I agree with Mark, it's definitely a £40-£50 disc and regularly sells for that. I'll take 20 copies at £10 please. Or even 20 at £20/£25. Not a particularly easy to find 45 in my experience.

The Polydor and Capitol releases were by a country rock group with strong connections to Fleetwood Mac (Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks sang with them for a short while and Fleetwood Mac recorded the Curtis Brothers song "Blue Letter"). The Bell group must, to my ears, be a completely different bunch of people.

Thanks Kev. Haven't heard the Ken Boothe version. I know quite a bit about Gates, but this Planetary Records connection was completely new to me.

I just realised that all eight 45s on the Planetary label are produced by David Gates (later of Bread fame etc.). There are four 45s on that label by him (one under his own name and three under pseudonyms). All sides on the Dorothy Berry 45s are also written by him (and supposedly the ones on his own 45s as well). Does anyone of you know what the deal is? Did he own the label? Was he the A&R guy?

Glad you enjoyed the mix. Yes I've got that 45 as well, seems to be tricky to locate copies of and I payed about $80 for mine a couple of months ago on eBay. Then a couple of weeks later another copy came up and sold for slightly less. Great tune!

  10. This past thursday, one of the national swedish TV channels aired a documentary about latin soul and salsa in New York City. Parts of it were quite damn good in my opinion, and especially the first 20 or so minutes which consisted of recent Joe Bataan interviews/footage/performances shot in New York (singing "Subway Joe", "Ordinary Guy" etc.). The entire programme can be seen on the following link: https://www.svt.se/svt/road/Classic/shared/...sp?&d=83146 If you want to stream the file in VLC player (or similar), use this link: mms://qstream-wm.qbrick.com/00928/auto30/080221papas.wmv Some of the talk is in swedish, but the interviews are in english. I'd recommend those of you who are into this kind of stuff to check it out, epecially the parts that covers Joe Bataan/Johnny Pacheco/Fania and run from: 03:50-10:40 12:40-16:15 (awesome!) 18:45-22:10 (perhaps even better!)

  13. Soul or not - nice wall of 45s though... And isn't that a Koko label 45 at the top of one of those piles!

Superb! Will be nice to know the definitive answer to this one.

Dave Pinch and Boba, I completely agree with you.
  16. Isn't that the version on White Cliffs? The name of the artist escapes me at the moment, but it's on some fairly obscure New Orleans label.
  17. I don't have a copy of the Atteru 45 at the moment, but I have seen 3 different label variations of it. The one posted above (which looks kind of "Atlantic"), and then I've seen a styrene pressing (which looked very "west coast") and then one white demo copy which looks very much like a Vee Jay / Constellation / etc. 45 (if that makes sense) which also has got the words "Distributed by Joda Records, NY" written on it. Check it out: (I'll see if I can come up with a scan of the styrene 45 as well)

As far as I know the gold label reissue was pressed from the same stampers, but not necessarily at the same pressing plant.
  20. Have to say that I prefer the look of the multi-coloured (and in my experience very rare) Atlas issue!
  21. Sebastian posted a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
I doubt that. I would like to see another 45 from 1978 which has got that kind of computerized type-setting on the label, a beveled edge and transparent vinyl (when held in front of bright lighting). It looks MUCH more like the Glenda McLeod second issue on HGEI (from 1984/1985 or so). Unless I see 100% proof I will consider the gold label issue to be an 80s or 90s pressing. In any case it's a second issue. If legally done (which it obviously is) or not makes no difference, it's still not the original release.
  22. Sebastian posted a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
The label looks exactly like the one on the "gold label with dark brown/black lettering" (but much paler!) which was pressed from the same stampers as the original 60s release, hence having superb sound quality and often being refered to as a legit 2nd issue. It might very well BE legit, but it's still a second issue and should be of marginal interest to anyone who collects first issue 45s in my opinion. The pale green one might be a bootleg made from the "gold label" reissue? Here's the gold label reissue, it would really surprise me if it is from the 70s:
  23. Sebastian posted a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
No, that is incorrect. It was never issued at the time of release, and not during the 70s, but it did turn up on an official US Tamla 7" in 1995 and was given away for free at some kind of Motown conference or promotion event. Allegedly most copies were left behind by the atendees and the fact that is was pressed in limited quantities (somewhere around 300-500 probably) means that it is sadly quite hard to find these days. It has got catalogue number 42286-0288-7 and came with a nice looking picture sleeve. It has later turned up on a "Chris Kings Anniversary" 45 (which I have heard is legitimate) and also as a bootleg which turned up a couple of years ago. Check out the scans below. ORIGINAL CHRIS KINGS ANNIVERSARY BOOTLEG
  24. No, he was from New Orleans and many of his 45s are on New Orleans/Louisiana labels. Atlas was a New York label. Check out the Danny White CD on Kent for the full story. I have a very strong feeling that the original label for "Keep My Woman Home" was ATTERU and not ATLAS, but the liner notes to that CD tells a different story so perhaps Jeff Hannusch or Tony Rounce knows something that I don't. The sound quality on the Atteru release is much clearer than either the Atlas, Sue UK or Unity issues.
