  1. I have to agree, its not an issue for me, northern's not alone in being used as Muzak, you can here bits of any obscure prog, pych, funk used in ads all the time. Chris Evans is a ginger div, yeah, but thats no revalation to anyone. Aside from it making a point about the general quality of contemporary pop, Northern being played in the mainstream media can only be a postive thing. Celebrity papmiesters commenting on the scene, well thats another thread.
  2. Your so right Carol, the current scene in all its forms is so full of tragedy and comedy it would make for great entertainment . themes like lost youth and missed chances, ego's over-ruling quality in the music, and obviously the ever increasing commercialation of the scene are just the kind of subject matter that a Bleasdale or meadows could do wonders with.
  3. I seem to remember this was lp was produced by Mike pickering, of Mpeople and Hac fame, another one time celeb with northern affiliations.
  4. The constant negativity you commented on, some comments are negative grumblings others are genuine attempts to question the status quo and iniciate debate, surely thats the purpose of a forum isnt it? If everything was accepted blindly on here with little comment than positive praise that would certainly discourage traffic. Ive heard it said quite a lot, people are stopping using this site due to all the negativity, but it always seems that the most popular threads are also the most controversial. Mr waterman is on r6 this afternoon, doing an interview with radcliffe and Mconie about the programme if anyone would care to listen.
  5. oops, cause it is, mixing my gene chandlers there, LOL.
  6. I've avoided this thread, since my early contibutions but wanted a last bite of this cherry to say that, like so many other threads on here, Pete Waterman has seemed to become an instant metaphor for the increasingly polarised hemispres of 'the scene'. one of my early introductions to the scene was listening to guy hennigan on janice longs evening show, around 1987 I think, he made the scene seem so cool to me listening as an 18 year old. the lust for vinyl, the passion the truely underground nature of the subculture. A far cry methinks from how said popmyster may portray us, aside form the cheese factor, the real concern should be how the scene is presented in general. As living, breathing and still underground? or museum curio harking back to bygone days and echoing the teds in the 70's. For me this discussion has raised some really interesting questions, like is any publicity good publicity? I can understand and respect those who think that it is, but cant help thinking its a little niave to assume that all publicity wil have a positive effect. its always going to be a contentious subject , national publicity, the scene was build on avoiding it, or at least not really caring about it.
  7. great verson of 'I can take care of myself on that elpee.
  8. best new night different strokes best new dj Gumbo ya ya, matty hill or rich penrith. best new spin, that'd change every day but at the moment, I go for masterkeys- i done gone on the right road from adam T's CD I got last weekend, freaking awesome!!!!!
  9. cause its not Kev, its just no where near as hammered to death, for christsake you've been listening to these amazing records for twice as long as I have, surely their effect on a person disminishes every time you here them, its like Christmas records, slade and wizard are are great to the first couple of hundred times you hear them, nowadays I hit the dial as soon as they come on the radio. maybe I should of said top 100 in fairness, there's a fair portion of the 500 that doesnt get a look in, some you mentioned, but also a massive portion thats extemely overplayed. I'm not keen on burnside, but love listening to fresh sounds.
  10. I can dig loads of opinions on this thread, black rca's, red and white's, mar v lus ( one der ful is tasty too) but personally I've always been a sucker for labels with photo's of the act on them, ala, maskman and the agents, and the lovelites release to name but too. I started collecting a canadian house label on this basis, loads had black and white photos of the act on em, and had to get the lot! sad man that I am.
  11. started collecting it, in the 8ts, just because of it monty python style graphics, top pick
  12. i love rockers revenge, and used to acca it up bigtime when ever i played an olskool house set. never been a big fan of double cooking but I know it works in a big venue and most of been real powerful @ the casino. I actually dont mind this too much, and technica lbly it works for me but 'cookin's' already got a couple of vocals versions so have to admit it seems a little pointless. Now a club classic acca over 'thumb a ride', hmmmmh............
  13. someone told me butch has had a copy of the green one in his box @ 400 for the last 10 years.
  14. yes but if it helps to keep NS popular anything is excusable apparantly he's not waving!
  15. thats fine and I'm sure many will find the feature of interest, others will be concerned about his lack of crediblity, how this reflects the scene, and oh pete's general cnutballysness.
  16. cant see the clips so sorry if these are repeat Horace Williams- I'm going Xmas shopping Otis Redding Merry Xmas Baby
  17. been to the dam maybe a dozen times including new year, amazing, and queens day, not a gay pride event, a royal celebration when the whole town goes orange! cetainly one of the most exciting and cultured city's I've visited, hope to take in the soul club next year, Im well overdue a return visit. Also a great place to dig, I found soul great 33's on the rembrantsplein market.
  18. fair point, I sposse what I meant was, burnside is typical of so much in contemporary blues and its productions values. i just used Mr Cray as a well know example, the simarlarity ends there.
  19. Your right, just been freshing up my knowledge on the tube, Robert Cray blows Burnside into the down-home gutter. Personally I love blues, I'm not sure of its place on the scene or if I'd want to hear at a night, but I sposse I could tolerate the odd track, I know a lot of folk dont dig latin and boogaloo, which is always an essential feature if I get to play a set, so live and let live and variety is the key again. However what imho R cray and Burnside have in common imho is a contemporary polish and sheen which for all its clarity lacks the warmth and depth that 60's r and b tunes have by the bucket load.
  20. while were at it, not sure of the credits on it, but there must be a connection between 'Im gone' and Derek Martin's unreleased 'flashback'? they sound so similar, imho. Billy Shae Rae aint as good but it isnt that bad a version either.
  21. As I said I'm not keen but I'd go for this over another top 500 oldie any time.
  22. hope so I've been saving up for a Northern soul Golly.
  23. deffo, I'd also add that latina dnb funky sounds have there own particular nuances.
  24. just for this year, there's loads! Gloria Gaynor- You'll be sorry Lovemasters- Pushing and pulling Mark iv unlimited- gone.
  25. have to add its a pure blues record for me, that I'm not personally keen on myself, sounds a lot like an uptempo tune by someone like robert cray,
