Anybody remember this radio show. John Green (jtg900@hotmail.com) used to dj on a Saturday night about 6 to 7. Great stuff in about 1975, when you were just getting into this scene. Send him a mail if you remember it. Lots of other top acts followed including Richard Searling. Nothing happening there now but it did play a big part back then. Ed

Following on to this thread, has anyone published a book listing the classics like this along with the discoverer and/or DJ who played it first? Where it was played and what month/year etc. Is anyone that knowledgeable. Ed

I met Bernard Manning (One of the acts) a few weeks ago and he was as sharp as ever. Non of the audiance dare stand up or go to the lavvy or he would have ya. Great guys who gave some top one liners. Ed

No kidding, a mates dad bought an original copy of 'whoose little girl are you' at the time of first release. 10 years on or so, can you imagine when this lad was sifting through his dads Elvis and the like, and spotted it!!! As big a Northern Sound as many others at that time. A great voice, and a great dance record. Ed

To be fair, Soulgirl is only quoting from another site. The 3 classes defo cover all bases though and will touch a few nerves. When a Japanese punter offered £150 for my cracked 'UJIMA' it had to go. Sorry but 150xprofit could not resist. Ive got it on CD now (Oops I should not have admitted to that) Down the Class 'snakes and ladders' I go. Ed

I suppose I have been lucky to have been around long enough to see record prices collapse as well as escalate. In 1978 many of the real oldies were not bringing any money and at one soul noght I picked up a handfull of original at about 50p each from a Torch Waller as he told me they were good. He told the truth and I ended up with a mint copy of Mel Torme (Not that its my cup of tea today) Coming home baby, Ko Ko Taylor - Fire, Fontella Bass - Recovery and a few more that I eventually sold for about a 1000% profit when they were back in demand. What goes around comes around, so save your dosh and pick off the bargains sooner or later. Ed

This topic has been done before and the reason it ended early was that someone pointed out that with values of rare tunes today its not wise to advertise the fact in case you get a visit from a certain type of collector. You know the ones who want the record but dont want to pay for it. I suppose if some lucky sod had copies of the 20 most valuable tunes at todays prices they could be worth £100k or more, so not a bad nights work if you can remove them and sell em on. Ed

You know, the tunes regarded as 'classics' or 'top drawer stuff' but they just dont push your boat out. Starting off with Diane Jenkins 'I need you'. I am OK with 'Tow away zone' and 'Sweet Wine' but the 'I need you' track does nothing for me and if it comes on a CD (Mecca story etc) I have to flick it on. Whats your 'should like but dont like' tune. Ed

Was Dean a hit in the 60s or just a local singer etching a living like most of our heroes. Strange thing, it can sometimes spoil the song when you see the artist years after the release. Lots of that on the 'Strange World of Northern Soul' DVD. Herbert Hunter for example. On the other hand seeing Brenton Wood do the 'Gimme little sign' jig in LA made the song better. Ed
