  1. It doesn't take much these days fella.....
  2. I don't mind if people want to offer dance lessons in a dance studio - up to them, entrepreneurs etc,,,.....same as Zumba etc....but in a venue - that's crossing the red line....
  3. Hi Wayne, agreed on the internet. There were a couple of other sellers doing reggae and soul, and Rob Messer too, though bluntly nice fella that he is, he is not going to have anything I haven't already got. But apart from that the other couple of stalls with anything only had some beaten up UK pseudo-funk instrumentals, and old Soul pack leftovers like Detroit Emeralds later 45s on Westbound and don't figure on my radar as "interesting". There was a guy with a deep funk box which had a couple of nice bits in it, but not cheap - 2000 prices when deep funk was the emperors newish clothes.....On balance best off staying at home with your good lady....Des T had a few interesting 45s at a reasonable price, more sweet / stepper stuff, spent a few bob with him, but that was it. Steve
  4. I know what his name is "O" - just being disrespectful by pretending I can't remember. Anyway it's all about how you feel, plenty of turkeys on the dancefloor, often see some dancing to a completely different record to the one that's playing - you think 'Jees have they got their I-Pod on with a different tune playing?'....No worries though, the reality is no one cares as long as the person dancing is having a good time...all this "you got to do these moves in this order to be a proper soulie" such a load of cr*p. Get on the floor and be yourself!
  5. went to the one in London last weekend in Brick Lane - not a soul one but bigged up as featuring soul....really sad, and so far away from the days back in the 90's when we had Anderson, Manship, Withers, Plumb, Dick Sniff, Adey "Silver Fox", Des T and an assortment of other fellas all selling their wares.....Then you could spend a whole day looking at records. Last weekend all I'll say is thank goodness Des had a stall.....
  6. Could you imagine it at Wigan back in the day?... The new weekly intake all offered dance lessons by Sandy or whatever his name was at the back of the hall......I think not....dear oh dear, what next lessons on how to sew on a badge.,.,
  7. edit sorry I thought it said "Most travelled Railcard"
  8. Exactly, watch and practice at home is how we did it,,,,,that said if anyone is offering dance lessons I am sure I could benefit from some I don't seem able to do acrobatics anymore.....
  9. Hi Mike, OK it has a really good sound system (until some DJs change the setting) It also has some great DJs... ATB, Steve
  10. OK thanks for clarifying...I only buy, don't sell But I am getting sympathy with Dave, about the increasing trend towards "paypal as a gift".....
  11. Good venue Good sound system Good dance floor good prices for booze and.... Great DJ's
  12. Paypal still get paid tho, all that is tranferred from seller to buyer is WHo pays PP.
  13. Why they still get paid don't they? It's just who pays them....or am I missing something

Don't let one bad night put you off.....everyone has them once in a while.
  15. Interesting, I agree with Roburt on Dellwood they put out 7s as well on promotion, which shows that there was an intent to try and have a hit record. Crazy Cajun, not sure this weas a tax scam just the weird and eclectic world of Huey P Meaux.....which may have included various tax scams....
  16. For a while yes but then they went their separate ways...by the early 60's...Some Maestro records appear with JM and "The Crests" although in reality they weren't there......it was a source of friction between Maestro and the remaining Crests.

What I learnt from my experience, which was probably about the same time as Dave's was NEVER rely on a promotor to tell you you've got free reign / do your thing etc. Do your own research or don't accept bookings if unsure. Much happier for all.....

There's another one next spring.....anyway hope you go back. yes the hotel one was probably The Grosvenor. It's now a much bigger event....and even better too.... ...... Anyway back to intolerance......the only intollerance I have ever witnessed on the soul scene hasn't come from the "rare soul" or "progressive" whatever you want to call it elements. In the 90's I once made the mis-judgment of taking a booking "up north" in the NW which despite being told by the promotor to "play what you want they're a good open minded crowd", was just a local social night for wigan oldies fans. I did a 60's set but of course I didn't have Judy Street, Younghearts, holly st James, Paul Anka in my box. Feck me you should have heard the noise...... "Why haven't you got Drizabone?", "Call yourself a DJ?", "Get this sh8t off","Every self respecting DJ has Barbara McNair" etc etc....That evening I met the most ignorant, unpleasant and musically retarded bunch of knobs I have ever encountered! (now there's a bit of intollerance from me!) Since then I have had one or two mis-matches of expectation over the years same as all DJs, but nothing as unpleasant.
  19. Hi Jez, I assume it was the UK guy rather than Gino Washington from detroit?
  20. agree Sean, northern fans much more of a rare breed down here. Though they do pop up more often than I expect - even a couple at work now.....doing their own thing.

great record.....way too good for hand bagging..... Yum Yums "It's gonna be a bag thing"....
  22. Point is at most weekenders people have a choice of rooms - so they vote with their feet and the biggest room by far is always the oldies room. Prestatyn a few years ago got a good modern vibe going as well, rammed. Sorry didn't go last year to the new Prestatyn, so can't offer a comment either way, and don't tend to go to the other big weekenders anymore except pop in at Cleethorpes. Weren't two rooms created because some people were moaning about "across the board" - get this "sh*te off play something we know" etc? And just for the record, I am not a "soulie" I am a free man!

Not scary at all Bob...just on a very different scene....Now might I be so bold as to suggest that you venture back to Skeggy and the original weekender there in a couple of weeks time. There are four rooms of soul music, and a great friendly crowd who all get along. And you won't have to dance next to a bunch of Kermit the Frogs.....or p*ssheads waving blow up bananas etc. And the music will be great too. Had to chuckle at the Butlins poster.....
  24. Both posts nail on the head.....
  25. Yup closed it down as it was merely about the attendance so am trying to adhere to the keep it current theme, we got enough threads running about ns....handbags, poll thread etc...Steve
