develop at their own natural pace. Etc Etc. Just because a handful of wannabes start shouting from the rooftops that they are the 'saviours of the rare soul scene' and if they don't get their way it's all gonna fall apart, stagnate and die don't actually make it so.

Jimmy Delphs - Dancing A Hole In The World
It's one of the toughest on the label. I've been looking for 15 years. I've been offered a few, mainly demos but I've also seen a couple of nice stock Issues. (Ted Massey has one on here). The last two demos I was offered ended up in the "Land Of The Rising Record Price". Turns out that there is a developing Detroit collectors scene in Japan. Damn yer eyes Mr Flynn! Joan's right though, the Esquires version is equally as good. Damn sight cheaper too. And it comes on a nice W/Demo! Nice.

Northern And Funk
Unfortunately Russ, I have to agree. A complete mish mash of musical syles that will only ever gain a local following. That, and the fact that everyone's a DJ and unless they're DJing they never appear at any other gigs will always ensure the US is predominantly a local scene. Two rare soul weekenders certainly don't constitute a scene. Ah well. The commute to UK for a regular soulfix continues.... See you on Oxford Road in January Matey.

Northern And Funk
I would have thought that the best judges of what funk records are 'accepted' on a traditional NS dancefloor would be the people dancing (or not, as the case may be). Don't need no 'advice' as to what is acceptable in sets, I either like it or don't like it. The likes of Bobby Franklin, Skullsnaps, French Fries, Crocker et al were mahooosive at the time and rightly so....they're bleeding great records. I think J-Brew got the point right. Record after record of street ghetto in yer face funk would bomb I have no doubt, but the insertion of a classy record with a funkier vibe than the 4x 4 beat has always been popular. I think the adage "quality will always out" probably sums it up. So...in answer to the original question posed by Billy it has to be a yes, there is a place for funk records at a 'northern' do.

Cover Up
Thought Tommy's 'old school" etiquette deserved a bump. Cover Ups - Love 'em or loathe 'em, they're all part of the craic. Guy used to spend more time informing people of the title than the bleedin' song lasted for! Tommy....Don't bite Mate. Stick to what you do. Let the world do it's own thing.

Just Another Fool
Hi Phil, Best of everything for the future. Had a few laughs along the way eh? Tell you what though.......remember.....The Lord said: "It's better to give than to receive" and "It would be easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle than a rich man to pass through the gates of heaven". Therefore ....any chance of you posting the Deltours and a few others to our house Matey? take care....
