  1. hi mick, so does that mean the second version has a string section added?
  2. correct chalky, 28/1/1965, written & produced by holland-dozier-holland 10" acetate - version without strings
  3. i echo pete's sentiments about this record, huge in it's day and from a midlander's point of view, vigorously championed by PEP, a dj who amongst all his varied attributes, had a discerning ear for soulful tunes. yes, it appeared amongst a plethora of fine tunes, all surfacing, fortunately for us, at the same time/same era. indescribably rare, it dosn't deserve to be mocked as are the afflicted, the fact that so few of the big guns do not possess this record or simply haven't thought of the possiblities of a revival, is the only reason that it is not massive all over again. i would, however, hasten to add that the undeniable audible clicks from the auction item, really do not enthrall..i'm pretty much sure that even the undoubted wizardry of technician, OZZ, couldn't mask the obvious...say, at the king's..probably the only nice thing it could possibly be is to look at, to admire...for several hundred pounds?......
  4. goosebumps?.....shivers down the spine??......there is ONE supreme hands down WINNER.....LINDA JONES, unquestionably, and without any shred of a doubt, THIS woman HAD IT ALL. not an octave on the chart she couldn't reach...coupled with THE genius that was GEORGE KERR, her contributions to soul music are nothing less than SUBLIMINAL!..we could talk for eternity about wonderfully dynamic orchestrations and the legendary and integral sax break that is the trademark of many historic northern soul records, but only ONE ARTIST can contrive a "vocal break", if such a thing exists...and that would lead all and sundry to conclude that i speak of "MY HEART NEEDS A BREAK", a song in itself that could easily have doubled for a blockbusting 007 soundtrack, when from out of nowhere, bursts forth, a mind blowingly sumptuous mini-aria that is breathtaking, yet not beyond the realm of a woman, mature beyond her years...she takes it in her stride with ease, pitched within the confines of kerr's heartwrenching lyrics. a true heroine of the northern soul saga, who seccumbed to diabetes, LINDA was taken from us, aged just 28 years in 1973, an incalculable loss in terms of her mastery of a meaningful song, her catalogue has no flaws, such was her very real greatness...had she lived, what price a performance on a stage in this country??.
  5. yep, always thought that..wonderful h.b. barnum orchestration and not a bad singer for a blonde!

  11. A truly great singer, an incomparable master of the art, an associate of an elite group of recording stars who ONLY ever made double-A sided singles.....vinyl worth playing out on any and every occasion. as every year passes, we mourn with increased intensity, the passing of so many icons whose invaluable contributions, have graced our scene and remain undiminished. more's the pity that his presence never touched our shores but we will be forever indebted to deon jackson for his wonderful portfolio of songs...that quite simply "make the world go round".

  13. don't mention the "couple you can't remember", there's more than enough there for a touch of the green eyed monster!
  14. view with trepidation...it'll be over in a flash, 5 or 10 minutes....whatever, it's a "short"...damage limitation at a bare minimum...not even time to breath or build up a head of steam between your ears ( who put matt baker in the pics?...it's ALLWRIGHT if i'm not mistaken...hope he didn't think graham was a rogue trader? ) fortunately no dustbin, no tank tops, no cuban heels, no wig...nice pie from hebden bridge though .....oh, and as an aside to the actual subject matter, PETE & SUE are two top soulies and there's nothing wrong with notts folk.
  15. spot on mr. mccabe The One Show....or as they will be known next week if it ain't right......T.O.S.SERS!
  16. don't think i'll have any problem mentioning soulsource LOADS OF TIMES!.....is that ok adey?
  17. stunning sets paul.....less coal, more soul!
  18. correct..um'd and ah'd about buying it again, he who hesitates, as they say......great tune, got the lp but have to disagree.....single version miles better and huge at "the manor"
  19. another one that butch was responsible for?
  20. really pleased there's a thread on this most unlikely of instrumentals to be classed amongst the very best on the northern scene. it's detroit and in the hands of coffey & theodore, oozes class. i have a mint issue in the original company sleeve which is also eye catching but it's what's in the groove that counts and i can't but help reaffirm my preferred phrase for this tune....had there ever been a 60's tv serial from the states to bear this name, it would have been "the american avengers"...maybe they would have auditioned jack lord to play steed's part!....either way it sounds like it could've been destined for something bigger and a vocal certainly would have given it extra emphasis...shame that the one that does exist is not up to dave's or our exacting standards.....think i'll give this a spin at prestatyn

tim brown had a 25 count about 3 years ago now and was selling them for £50...at the time i remember it selling for something like £250....so that must have knocked a hole in it prematurely.
  22. gotta agree with jordi on this one......quality right from the start but judging by plays later in the evening, the ante was well and truly upped!!.....some staggering money's worth there guys,...95 punters must have been in dreamland....the north east's answer to lea manor by the looks of it!.
  23. rest assured...vol.2 is on it's way in the spring....
  24. it's not very often tim's wrong on a value.....whereas he does make the occasional typo as well ( he is only human, afterall ) e.g couple of years ago we were at the mill on a friday afternoon and i pulled out from a front desk sales box ( the following weeks list ) a copy of "you've got to steal it"...played it,...ummed and aahed...put it back...price? £25. same day..GONE!. phoned him during the week and he told me he had almost 50 calls for it...why?....it should've been listed at £250...he honoured the deal and wrote it off as a slight abberation and i had it in me little mits.....felt like a twit or what?
