Tom Jones
Think you all must have cloth ears if you think Tom Jones is soulful... I agree with Brian...and I'm only Welsh by marriage Oh yes Motown wanted to sign him, songs were written for him that ended up being sung by the Four Tops....thank God for that is all I can say Northern Soul maybe.....soulful...NO I don't thinking that shouting soul records loudly means that you're a soul singer IMO

Has Anyone Seen Paul Weller Or Marc Almond At A Soul Event?
Eddie Piller's in that video isn't he? Looks like a scout hut, loads of mod types dancing? it was originally done by the Jam but the Style Council released it later-great record and you can definitely hear the Northern Soul influence.

Attention Motown Masterminds
Cheat I got 7...and I guessed a couple. On a better day I could have got ten Has anybody applied to be a contestant? I went through the form just to see what they asked and they ask you what your specialist subjects are (3 choices) but then they ask you what your sources are..ie they ask you to name books where information about your subjects may be found!! Now that is a cheat!!!

Young Movers Need Pride
Mmmm...a very"mature" post from someone so young...and Mr Manchester Cato doesn't know her from Adam....nor do I although maybe PaulB can account for Morrissey's mate as he used to hang around those parts and is around the same age. Unless the poster comes on here and identifies themself I would take this posting with a large dose of salt.

Overkill Again?

Overkill Again?
You should think yourself lucky that you have the choice to actually go anywhere....! Mmmm should I go to Barnsley? Radcliffe? Ritz Prestwich Allniter.....? I think I'll stay home actually...why go out when I can pack boxes for moving and change 2 babies' nappies It's an easy choice-if you like R&B and uptempo sixties - go to Barnsley If you like Ritz plays, oldies and modern (probably the best modern room around some would say) go to Prestwich (but get there early)... And if you want to hear across the board and some classic Detroit Northern Soul (Mr Bicknell is on) and a separate R&B mod/ska room go to Radcliffe. In fact Radcliffe and Prestwich are so close to each other (only a couple of miles apart) you could stay up here and do both...if you've got the stamina And I'm sure I don't need to tell you what to expect from the 100 club? You see I am an expert on where to go even though I rarely go anywhere Have a good one anyway you moaning old bugger

Friday Night Or Saturday Night All-nighters?
Ha ha...they are really soul nights now aren't they now we have later licensing hours. Personally I would be better off if niters started at 12 and I didn't actually go out til then as when they start early I just start drinking early and it can be a bit messy In the good old days....(Hovis music starts now...) when there was no booze at niters it was a completely different scene imo. Anyway...back to the question...erm, probably Saturday..Friday nights always seem a bit rushed for me. Although I am looking forward to the New Century do at the Co-op and that's on a Friday

Duffy On Jools Holland
After a bit of a read maybe my post was a bit harsh-she isn't a bad singer really and also I think that in retrospect Rowly wasn't saying that this girl was as good as some of the best Black proper soul artists but maybe some welcome relief from a lot of the other tat that us office types have to endure on daytime radio. For example this morning I've had: Wet Wet Wet Limahl Yazz Take That Michael Buble or whatever he is called Katie Melua to name just a few bad examples...this is on Imagine Radio the station of choice here (we used to listen to Smooth which was ever so slightly better but not much)....

Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
I went to a work non soul event on Friday night and there was a person there (I won't credit him with the title dj) who was playing MP3s off a laptop. He couldnt even work the floor in an event that consisted of 150 pissed up lawyers on the wrong side of 40 who'd been necking free booze all night. My boss had to send me up to sort him out..having no personal experience of djying in any format it took me about 2 minutes to a. work out how to cue the tracks up and b. get the dancefloor moving (Tavares if your're interested....) My point is that any old f**ker can dj off a laptop....I don't mind MP3s and CDs where it is the only format but where it exists on vinyl play it on vinyl wherever possible. And what if the records wear out? Well who cares as most of us will be dead by then and the saviours of the NS scene can get their MP3s out or whatever they have by then

Duffy On Jools Holland
A lot of fuss about nowt if you ask me...I closed my eyes and heard any even more whiny version of winehouse..if that's possible. Not my cup of tea sorry...and definitely not soulful..imo of course

Northern And Funk
Delegates of Soul anyone?? I like funk ( not the Mojo description of funk...obviously) spent a bit of time on the funk scene in the late 80s with my old mate Si Cheeba and I really enjoyed it. I imagine that it's never going to appeal to 60s fans but I don't think playing the odd funk influenced track at a night can be too troublesome. Like Dave said-go and have a chat or a shifty through a few record boxes until something comes on that you do like. So yes, imo funk does have a place on the rare soul scene

And the Jeanette/Justine question? I think it's possibly as there was another artist called Jeanette but I'm not sure. I like a bit of trivia- List Updated Includes Major Lance, Otis Smith And Many More
I love Baby washington, Move on. Credited to Jeanette instead of Justine (sure somebody knows why she changed her name later??) old mod scene sound...one of those r&b tunes that really makes you smile! I have one otherwise I'd have it- People Fighting On The Soul Scene At Soul Night
