  1. Perhaps that's the point? Hucknall WILL make a lot of money from it, he also knows that he will not be able to improve on the originals, but wants some decent songs to sing and make some money from. He's a singing "artist" and needs material to sing. If he can sing these songs half-assedly and STILL make money and get some concert bookings at the same time, then good luck to him.

  4. Just came to think about this... Whilst driving from Malmoe to Gothenburg the other weekend for Soulastatic's 10th anniversary, we at one point had the 12" version of "You Got Me Hung Up" blasting from the car stereo. And all of a sudden that long instrumental break started to sound like Kraftwerk.
  5. The sound quality on the Saadia issue which I used to have was inferior compared to the Phil-L.A. Of Soul release. Are they all like that?
  6. A fantastic CD! I played it about 5 times in a row yesterday. Great gritty stuff.
  7. It's the exact same recording. The 12" has just got a longer instrumental break towards the end.

  11. Superb boogie flipside on the King Tutt as well which never seems to get a mention.
  12. GREAT series of LPs! I've got 4 seperate "Lost Soul" LPs though, no double LP...? Who's the "Mr. C" that has compiled them? The guy who still has got a radio show on WFMU?

I agree with Mark, it's definitely a £40-£50 disc and regularly sells for that. I'll take 20 copies at £10 please. Or even 20 at £20/£25. Not a particularly easy to find 45 in my experience.
  14. The Polydor and Capitol releases were by a country rock group with strong connections to Fleetwood Mac (Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks sang with them for a short while and Fleetwood Mac recorded the Curtis Brothers song "Blue Letter"). The Bell group must, to my ears, be a completely different bunch of people.
  15. Thanks Kev. Haven't heard the Ken Boothe version. I know quite a bit about Gates, but this Planetary Records connection was completely new to me.
  16. I just realised that all eight 45s on the Planetary label are produced by David Gates (later of Bread fame etc.). There are four 45s on that label by him (one under his own name and three under pseudonyms). All sides on the Dorothy Berry 45s are also written by him (and supposedly the ones on his own 45s as well). Does anyone of you know what the deal is? Did he own the label? Was he the A&R guy?
  17. Only about 3 hours left on these auctions now. Thanks for looking! :-)
  18. Glad you enjoyed the mix. Yes I've got that 45 as well, seems to be tricky to locate copies of and I payed about $80 for mine a couple of months ago on eBay. Then a couple of weeks later another copy came up and sold for slightly less. Great tune!

These shows are fantastic and WELL WORTH purchasing. You can get all six volumes below for 20 euros each (from the company which released them): https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...amp;p=BVD+20126 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...amp;p=BVD+20127 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...amp;p=BVD+20128 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...amp;p=BVD+20129 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...amp;p=BVD+20130 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...amp;p=BVD+20131

  21. This past thursday, one of the national swedish TV channels aired a documentary about latin soul and salsa in New York City. Parts of it were quite damn good in my opinion, and especially the first 20 or so minutes which consisted of recent Joe Bataan interviews/footage/performances shot in New York (singing "Subway Joe", "Ordinary Guy" etc.). The entire programme can be seen on the following link: https://www.svt.se/svt/road/Classic/shared/...sp?&d=83146 If you want to stream the file in VLC player (or similar), use this link: mms://qstream-wm.qbrick.com/00928/auto30/080221papas.wmv Some of the talk is in swedish, but the interviews are in english. I'd recommend those of you who are into this kind of stuff to check it out, epecially the parts that covers Joe Bataan/Johnny Pacheco/Fania and run from: 03:50-10:40 12:40-16:15 (awesome!) 18:45-22:10 (perhaps even better!)
