Ian Levine
Not too keen on the records he produced but when you think of the records he broke at The Highland Room his contribution is immense. The golden era of Northern Soul IMHO was 73/74 & a lot of those tunes were brought to the fore by Ian. You only have to look at the Northern Soul top 500 book to see how many of those records are in there. I don't think Ian will ever win any popularity contests & many people found him unapproachable but he certainly made an indelible mark upon the soul scene in this country.

Room 101
Funnily enough there is a Room 101 at the Orwell. Soul Sam is threatened with incarcaration in there if he ever goes back to his "Blue Sharks/Burning Bush" dark days. The quality of tunes he plays nowadays guarantees his liberty.

Pop Masquerading As Soul
When Paul Anka was covered up as Johnny Caswell - we accepted it - though I suspect Mr. Caswell may be white also - apologies if anyone knows different. After the grand uncovering we all still danced to it & didn't desert the dancefloor when it was known who the singer actually was. It had the right "vibe" then & still does. That is what this crazy scene is all about & that's why we love it.

Pop Masquerading As Soul
IMHO Soul is in the ear of the beholder. Records by Paul Anka & Danny Wagner have been eagerly embraced by the Northern scene & rightly so. In a perfect world every record we like should be by a struggling black artist from the back streets of New York or Detroit - but that is Northern soul Utopia & not realistically how it is. I think if we are all honest there is a liking for the odd "pop ditty" or three in all of us.

Is This The Worst Record Ever Played On The Scene?
I don't like "My Sharona" either

Is This The Worst Record Ever Played On The Scene?
I have heard plenty of Northern Soul records. I have also heard plenty of uptempo pop records. The knack is to distinguish one from the other.

Is This The Worst Record Ever Played On The Scene?
Ged, I can think of something equally as nasty "My Life With You" - The Traditions. I have a a very low tolerance to naff pop records that are passed off as soul music. I have an antidote though - I just think about all the good stuff & then I don't feel so bad - beginning to sound like Julie Andrews now.

Tragic news indeed - hugely underrated IMHO - had his own unique style - another sad loss to the soul scene. RIP Willie

Just Had A Great Time At Lytham Nr B/pool
Why do some people include "let's have no politics & just enjoy the music" in their posts then do precisely the opposite? Can any dj honestly say they have never played a record of "dubious" origin? Think about the word honestly before you answer. Collectors & djs have this misconception that they own the scene - many of whom are so anally retentive that to actually be bothered to spend some time on a dancefloor & heaven forbid "enjoy themselves" is beyond them. Twenty dancers or one "chin stroker" - which of these adds up to a good night at a venue?

Modern Soul It Aint No More ?
Think all the "die hard" northern fans should carbon date DJs records to make sure the record wasn't manufactured after December 31st 1969. Heaven forbid that they would actually like anything made after that date. What do people think records like "Grooving At The GoGo", "Out On The Floor" & "At The DISCOtheque" referred to !!!!!!!!!! All the clues are there .
