Venues Too `sterile`?
catacombs, spiritual home for me and the best learning curve that the west midlands had to offer, finger on the pulse tunes, courtesy of max, pep etc, just the greatest dancers wigan ever witnessed, great camaraderie, dark, twisty-turny, alcoved, renowned for a pressure cooker atmosphere, sweat riddled and a minescule dancefloor plus, lurking hidden dangers called concrete beams hanging over the tiny stage....( ooh, me 'ead!! )

Poll Northern Soul Showdown - Detroit Vs Philadelphia
had to be detroit as the city was the innovator and all others followed suit, with what turned out to be their own inimitable styles, but were meant to be the best mimic they could create at the time. the fingerprint of motown's house musicians is indelibly stamped on the myriad of labels and their wannabee stars and the disc's they created that ultimately, fell through the cracks in the sidewalk...and conveniently into the open arms & hands of us brits. a bit of an unfair showdown... chicago v l.a....very intriguing!.

Northern Soul An Illustrated History
chalky, the day we get a warts n' all account is exactly what we've been waiting for since we served our imaginary apprenticeship,a book can only get as close as possible to the impossible, fact is a good many well respected and influential folk have passed through heaven's gates, who would have chipped in their pearls of wisdom. what we arrive at now, are two people who have decided that time is passing by and the generations we are nurturing need an edict of relevance, be we the elders, judge it of supreme significance or otherwise....there have been too many uneducated false starts, even some of the books have, though enjoyable reads, been written from a personal perspective...the one's that probably act as an unsung gospel for us all ( and again, only time will tell ) have come from the pens of people with an acute understanding of how the scene ticks and evolves. neil rushton has been a friend for close on 40 years, tim brown just over 12 years, both have given the vast majority of their lives to the scene, with unflinching dedication...their books are concise, informative and chronologically sound. now we are on the verge of the archetypal, a film that to all intents & purposes mimics what is relevant and reverent about these type of books, that's warts n' all or near as damn it.

so do we agree that richard was PROBABLY the architect of the cover-up scene and that guy took the game to an even more intriguing level with his imfamous " cover up the cover-ups" ploy?

what about court davis?....try to think/she put the hurt and how about chris bartley " out of my mind"....and these are still supremely obscure.. to be honest i thought richard's appraisal of his own classic cover-ups list in the prestatyn mag crystalized all the info everyone knew but in one fell swoop...it is truly amazing to look at....apologies...in fact it's the "WHAT'S GOING ON" MAG handed out at the tower weekender.

i love this.......60 posts in and richard is still as popular a talking point as he has been throughout his career, he has left an indelible mark on so many of us, including how diverse our musical tastes have become, without perhaps realizing all along that HE in fact, was the catalyst. i get to see him regularly now, his magnetism is still obvious, his enthusiasm just as flamboyant ( be it for the modern side of things, such has been his progressive nature ) and his knowledge virtually unparalleled with the exception of mssr's brown & levine, though he does confess to amaze himself at some of the things he wasn't aware of but perhaps should have known...a learning curve very much like our own but he's still ahead of the game. listened to jm's clip of eddie regan.........wow, wow, wow...and its richard all over again with his stellar cover-ups!!

agree they're definitely up for playing steve, the irony being that to the up & coming generations, it's like playing something totally unknown again.

correct pete, lp tracks always prove popular and, in most cases, the only way to play an obscure sound....unless it got put on an acetate...and we all know the imfamous story of how richard lost his len barry lp!!

hi billy, just pulled it out of the hat as a tune from that era thats not necessarily been featured an awful lot in recent times, no instant connection for me to yate, but then i didnt go there,....just an assumption that when it had its day, it would have got some recognition at the casino, by somebody, maybe not richard, but you never know as he was playing len barry lp only. in brief, rufus lumley did get booted but you very rarely see those about now, though the lp does turn up occasionally.

positively, absolutely, definitely steve...re-examination of the collections is essential and in particular those cheapies you collected years ago that still to this day, have not recieved the recognition they deserve e.g how good does " you succeeded" by sandra phillips, sound? ( or is that tina britt? ) come to that, what about "look/ you're absolutely right" by that lady. heard the ken williams record on okeh just recently and the sandra phillips record on the same label is pure detroit magic. just remembered they were hammering "stop girl" by the 7 dwarves same time as coloured man, i walked away and mary saenz and the bellboys. mick derry was shelling out things like bernadette peters, the angels, reperata on rca, joannie summers, carol & gerri plus goodies like syng mcgowan and..... the awesome don gardner "cheatin kind",...yes, the chasetown man had this way back then. there was even an instrumental covered as the backing to yvonne baker's " you didn't say a word" that was actually "time's gone by" by music track.

classic searling.....one F**K off tune!, do you see too many of these grapevine's about??...i don't think so, and just how vibrant and fresh is tamala lewis?, nice to see the label again and re-visit the credits of one george clinton....however was this associated with jobette music?
