  1. it has few moments where they get it right, like the sense of trying to desparatly fit into the scene at the start. but the film reeks of low budget and cheap popcorn fun which is OK, but not when your up against so many for who the scene meant so much.
  2. Sometimes out of sentinentality people over egg a musicians signifigance, in this case Carl's contribution can never be overstated, a true giant of the 6ts soul scene.
  3. Think John's been playing that about 2 years or so, a Bidds oldie by now, LOL.
  4. Mar mayte the Legendary Johnny Beggs asked me to pass these on following some requests. Third Generation- its time- CU Edie Holman- She's wanted- Alt take Marvin Gaye- Right on- Select sound Malibus- High on my baby's love-unissued Tina Turner- Out of you mind- Unissued- Sonjay The farmers - Touch me- HLF outtake Tony Sherman and the Black Cats- Save me- Wachi Wara Productions issac Hayes- Changes- Unissued- Enterprise Willie Bobo- I will always love you- Unissued Richie Mayo- Live the life CU Richard Coombs- I mean you- unissued Jose Piliche- Bananajuana- Fania outtake Tony Lawrence- I'm over you- Bell sound Unissued Sadly due to general Knackerdness after 'CHANGE' I mised his set, I do know the quality and originality the man possess and expresses through his tunes though, recently heard him refered to as 'the mad Scientest of northern soul', exploploring the outer reaches of the groove, certainly!
  5. in fairness, there's a bit of both really, cool kids in generally in city centres looking for an alternative to the mainsteam, and they tend to have a wider range in taste and and generally a greater interest in the music. Then we have the baggy trs and vest brigade, who seem more attracted to 'the scene' dancing, patches oldies ect. Many say, 'there just starting out, dont know any better' and believe they'll progress, limited evidence of this to be honest. I'd say the former would shun the term Northern soul and the later would embrace it.
  6. the commercial assosiations with Northern have definatly put me off using the term over the last year. In my head nowadays, All I think about is baggy trs, hoop skirts, patches and mugs, oh and presings, when I hear the term northern. I'm not young anymore but thats my take on it.
  7. sorry mate , it wasnt meant ot be personal, but I still cant say how anyone can say he's overated, I dont like Queen or U2, but I'd never say they were overated, they deserve respect as talented musicians and songwritters. I mean the guys never really had a chart hit, and in the grand sceme of things he has a small cult following. Just how is he overated, by whom?
  8. fair do's a was a tad on the grump last night but, pappa bear, really Kev, I know loads love it but it just leaves me cold, some X- over is great but this is pipe and slippers soul of the higest order, coco and leccy blanket soul even.
  9. its a fair point pete, I've just found so many on this scene that are into collecting rather than into music, and it irks me when a guy with so much talent and originality gets stick because his records dont fit the 'northern mold'. To be honest its the ones that dont fit the blueprint I usually like the most, apart from papa bear that is
  10. right here's my current most cringeworthy tune, papa bear and the cubs, its not that its a real dirge, the band are ok, and he can sing a bit but for Christ sake what's that gotta do with the northern scene? how to kill a dancefloor or what? it's the production, absolute pouse.cant belive this has been a big tune for so long, and what a waz name as well!
  11. incredibly narrow minded, imho, i have real problem in respecting the thoughts of people who only like northern/ 6ts/ 7ts/ modern, maybe thats not you but there's certainly a few of them on here.
  12. Steve Cato, Mace, Johnny Beggs, Adam Topping Gumbo George Mahood, I could go on but I dont want to list all the change DJ's weve had in the last 12 months, and I started change partly to hear Dj's that I thought needed to be heard out more often
  13. Great crossection of tunes played throughout the night by all concerned, Superb underplayed straight edged northern from the Wonderful Diva Di and Mister Jones certainly has his own niche sound now. First set of the night from me, played around 7.30 till 8ish, we alternated 1/2 hour sets throughout the night. Gene Anderson- Baby I dig you Ted Ford- you're gonna need me Denise Laselle- The right track Earl Gaines- Soul Children Stone Fox band- Down in a hole Bee houston- Hava a heart Coldblood- i'm a good woman Valerie Simpson- Sinnerman Jonah Jones- What you are Frank Butler- the love I need Bobby fisher and the Bishops- now your gonna cry Dynamites- dont leave me this way.
  14. the Mongo is brilliant mate.
  15. Been spinnin the gene anderson me sen, got played it at the last Bidds nighter too.
  16. 5 I've been hammering at wom in preparation for Change this sat, not bought a great deal for the last couple of months so some are things I've dug outta the shelves Valerie Simpson- Sinner Man Black Sugar- Too late Royal Jesters- That Girl Le Grand Melon- Baby pleasse dont go Baby Ray- house on soul hill.
  17. fair do's just checked it again, but its not coming through on this thread sadly, I' have to Add, Ron Hardy, Frankie and levan but all again intonated at least in the article.
  18. you could try contacting the Colema, store in Lima, peru. There very reliable and honest in my experience.
  19. This is a little narrow to say the least, most mentioned so far are all NS DJ's, how about some great straight soul DJ's, Bob Jones, perhaps, Norman Jay and Mr Scruff can all put great soul sets together, and are truely DJ's rather than just great collectors that know how to sequence a set in a passible order.
  20. certainly a fair portion of it is as you described, the new bingo, I dont know about matured, regressed more like, to its most comercial phase in the mid 70's perhaps. It doesnt mean that we have to accept it though, I'm sure there were plenty pissed with it then, like I and others are now. I think really the problems come when its intrusive, in a lobby or foyer area around the entrance to a weekender is reasonable but inside a room where people are tring to dance and enjoy an atmoshere its totally inappropriate for me.
  21. It certainly is on my part, the comercialisation of a once underground scene deserves to mocked. Its all a load of garbage, generally the people who buy it aint got a clue, go make money somewhere else.
  22. sorry chalky I was being naughty and got caught out! Your spot on about it though and If I thought the guests wanted to use one I'd bring one to saturdays Change night, I'm just a vinyl fetishist really, that would be my prime reason for cutting a slate of a CD only track really, I just like to dj from vinyl, cd's are fine at hme for me, but even then, 2nd best.
