James Lavelle, shock !, at Club Sandino , Sub Club, Glasgow. Just before Mo Wax started and James was still working in Honest Johns. First time I heard Air 'I Dont Know Where Love', Gregory James Edition 'Aint no Sunshine', Michael James Kirkland 'Hang on in There', FBI 'Talkin About Love and a host of other amazing tunes crossing the genres of soul, jazz, brazilian and funk. A truly memorable night with, at that time, a very young forward looking dj holding the whole of the Sub Club in the palm of his hand. A night when each tune, most of which were unknown to the crowd, got bigger and bigger cheers as the night went on.
  3. iF you have got the time Jordan have a look through Discogs website re. the disco stuff if it looks obcure. You may find something to sell, if dad allows you to, giving you some funds to buy some soul 7s. There you go, thats you becoming a record dealer already !
  4. I wish I could find a copy of Paris Blues in the garage.
  5. Hi Trying to add an event but cant ? Did there not used to be an add event box ?
  6. Check your local Gumtree listings for Technics decks.A lot of house, trance and drum and bass djs seem to be selling record collections and decks, either realising their taste was crap or moving onto digital.
  7. Superb quote I must say. From my own perspective I actually embraced all the genres of 'music which had that feeling. For anyone who has missed out on this piece of white/blue eyed soul/r 'n b genius.... sit back and relax https://youtu.be/qK59nhh1tcg

Having djed for a long time I have always used the pitch control whenever i dj, obviously I'm not going to mess up a record by altering it unnecessarily, however sometimes the dancers dont quite appreciate the nuances and depth of a record at the normal speed. Listening to the popcorn scene sound, which personally I love, but find a wee bit scary to watch the dancers doing that dance, to records that I have always put a uk style of dance to, ours is more personal and insular, theirs is shared and as a couple dancing together actually quite sweet. In that scene , there seems to be a closeness in the dance which personally I cant remember because I was always into me

Aquarian Dream 'Look Ahead ' on 12" from the Phoenix double pack when played at 33 instead of 45 changes from a disco tune into a gospel sounding soul tune ! One of these discoverys at about 8 am when the record was put on at the wrong speed and nobody noticed. It became a bit of a party trick back in the day .
  10. ' Gorgeous ' , the perfect description for one of my all time favourites, Barbara Green ' Young Boy ', if you dont know/ have this record , buy it now.
  11. Talking about that phone call to Soul Bowl whenever I got a new list ,working in a further education college, I used to go along to the janitor's box and old Harry the Janny use to let me use the 'strictly not for personal use ' phone to make my call. Hiding behind the door he would listen in wonder at this foreign language that I spoke as I spent my weekend earnings. There was nothing worse than having to hang up in mid buy whenever a figure of authority came near to the box. Then phone cards came on to the scene..............
  12. Regarding requests for an Allanton/Shotts reunion possibility, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the venue had been demolished ?

I remember 'On the Move ',my first introduction to Bob Hoskins no less.
  15. Hi I had an experience like this recently when I played Harvey Averne ' Never Learned to Dance ' from the original NYC Fania Lp, bought from Soul Bowl in the 80's. A young guy came bounding over and looked at the Lp as it was playing. Trying to help him out with IDing the track I offered the cover to him to see, he turned his nose up, said, ' I thought that you were playing the original ', obviously meaning the £1000 45. A typical example of not seeing the wood for the trees, I didnt even bother to go into the other superb tracks on the album although to be fair at the end of the night we had a chat and he came round to my way of thinking,. Nick.

  17. Hi Djing at the Arches in Glasgow one Saturday night, first record on,approx 500 on the floor, when the Kodak Carousel projector above one of the decks came loose and fell on the arm of the deck that was playing. The solid steel case of the projector smashed the arm and I had to play with one deck for about an hour until a spare was finally produced. My set was dictated by looking for the longest 12" mixes that I could find and ,with each turnaround taking approx. 10 seconds, the whole place booed me during the silent parts thinking that I was unable to cue the next record in time. Nick.
  18. Perhaps he would have been confused with Elvin Jones ,the drummer ,if just Ivan Jones ?

Hi I never had the pleasure to see Chuck live, however, Trouble Funk at the International in Manchester was one of the most powerful funk experiences, to this day, that I have ever experienced. Although the Go Go scene was short lived in the Uk, I'll be dropping this on Saturday. https://youtu.be/-TLvgpbhd6E
