  1. Got to agree with you here. I too can't afford the £1000+ tunes and in a lot of cases don't think they are worth it. So it is rummaging about for good tunes at good prices that does it for me. I don't get out a lot these days but my idea of a good set is someone playing a mix of tunes that is their choice rather than that of the chin strokers or the baggies and vest brigade. Got to be good records obviously but a personal choice is better than hearing the same rare records in every set. I remember an early Prestatyn where almost every DJ played "Just a boys dream" - great record but if it is only played to show you've got it; that's just a dick wave . I haven't heard Butch play out recently but it does seem that as well as playing stuff that is rare and/or unknown he also seems to play stuff for the sake of the tune. Maybe I should get out more and go and have a listen to his sets. I think it was a few months ago that he created a small rise in demand for Robert Thomas - Salvation - Charay by dropping it into his set. Great choice, great record, low price. Prior to that it was Talkin Bout Ya Baby - Mighty Marvelows that immediately went on wants lists after he played it. Daft really, as anybody could play these records out because they are good and they don't cost a lot. Strange that people only start wanting them because "Butch played it". I think playing what you can afford is a really good thing as it should give more variety to a night. Maybe it is the way forward? A music policy of "Play What You Can Afford" - I suppose it would just end up being over run with those that want to demonstrate their wealth though.
  2. If a competent DJ played Northern Soul off CDs (or anything for that matter) to a wider audience, IMHO that would be a good thing. It might get more people interested and cross to a new generation. There are two reasons why asking this forum about CDs v OVO will allways get a negative reaction. 1. Most people have collections of original vinyl and if this is no longer revered the value of it might drop 2. The majority on here seem to want this to be a limited scene, a closed shop - you can only play if you have records that you can't get. So Gazza/Graham you have two options: 1. Sell your house if you have one (and possibly next door) and spend the money on something that you've managed without for years. 2. Do what you want without asking for anybody else's approval Cheers Paul (Still buying records)
  3. Hurrah! 3 pages of drivel followed by some sense. Well said that man.

Recently posted a vid om my blog of an acapella version of mustang sally, it was a toss up between that and this one:
  5. How on earth has this thread lasted 8 pages? Good grief!
  6. To me, OK to DJ with means it plays OK and sounds great when played out, the odd pop and crackle doesn't really matter over a loud system. But if you are the sort of collector that wants perfect labels and no marks on the vinyl an "OK to DJ with" grade immediately rules out the purchase - no need to ask "how VG++ is it?" Looking at it another way; I wouldn't want to DJ with absolutely mint records as regular play on other peoples' decks would just knacker them anyway. Anyone else been faced with a 10p piece taped to the head shell? Had me umming and aahing with my Jock Mitchell I can tell you! Anyway, at least you know "OK to DJ with" records are originals.
  7. Very true Chalky, ebay UK is hardly worth looking at these days - things are either optimistically priced or lost amongst all the recent boots.

I don't know if this may be a help to you: Music Magpie They pay cash for used CD's. You type in the bar code for the CD; they make you an offer; you package the CDs and send them; they pay you. Not used it yet as I've only just found it, but it may be useful to offload unwanted CDs.

  10. "a little light popping"
  11. There's one on [my site.]
  12. There's a copy of this on at the mo at £50 Think I have two copies, both mint minus. Cheers Paul
  13. It's a trailer advertising a film. The thing with advertising is that if it doesn't appeal to you then you can rest assured it isn't aimed at you.
  14. I can't remember but it was three records that had a good value, I hadn't paid full wack for them and they were going to go on my sales site. So I reckon we were both happy with the deal I was anyway, love the record.
  15. You traded yours with me
  16. That's what makes the record so good!
  17. Buy scratched records!
  18. There's a Jackie Paine on ebay [here]
  19. Yeah, I get the touchy feely thing, I like to know where my music is. But would I get a shiver down my spine from a bootleg? Maybe only when the "original" is on acetate (which are not real records anyway). I dunno, I'll have to try this out for myself. I suppose it has to do with what I said about vinyl being the medium of the 70's - people our age are used to it and so prefer it. I remember when CDs first came out and vinyl was pronounced dead, loads of people slung records and replaced them with the same albums on CD. Motown re-released a load of Albums as 2 on 1 CDs. I liked my vinyl though so didn't bother (I'm tight too).
  20. They are only making and selling them because people are buying them, that's the saddest thing. I cannot get my head round why people want bootleg vinyl these days. I can understand 70's bootlegs because vinyl was the medium of the day (until the technical revolution that was the cassette tape). But why buy 2010 bootlegs? CD's are cheaper, lighter and more convenient, downloads are much cheaper and lighter and much more convenient. What kind of thrill does anyone get from playing a 2010 bootleg in the comfort of their own home? Playing them out is bizarre, its like pretending to have something you haven't. And why bother? If you don't have an OVO policy then play the tunes from something more convenient, like a CD or a laptop. I've seen people playing out Motown Yesteryear which I thought was pretty crap but 2010 bootlegs? I find it wierd. Can anyone explain it? I can only hope that it is a younger generation who are discovering vinyl and NS at the same time.
  21. I got a record from the states packed like this recently. A fragile thing packed in 2 fragile things makes it only marginally less fragile. A piece of glass packed in between 2 pieces of glass? BTW anybody collect Olivia Newton John records?
  22. You'll probably find that the pictures shown in that listing are scans of an original so you won't see a lot of difference. I would imagine whatever turns up will be new vinyl with new labels scanned from an original. Best thing to do is only buy scratched records from now on with all these bootleggers about.

I'm with ken - soap and warm water. Small bit of washup in fairly warm water Immerse the vinyl (not the label) and watch the sh*te float off. Sometimes hold record in water for a minute or so slowly turning. Immerse in clean warm water then wipe with a wet, proper record cleaning cloth. Dry with a different (dry) record cleaning cloth. Repeat if required. Sometimes I rub soap onto a wet record (after initial immersion stage) with my finger and then immerse it in clean water, before wiping and drying. Seems to get rid of all the dust and grime that accumulates on records and the water gets rid of a lot of static. Doesn't get rid of the scratches but some records that look pretty trashed play really well after this treatment. Doesn't cost 2 Grand either! Edit: Think I'll put this in my blog
