  1. Derek, Do you mean Colin Bartlett? My Brother in Law John Broxup knocked about with Kerry McDermott. John is on holiday at the moment, but I'll ask him when he gets back. I met Kerry a few times a few years ago. He seemed to enjoy some very fragrant smelling tabs on a very frequent basis, so some of the conversations were interesting!
  2. Gary, why do you say "Yep, the record was smashed into pieces" as if we would all agree with you? What next, burn The 500 top records book cos you don't like it? Poor Kid
  3. Mark Tobin's nights at Stockport started around 92. His first night ended with Jackie Lee, Oh My Darling. What a way to finish!
  4. Not being funny Paul, but this is a non-starter. The music doesn't need messing about with. Its fine just as it is.
  5. When Paul B came along so Cathy B was not earning, and interest rates went up to 15%, and I went on a 3 day week at work, I sold my issue of Let My Heart and Soul Be Free/Whats the Use Of Me Trying by the Tangeers for a fiver, along with other classics such as a Saxie Russell Thomas demo etc. to one of the Burnley crew. I was off the scene then and didn't know the values, but this mate knew and even tried to barter me down!!! I know ethics doesn't come into it, but how many of you knowing my circumstances at that time, and being a fellow soulie, would have done that, or might some of you have kindly illuminated me on the true value?

Can you tell me how to post the sound file and I'll put a couple on here when I get home tonight. I'm on dial up at home, will that make a difference. I got them off a mate who's mate is a record reviewer for a large regional newspaper. I believe Jo Wallace has actually contacted him about using some of the tracks, but that might just be a rumour.

I have 7 CDs of unreleased Motown tracks, but some of the tracks have now been released. The quality of some is very poor, but the main contributor seems to be Ivy Jo. Why was this. Were these rough cuts to get the Funk Bros comfortable with the tune? Was it to give artists some inkling how the vocals would best fit the instruments? His rough version of Marvin's Its a Desperate Situation is brilliant. Also, an unreleased rough cut of Babs McNair YGLMB that is 4 minutes long is also terrific.

  9. Brilliant!
  10. Drew, This forum is an excellent place to learn about the times you couldn't be there and the places you couldn't visit. Also, the net is unbelievable for hearing sounds you may not know, Soulclub and Nick R etc. You keep asking the questions and posing the topics mate. We owe it to the "newer" or less experienced members, for coming on board and keeping this scene that belongs to all of us going into the future. Thanks, Brian B

Listened to Heatwave by the Vandellas last night. What an amazing intro!!!!!!
  12. Winnie, Burnley had a major team at the Casino from September 73 to its closing. We had the Burnley Corner from the 1st month! However, the team from Burnley from 73 to say 78, certainly never classed Wigan as a dance club, and never ever classed northern soul as a dance scene. That may have been the case later, but it was all about the music, which was 85% soul, 95 Northern Soul. Thanks, Brian
  13. Lost this thread last week. I did the National 3 Peaks last week in 22 hours 55 minutes, raising around £2000 for the local hospice. (We actually found the piano featured in the Times and on the news on Ben Nevis on Friday night, but the guys clearing the cairns got the credit). I asked in my original thread which 3 songs I should play on the top of each summit, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, but as stated, the post was lost when the site went down. So now we have done it, (and if anyone fancies having a do, its the second time I've done it and its the hardest thing I've EVER done) what should I have played on the summits, and no Robert Knight allowed. Thanks, Brian B

I Hear a Symphony - Stevie Wonder - Best record EVER made This Old Heart of Mine - The Isleys Love Starved Heart of Mine - Marvin Gaye 3 is too little to choose from, it could have been the top 50. How do we choose 3 from the vast array on offer?

I saw JJ Barnes live at the Blackpool Mecca in 1973. He did 2 shows and sang everything. The band did a warm up by playing Got To Get You Into My Life and the whole crowd howled with laughter. The band were gobsmacked! It then turned into a northern night with Levine and Jebb. We took a whole coach load from Burnley and had to skive an hour off work to get there in time as I think the show was on a Wednesday or Thursday. He was class.

The NIght F Valli and the 4 Seasons
  18. Baby I Don't Need Your Love by the RT as the Chants is probably the best English recorded northern soul track in my opinion. Brilliant!

The Hesitations "I'll Be Right There" is in my top 5. Words can't explain the feelings I have when I listen to this. I've even stopped driving and pulled over to listen to it!
  20. I may be an old fogie, but I never went to Northern Soul do's from 1969-70 onwards to listen to R&B, seventies or white pop, I went to listen to the Northern Soul we all love. This is one of them. Pop, bloody hell Baz, get real!!
  21. Gasher, Theres a big difference between burning a record that has "done the scene damage over the years", compared to one you just don't like! Mine has to be any 70s crap masquerading as a northern soul record. Major damage caused by the introduction of these to our scene.
  22. Thanks for the links, really interesting. Have Goldmine just lifted the Len and Bunny tracks of these CDs for their Ultimate Northern Soul of Philadelphia CD?

Roger, I'll spin the Goldmine disc tonight and get back to you.

I don't think the current scene could cope with a major "flashpoint" on the scale of the Wigan -Blackpool divide. We just need more acuurate information on the flyers, then punters can make their own informed choice whether to attend that particular night or not. Interesting point though, like politicians have said in the past that we need a good war to stimulate the economy, do we need a battle, followed by a lasting peace on the soul scene to re -invigourate it? Has anyone seen the film that has won a £20000 prize for its maker. Apparently about Northern Soul, set in Dundee, that then evolves into the Rave scene? Mentioned on the Beeb this morning. Its called Long After Tonight is all Over. Surely not in the same class as Once Upon A Time In Wigan?
