  1. I've used carvers for some stuff and always had to alter settings as really poor in comparison to an actual vinyl issue. As you say they are adequate but you guys do such a good job giving us some top quality unissued stuff why spoil it with a carver?
  2. off topic and personal posts deleted. One or two others being looked at. Keep this on topic and knock the personal stuff on the head, no need for it and some of it uncalled for.
  3. I do agree with Ady to a point with cds, why not play the unissued stuff from cd's? Getting them cut to a carver dulls the sound too much for me.....the acetates from Timmion are far better quality than the vinyl carvers but I can't see the point really spending 20 quid to play something which the cd is the original format?

  5. Yeah I read that Russ, slight oversight, didn't help when I saw the track list o the Shiptown site which only shows him as the only credit? Anyone got a scan of the original release, the one that doesn't show fast on it. Seen it at Andy D's but can't remember the details.

  8. be interesting to find out just who did own the rights between Biggs passing away and he son regaining control. Was it Ida Sands or Charles Amos Hunter? I wonder if Charles Amos Hunter being the sole credit on the track did have the rights to do as he wished once Noah Biggs passed? from the history page of the Shiptown site (John Smith's words).... The label's activities were slowing anyway, but Noah Biggs death in 1978 signaled the end of the line for the organization. None of Frank Guida's roster was still enjoying hits, Wilson and Jerry Williams had moved on to progress their recording careers elsewhere and even Lenis Guess was ready to up sticks and head out to New York. The 'Norfolk Sound' had run its course. With Shiptown in disarray, Barbara took a break. She then teamed up with a jazz band and started to sing again for a few live shows locally. But things just weren't the same for her and so she went back to her roots in the church. Control of the recording studio and catalogue slipped away from the family and that could have been the end for Shiptown. But record collectors started to unearth the label's old 45's and those that found favour were soon commanding high prices. Howard Biggs moved on in life and pursued his own career path. 25 years on though, he discovered the unending interest in his father's record label. He managed to get control of the label back after realizing that it was something worth owning.

  11. Probably Johnny Moore looking the years. Was it Ray Lewis you saw? Think he lives over here now. I was on holiday in Cornwall last year, cottage in middle of nowhere and he did a gig in the local pub, tiny village. Apparently it was a favour for the new landlord who he knew. Can remember Ray doing the first Yarmouth Weekender along with Lew Kirton, Rocky Roberts and few more.

  13. If you can get the Book LA Vocal Groups 1945-1965 you should, it a fantastic read. Written by Steve Propes and Galen Gart. Some superb photos of many of the LA vocal groups of the time. Anyway attached are scans of the pages relevant to the Incredibles, don't think you will find anything better out there. Hope you can read it as I don't want to have to type it all out
  14. Hi Gilly, hope you and Nicola are well. I've been in contact with Hadley a few times since you pointed me in his direction He told me about this cd a couple of years ago......so its been a while coming. Be interesting to see if there are is any other information as he only knew the lead James Mitchell name, he couldn't remember the others. Hadley Murrell did confirm he wasn't in the group. The backing group was the JBJ's from San Francisco. Hadley was the owner of Wind Hit and the producer of the tracks. All four were airmen based at Luke air force base. All now dead. What is interesting is in the photo above there are five in the photo, Hadley said to me there were four in the group and I've photo somewhere with just four Looks a cracking cd and will definitely be on my shopping list come April.
  15. I would agree none crossover IMO but William Cummings is as you say out and out Northern, so is the Ralph Graham I've seen mentioned. Off top of me head without much thought my ultimate would probably be Chuck Cockerham - Have I Got A Right. Still got a tape or two of yours Cliff in the garage from the mid 80's with this on.
  16. I was under the impression Dish a Tune/Charlie Amos Hunter owned the rights having bought them from Biggs? Biggs later buying them back?? I'll have to go and read the story again. I thought there was a date for the re-issue or at least a clue with the time Biggs lost ownership?

  18. Apparently if I remember the story correctly the owners of Shiptown lost ownership for some time and the new owners put out the remix, the one shown in the scan. The original definately slower and the second has added brass (I think)....it has some added instruments. The one on the Ol Virginia is the second release. John Smith done an extensive story on the RSF.

  20. he was probably in one of the splinter Drifters group, don't think he was an original drifter or one of the other line-ups who was with Atlantic? They did rotate a little and once had the whole group sacked. There was a court case a while back regarding who had the rights to the name, dunno how it went. There's quite a few who can claim to be a member of the drifters, whether it was one of the official line-ups or one of the others.

  24. It is probably how I am reading it. Records like that are played though, Mick H plays his fair share of funky stuff, so does Karl Heard and others. Trouble is records like the Crow aren't to everyone's taste, not back then and they won't be today.
