I did say in my first post that Mr. Manship would know.
It’s bloody brilliant anyway.

If you listen carefully to the Southwind track, it is simply the instrumental parts from standard Lou Pride vocal spliced together, and then doubled up, ie. first half = second half.
The story at the time was that it was a brand new recording, and that the added piano was linked to an Al Green session player, although the pianists name was never mentioned.
The aforementioned "Love's On Ration", is the backing track to the Four Seasons - Watch The Flowers Grow, using Vocal Elimination technology with added hiss to try and cover the remnants of the vocals.
Both tracks appeared at the same time, around 80/81 but it could have been an extra year either way.
I need to have another listen to both the vocal and instrumental. I would never have guessed it was the same track. But everyday’s a school day.

I can’t help you, but I’ve always thought it was fantastic.
Mr. Manship is probably the man?

Jesus wept. Just confirming my opinion there Paul.
Oh, and don’t forget to show films on a screen on the stage. Soulboy the movie, and the old Wigan casino documentary from the 1970’s.

It’s about opinions, we all have them. My earlier post was simply “my personal” opinion.
Good luck to everyone else.

Hmm,
Well for what it`s worth. I and many others are in our mid to late sixties, still dancing( and quite well in some cases) , yes there are divvies as you call em and they were also plentiful in the mid 70`s so no change there! I agree with the videos of some events but other events on show look pretty decent so it all depends on what you watch imo on that one. As for the mix of music yes at some events they want to please or draw a crowd of as many as possible, so go "off piste" with an eclectic mix which in many cases is as far removed from northern soul as gets and is truly awful..I avoid these events period. On your final point I agree, the music is very special and to me always will be, so I can put up with a few divvies, the occasional look at me pratts , the pott bellied I love NS but I really never knew it until tonight and all the other minor irritations, cos it sure beats playing crib and listening to Val Doonican down at the Derby and Joan. So as long as I can I will be out on the floor lost in my own little World with Frankie Beverley, The Parliments, Alice Clark, etc. and leave the moaning and griping to those that must. Lol.
What keeps you going, if you know every record?
To me, the magic was always hearing something new.
Back in the day, the ONLY way to hear the music was to go out.
What’s your motivation?
Everything has a lifespan.
I’ve found some new hobbies and moved on.

As far as I’m concerned it’s a dead horse that’s being flogged to death. Again and again and again!
The facts:
Apart from a few unreleased tunes, there are no new records.
In desperation to find something new, other genres of music are being played as up front.
The majority of us are in our sixties or over. It’s a dance scene, and we can’t dance anymore.
The divvies have taken over since the movie Northern Soul came out.
When I see videos of events it makes me cringe. It looks like a care home.
I went to a soul do a few weeks ago to meet some friends that I hadn’t seen for ages. Decent room, ear splitting sound system, couldn’t talk to my friends. Not many in, and many of those that were in haven’t been on a dance floor for thirty years. I couldn’t wait to get out.
The music is very special. But the scene is simply a social club for old people.

Not at all, just funny that we like the same genre of music but might rate records quite differently
Well I’m not really a soul music fan. I’m more a northern soul fan.
It’s about the song for me. Even the greatest soul voices have made some terrible recordings. To me, the song writers are the real heroes.
Take the record in question, the Jades. It’s the actual song that does nothing for me. The vocals and the backing are excellent. But that’s just my personal opinion.

Taste is a funny thing isn't it, I think it's superb
Indeed it is, and thank goodness for that.
No offence intended.

I must agree with that Jades 45. Bloody bad record that is. I wouldn’t give 5p never mind £5k.

I think there’s a definite drop in prices on certain items, but others are mind blowing!
Very strange.-

Help ... that's an absolute horror:
Please correct me, but I thought vinyl or metal acetates have an absolutely short lifespan or limited playback time ... !!As a collector and connoisseur, don't I have to try to get them on vinyl as quickly as possible?
Maybe that's the reason why I never really dedicated myself to this topic ...
Well that’s what I would do if I had any good acetates.
But here’s another thing.
What’s to say that the people that are transferring your one off acetate to vinyl, aren’t making a copy for themselves???
I know for a fact that this goes on.

Great post from Tim there. Always thoughtful and well written.
My own personal experience of this record, comes from much later in time.
I’m not certain whether it was the very first Lifeline all-nighter or the second one?
Anyway, some friends of mine were constantly regaling me on the quality cover ups that Butch used to play back in the day. And one in particular, was his old Del-larks cover up.
Well, I had been dying to hear this record, and all the other unknown to me sounds that Mr. Dobson had at his disposal.
So it was with this in mind that I drove out to Dewsbury and the first ever Lifeline at Sherringhams.
The place was rammed, and Butch did his usual 90 minute spot, which I recorded on a small cassette recorder. During that time, I approached Mark and asked if he could possibly play the Del-larks as I had never heard it? He replied that he couldn’t because he hadn’t brought it with him. But he promised to bring it next month, and would play it for me.
Only slightly disappointed, his set was incredible, I went away and thought no more about it.
Roll on to the following month, I was dancing away to Butch’s spot, when he suddenly announced over the mic. This one for Phil.
Boom! The place went mental. I’ve never seen a reaction like it. Needless to say, I loved it.
After that reaction at Lifeline, everywhere I went to see Butch, he opened with the Mello Souls. I can clearly remember the first CIS all-nighter in Manchester. We all trooped downstairs to another room that had a temporary dance floor, as Butch was playing in there. He opened with the Mello Souls again, and the reaction was even greater than before. I’ve still to this day never seen such a reaction as people rushed it seemed from every direction to get on the dance floor.
I must agree with Tim though. This type of record, and there are many, don’t sound like anything when played at home. These aren’t listening tunes, they are made for throwing yourself around to.
Absolute dynamite for me at the time.-

It was played at Burnley by myself and Cliff Camfield. Great record, very silly lyrics though.
I can’t remember who I sold it to now.
