Curtis Mayfield - Move on up (Curtom demo)
I heard Dave say, on his radio show, that it was an accidental play, the previous record had finished, he'd been distracted, had to just something, anything on. That happened to be M.O.U. it filled the floor and went on to be very popular.

Thanos chalky, stuff like this helps connect the dots for those of us who weren't there. So many sounds on there I associated with others.

Where did you first hear these tunes?
Didn't mean to move the thread away from when people first heard them, to when they were first actually played. It's interesting to read how sounds were tried out several times before taking off, some through rarity, others just not right for the time, or audience.

Where did you first hear these tunes?
Tommy Ridgeley would probably be through Butch's set's in the late 80's, 100 club, droylsden ect. Is it Stafford or Wigan? Anybody?

Where did you first hear these tunes?
Roberts John, i assume was a revived oldie but I first heard it late 90's. Sealing used to hammer it in his show on JFM. Also got a lot of action at the Ritz, nighters, Prestwich, and the togetherness nighters, when kings hall used to be great. Along with 'the brothers- are you ready for this' both were massive.

Levanna McClean teaches Northern Soul
Wish we had a few younger members on to give their two peneth, or bitcoins worth. But I'd guess for some of the few young guns who attend non young focussed nights, appreciate the formality and respect as an alternative to what they've seen in mainstream meat markets. The kind of mickey taking, dancing, arsing round, ale swilling followed by a fight/ snog/ kebab we all spurned when we were young. Something don't change, there's always been that crowd who don't have take going out that seriously. And there will always be an alternative, it might not be northern soul but imho it won't really be northern soul anyway without the respect for the heritage and culture of the scene.

The fondness that many have for bidds, that closed relatively recently. Can pay testament to you sentiments. The affection that many of is hold for the 100. Personally the more run down the venue the better for me.

Levanna McClean teaches Northern Soul
So what were the records that weren't northern, out of curiosity?
-
Levanna McClean teaches Northern Soul
Thing is the alternatives are so crap. Dance music in all its incarnations is plastic and corporate.
-
Classic example
Loved the last 100 club anniversary single but having played it a few times there's definitely a bit of a dodgy stereo effect with the recording, sounds like some 60's album tracks where you get an almost phased echo sound. Anyone else noticed? Apologies in advance adey, it's not a gripe, it's amazing work you do bringing this music to the world in any format!

Huddersfield, was happening at the time, thats where 'hardtimes' started. In terms it f soulful house, the daddy of all nights.

The Rave Scene/soul Scene
Geoff Oakes, a big Wigan guy face, according to Dave shaw's book, was very influential for us on biddulph. He went onto to start renaissance, in Mansfield and later all over the place. They alway asked where you were from at the hacienda, if you said Stoke, you were listening to f**king indie at the brick house. If you said biddulph, you flew in. Sunday's we'd see Sasha's blue Porsche, personal reg, RE1M1X, outside Geoff'ss house in town
