  1. Not sure if this is totally true, but I once heard that Billy Arnell spent all his money making this. And it did not sell well.... But it was / is a highly collectable disc on our scene. It got pressed up and for sure I got me a copy back in the day.... I'm assuming the folks who pressed it up made a few bob, and the djs who played it out were rewarded in one way or another. But what about Billy? He may not have needed a return, but it seems to me that plenty of others got a return. TSWONS Ed
  2. So Rain - out of my mind was credited to Soul Sam at the St Ives venue? Maybe somebody should chronicle when where and by whom! Just remember it being a floor filler at the Cleethorpes Winter Gardens all nighters. Once folks like John Anderson were importing a box or two of a certain tune, skimming off half a dozen to 'associated dj's' it's hard to credit that record to anywhere but Kings Lynn! Ed
  3. And the girly tunes were huge.. Ed
  4. Never heard this out since cleggy all nighters.. Ed
  5. Thee record of my youth club days. Just get on the floor and try your best to copy the folks who could dance.. Ed
  6. Not heard this in 40 years played out. It even got pressed up I recall. Ed
  7. I remember Tears being massive and the reissue selling well. BUT it featured on a John Peel late night special and got slated! How would anybody know the significance of such a record unless they were in the moment on the dancefloor? KTF.. Ed
  8. Even some quality soul obscurities got played Ed
  9. Here is another... Just had to be fast.. Ed
  10. More like 79 or 80 It got slagged off at the time of being played by the majority of soul fans, and represents just about the lowest point in the desperation to find new uptempo Northern. Ed
  11. Everything in moderation. Good djs can mix it all up and get away with fringe records. I've been to nights when it's a run of 6 or more obscurities and the atmosphere gets killed! Ed
  12. First time we've had a Scottish Terrier. He either loves you or loathes you, and takes weeks to switch from the latter to the former with new people and other dogs. A real character though! Ed
  13. Panorama Coniston Water. Ed
  14. Baxter in Coniston Ed
  15. Ready Steady Go....first appearance in the UK of Otis? Room under Regent Hotel first appearance of the boys from Liverpool? Who knows. However...the Disc youth club on the welfare site opposite Lord Conyers hotel and pub, did broadcast Jerry Williams and Jimmy Radcliffe to beehive jumper, yellow Fred Perry t shot, and stay Press keks, with seg impregnated brogues wearing youngsters in 1973.... And Jim Ruffin did play live in Den arby whilst I was revising my IMEMME final exams..... Missed the show, but passed the exam.. Ed
  16. The attic in Donny is now flats.... It was also Baileys and via Terry Sampson had loads of soul nights / artists and even a failed nighter. Rudies Scarborough came after Four Seasons. A big thread on here previously about 10 years ago! Otis redding played in Donny...as well as t'beatles.. A small special mention for Adeles in Den arby.. Jimmy Ruffin and others came to the village. Ed
  17. Lots of great tributes to this uniquely talented artist on you tube. Such a shame these guys never got the financial rewards they should have. RIP and thanks for the memories. Ed
  18. We run a bus from Doncaster to the Notts Palais probably early 80s on a Saturday night. Truth be told it was a bit too poppy for us. Never went back again. Just put it down to a bad night, as you say, it run for a fair length of time. Ed
  19. Just can't tell on some tunes, and I always thought this was a female lead. Ed
  20. Sad news. RIP. This is top top drawer. Ed
  21. Terrible news. So sad. RIP. Ed
  22. Well at least she knew it got released..unlike TWPYB at the time of recording:). Lovely lady. Glad she knows how famous she is now in TSWONS! Ed
  23. Knowing what to look for to determine if a specific record is original, may take a long long time to learn..... Luckily this sites members hold that knowledge and love to share it! As a rule of thumb, if you buy Johnny Manships rare records price guide, and say a record is listed at £1000, it's unlikely you will pick up a copy for less than 75% and it will be genuine. Unlikely but not impossible! Happy hunting. Ed
  24. Not a dry eye in the house. Ed
  25. If she is down to 6 stone and has cancer again and having hospice care at home.. As is widely reported, then for sure it's a terrible situation. One of her relatives had reported she was awake and aware. Aside from all her songs, I loved her performance in the blues brothers as the nagging long suffering wife: Ed
