  1. Just renewed my aquaintance with Dottie Cambridge "Cry your eyes out" this weekend. What a pile of crap. Can't believe it's Dorothy Moore.
  2. BBC2 wasn't it? I could understand if it was on BBC1 they'd need to dumb it down, but on one of the other channels no way Jose! We want proper journalism. They've done some excellent documentaries in the past. Saw one on Pet Clark the other week - great. I take Pete's word for it on the first two episodes (I gave up), so why was the soul one so bad? It must be down to the BBC's "DIal up a Talking Head" policy where they have a short list of subject matter experts. I don't understand why Trevor Nelson is viewed as some sort of expert - he know nuffink! Mica Paris - game bird, but again the knowledge ain't there. Wasted opportunity.
  3. Have to say just having written two chapters in my book on Scepter's Hob gospel label, I have found the whole genre quite fascinating. Never took any notice of it before.
  4. The Gospel Chimes were Jessy Dixon's group Roburt. I've listened to their Hob albums this morning and there seems to be quite a few lead singers on those recordings (including James Cleveland, Dixon, Claude Timons and now Lee Charles!) and it would take a while to work out who was who and where Lee was, but interesting that he sang with them and is on their recordings. There is no mention of him on the albums since the Chimes were recording all of Jessy's songs and the liner notes are just a review of the tracks for putative record buyers. It also opens up the possibility of the Riverside LP of Lee Charles singing spirituals also being our man as well..... Good addition to the Lee Charles story! PS: Dave, the Barry White Lee Charles is a UK guy isn't he?
  5. Dave, Changing Scene When the City Sleeps... I've got copies with both B sides, but my one with the place where sorrow hides has no address on it.
  6. Dave am not sure at all it's the same guy. There was another one who had an LP oN Decca as well I think early 60s - a sort of cover versions thing. Dim and distant memory cos I wrote and researched that article ten years ago+ now.
  7. Since Uncle Dave Thorley is on this thread, the Down east label was also tied up with a smaller label that gave us a great Stafford 45......A bit of fun.....first one with the correct answer wins a car etc etc....
  8. Yes agree with Dave. What can I do much rarer, though there are copies about. Steve
  9. Interesting about the Gospel Chimes, they were on Carmen Murphy's Hob label early / mid 60s. I'll dig out the albums and see what I can find out about Lee on there.
  10. I am gobsmacked at the price of this. It's a great record but f.f.s. (Nev you can quote me on that as well )
  11. Did you see the article I wrote on Lee? It's on the web. But yes agree, Steve

Yes exactly Tony, same as The Sweets. actually the other Sandy Golden that Pete posted has Nate's number on, but having checked it looks like an LA release and not Las Vegas as I previously thought.

The Sweets were LA both their 45s. The producer was LA too. The other Sandy Golden that Pete posted was I think a Vegas number - I did check it at the time as I suspected a Rosen Rat. (but then again LV is only a 4h drive from LA and a well beaten path for acts). Everything from ashtrays to tin plate used in making percussion sounds. Forget DC I'd say....
  15. Yes Las Vegas or somewhere odd wasn't it?
  16. Jason it hasn't come up for sale in recent history. So any comparison of how much Richard played Jimmy W or whoever for a copy back in the 80s when Jocko was on his sebatical is kind of meaningless.

Dunno for sure if Sandy Golden is a made up name, a different singer or one of the Sweets with a new name.

What's wrong with knowledgeable members from anywhere else matey? They are supposed to be Felice Taylor and two of her sisters who had previously recorded a 45 on Valiant. Also worth noting that the producer of Soul Town 45 = producer of Masterpiece 45.....but of course if any US members know more they'll jump in and correct us I am sure....
  19. Floor Packer though Pete and I love it.
  20. Sven has seduced some of the "crossover" fraternity with this one. Heaven knows why, thousands of better records out there, but that is the market where you'll sell his music Cuboulie.
  21. Jordan, you are years too late m8. Some guy in the US tried it, amassed millions of largely unsellable records then started crying because no one would give him his $M retirement pot. Then there was another dude who was going to buy one of everything and put them in a temperature controlled warehouse. You got to come up with something better man!
  22. Always been a hard one. Soul Bowl had a handful in the 80s and they disappeared in a matter of hours. Since then the odd one has shown up, got mine from Butch, but mostly the copies are weak vg. Someone has got a nice record!
  23. Soul a bit different though, far more music produced and far more famous than doo wop ever was. Doo wop never went global or appealed to younger fans beyond the old timers who carried the flag. But I do agree a lot of soul records will not get sold.
  24. Trouble is for someone like me I buy individual records not batches of records. I've recently been collecting Hob gospel records for research for my book, and been picking up a lot for $5-$10. With the new postage I am going to be a lot more selective.
