How much???
It was clear when it went up it all looked too new to be genuine. I'm surprised any there were any bids.

Sherrell bros current price
The key word I wrote here is "relatively" i.e. in comparison to records where there are only a handful of known copies. So if I have something rare with say 4 copies then something in the 200's is relatively common. My guess is that based on the fact that so many dealers had it around the same time with some doing a front page focus on it, there are probably more than that. No arguments its a nice record and yes most records were cheap and it may not be found in quantity again. My point is that the price has more to do with demand than rarity.

I suppose its really how you define rare. Is 200 copies rare or relatively common ? I'd say that in comparison to many rare records its quite common. I agree the so called rarities that crop up every few weeks on RCA, Scepter etc are not rare. I've made this point on here before and upset a few. The fact that most copies are in the hands of collectors does not mean its rare - just unavailable. Yes there is significant interest in such items, but again is it not confusing demand and rarity ? There is also another factor and that is the 'cheque book Charlie's' who must have every record immediately at whatever cost, irrespective of the history and background of the 45. On the flip side there are those who are prepared to take advantage of this situation. Call it naivety, or lack of knowledge - I'll leave that up to others to decide, but if I was buying a record and it was a front page focus for many dealers readily available at £5 some years ago, I'd really ask myself why I would pay £900 for it now.

Sherrell bros current price
This 45 was a 'front page focus' 45 for Black knight records at £5. I bought one and sold it several years ago for about £25. Not a rare record as many other dealers had copies also. Always regarded it as a cheapie. Its a nice enough record and in demand.... but £900 ?

Would you buy more records if international shipping was free?
Craig Moorer uses a different shipper. The last 45 I got from him a few months back was $8 post in a really thick mailer. Maybe more dealers should look at postage options, but its probably only worthwhile if you are doing thousands of transactions. For the casual US Ebay seller it may be too much of a hassle.

Not Had A Natter About Watches For A While
Guys If your into watches my daughter works for a jewellers and they have a large website.....https://www.jurawatches.co.uk/. Theres something on there for most budgets. You can have a butchers on the site and then if you live near one of their stores (mainly around the east midlands) you can ask them to get it in store so you can have a look and then do some negotiation. If you order straight off the site you pay the price on there. They also provide a feebie with your purchase and do HP to spread payments. Now...I'm just off to get my own xmas pressie and decide between a Maurice Lacroix or a Glycine. Decisions...decisions... Andy

Shipping from the US is costly and some sellers are milking it to get a better return if their record doesn't sell for a high price. The most costly issue at the moment is Pound Vs Dollar, which is making it really difficult to be cost effective when buying from the US. A couple of Ebay sellers asked my why their items weren't selling and I explained this but it fell on deaf ears - they still want $30 for a record they were selling at $8 two years ago. With the X-rate and postage its almost US=UK prices. Free postage would help BTW - just to answer your question.

Is it me, but
You are correct in many ways. I commented in a similar vein on a recent thread. There was a record offered a few weeks ago which has been a 50 quid record for the last couple of years and a 20 quid record years before that, in fact it was on sale on SS at around £50 six months ago. Imagine my surprise when I looked and it was 200 !! Some prices quoted on here are even above what major dealers are asking and they have to pay staff, VAT etc and still make a profit. I'd like to think it was down to lack of market knowledge, but the more I see of these sales posts the more I'm getting convinced that some individuals are just taking a chance that there are gullible collectors who will splash the cash. Over recent months I've made a mental note of who these sellers are and no longer bother reading their sales posts.

Jimmy Mack – A Woman Is Hard To Understand
Just before I return back to 'Pedants Corner' there is no Boot according to the long previous thread(s) on this site. The second issue was done primarily to capture its popularity in the UK and was done via Kev Roberts (I think) and the artist and label owners and was legit. Again from memory there wasn't that much time elapsed between the fist and second issues, around 2 years or so (from memory). The original is as you state no "so" in the title and is quite rare. If the site had a better search engine you could find the thread but google is probably better. Back to pedantsville now

70's Pressings wanted - help required
Guys Just to provide some background on this request as its not for me. An old mate from years ago contacted me out of the blue by letter, so I paid him a visit. He's not had the best of lives with problems along the way...and to cap it all a serious accident two years ago. The silver cloud is that this accident has left him house bound and therefore he has pulled his life together and wants to get back into the soul scene and collecting after 30 years away. He has some 70's pressings left and now wants to start building a collection but he is living on a small budget at his parents house. I gave him about 25 records from some old pressings I had and some cheap originals to get him going again. He asked me to help source some of the stuff he used to have, so if you have any pressings please let me know what you have with prices....but please don't try to kill me on price !! Thanks in advance Andy

Robert Thomas - Salvation
I had to double check this but there are two different versions of G 100 pale green label. One of them is 1.59 running time where the break in the middle has been shortened. Does anyone know why this should be ? It seems a bit strange to have two identical 45's with two different mixes. We all know that Major Bill had some strange goings on at Charay regarding releases and numbering etc but WTF ? Is this why the Lilac label G 103 was pushed out so quickly and is this the short or long version ?
-
Robert Thomas - Salvation
John RT came out on Charay C-87 (yellow) , G 100 (pale green) and G103 (pale purple). I played C-87 and G100 on Youtube just now and they are exactly the same. The break starts at around 1.12 or so with the "bell" type sound and again at 1.33 or so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H2ivMpynic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGQNolKm5Cg Major Bill who owned Charay reissued 45's to meet demand and the numbering system was a mess. As you see the same song was also recorded by a number of different artists on Charay. Andy

Misuse of the "Rare Soul" title
Not sure where your going with this RCA thing as it seems important to you, but FYI I own very few RCA records, certainly none that are Roy Hamilton. Simple point being made. Some records described as "rare soul" and usually fetch money are NOT rare. There is confusion between rarity and demand. Many of these are found on major labels with large output - but not always. Some ebay sellers use the "rare soul" tag to try to increase value. Hopefully this clarifies it.
-
Misuse of the "Rare Soul" title
I think your missing the point a little. RCA was just an example, but you pick the exception. I could easily have said Mercury but of course we could pick out Stormy Wynters . Same for other major labels like WB, Decca etc. I didn't actually specify any particular tune but was thinking of say...Roy Hamilton.

Misuse of the "Rare Soul" title
Agreed the tune in question above is dreadful and should never have the label 'rare soul', but lets broaden it a bit. Why is the current trend, particularly on Ebay, for sellers to say 'Rare soul'. Personally I think much of it is down to the 'price guides' that have been on the market for several years. Sellers, particularly in the US who have no real background knowledge of the soul scene, have seen that soul music can and often does realise big bucks for them, so if something is even remotely close to having that 'soul sound' it appears as 'rare soul' hoping that the Wonga follows thereafter. For most its a lack of knowledge but others its a hopeful punt that somebody latches on to it. Recently I went through a few hundred records on Ebay from a certain seller described as rare soul, only to find most were Doris Day on acid or Perry Como in his rocking chair. So having spent 2 hours of my life I wouldn't get back I sent the guy an email message with a full and frank appraisal on his taste in music. He's not responded BTW. But lets be clear also. Much of what is described as rare soul in the UK, is not rare at all. In fact many records have been available over the years in plentiful quantities, but are still described as rare. Yes of course there are those 45's which have never surfaced in great quantities but probably 70% have. I'm still amazed when one of say the RCA 45's come up and be described as rare, when clearly its not. Confusing rarity with demand is a different thing altogether. Finally while I'm still in full rant mode, I'm absolutely amazed at some of the prices requested by sellers on this site. I see records that have been 20 quid for the last three decades where someone is asking 100 or more. Just this week I saw a 45 to buy and its been a 20 record for years and 50 record for the last couple of years and by no means is rare. So what price ? Just shy of 200...WTF !!!! This is not uncommon with prices often above the major dealers who have staff, taxes, overheads to pay as well as make a profit. I'm not getting into the oldies / newies debate, but yes there are many oldies out there which would be new to some on the scene and yes it seems everybody wants to be a DJ, that's why there are so many venues "you can DJ at my event if I can DJ at yours" it seems. There are of course different tastes on the soul scene and an over reliance on oldies. It must be soul destroying - no pun intended - for a DJ trying to play something different and new (ish) to see the floor clear. FFS I going to have to stop now......breathe Andy breathe....and relax

Lee Shot Williams PM Boot/original
Its never really been a sound that was really popular so not sure why it would be booted ? The original is green label roughly printed in black on low quality paper. Never seen anything except an issue copy. Unless you specifically want the PM label the UA release is the same track.
-
Lee Shot Williams PM Boot/original
Came out on Tchula and MT. Both very similar modern versions with the MT having slightly more sax in the backing. These versions are different to the PM and UA releases - which are the same. I have all four PM, UA, Tchula and MT.........and yes I'm sad and should get out more
-
Lee Shot Williams PM Boot/original
Are you talking about 'It aint me no more' on PM ? I haven't seen a boot, but if you're unsure buy the UA release as its the same cut Andy
