What Do Think To This Then Is Some Going To Be Lucky
Well if it looked kosher, wasn't such a poor picture, was being sold by someone with more than 41 feedback, wasn't located in France and had a sound file, perhaps I wouldn't have thought it was expensive.

Chicago Soul Icon Carl Davis Passes On
Another in a growing line of sad losses. I hope that people close to him can can take some comfort from just how much his contribution to music was appreciated by so many of us. A gentleman and a truly truly talented individual. God's speed Carl.

Flaming Emeralds - Difference In Colour
All issued at the same time just different coloured paper stock used for the labels. Like the Superlatives. I've had multiples of both though less blue ones maybe I'm not typical though

Longer Dj Sets?
I always have some records in my box I'd rather not play; sometimes that's because they just don't fit the set, othertimes because they're only in there as my 'lowest common denominator' records. But I never ever have things in my play box that I don't like.
-
Longer Dj Sets?
I'd travel a long way to hear some DJ's do a three hour set digging really deep into their collections (though it'd still only be 75 or so tracks). Carl and Maria, PhilT, Dave Withers, Pete Hulat, Andy Dyson, Butch, Mick Smith, John Weston and probably others. There's no way any of them would play a whole set that anyone could say "I didn't like any of that" well not unless their ears are just painted on.

Arctic Lp 1003 (August 67)
Could well have been a vanity project but also a potential vehicle for Jimmy Bishop to top up his royalties pot. The only real interesting track is the intro by Donny Brooks which shows what a showman DJ he was. Its interesting to contrast his style with our typical 'northern' DJs some of whom don't even use the mike.
-
Longer Dj Sets?
I can't afford to buy everything I like without spending money on stuff I don't just to get DJ spots.
-
Longer Dj Sets?
Any DJ that plays stuff he or she doesn't like is an idiot IMHO.

Longer Dj Sets?
I think I was one of the first to vote on this but didn't leave a comment at the time. I voted longer. I know that there are lots of DJs that people on another thread have said they want to hear (a lot of whom I haven't heard play ironically) and that longer sets gives less chances. Short sets all too often lead to 'lowest common denominator' playlists IMHO. 12 or 13 records say in a half hour set means too many play 4,5,6 or even more records that you know everyone in that venue knows. Perhaps even stuff you know the residents play regularly; unless it is a really open minded crowd that is. I think if DJ had to perform for a couple of hours we'd see their quality and we'd soon know who can cut it without the need to stick to the 'safe' options. Depth of knowledge and breadth of collection would count for something not just having a 100 count box of the 'here and now' tunes. If all the guests are right for the venue then you should get the type of records that the night is about. If you go to a venue and the DJ is playing stuff that doesn't suit the crowd thats an issue for the promotor and how well he knew the DJ, not an issue about the length of the spot.

Dirty Secrets: Which "oldie" Will You Never Ever Get Sick Of?
Be a good DJ rosta that could deliver all of those in one event. Ohh hang on I think the Southport Weekender will have all them covered. OT - Never tire of Tony Middleton - To The Ends of The Earth - a world away from the traditional 'oldie' but thats what blew me away when I first heard it.

Sometimes It Sounds Great, Sometimes Awful
Willie Tee - Sweet Thing. On its day its superb and ohh so soulful and then again I can think I don't even like 'funk'. Depends what other records it gets mixed in with I think.

John Manships Price Guide
Given that John's ability to get top dollar with auctions continues but prices elsewhere have pretty much collapsed, I wonder how realistic a new guide will be. I know its only a guide but I start off expecting anything over about £200 in his guide to be obtainable for half its book and in dollars not pounds if you look hard enough and wide enough. The cheaper things are more accurate and the real top auction pieces will always be in demand. Its a guide and so I find the last one at least as useful in judging the relative value of different 45s as any new one would be. Mine is dropping to bits mind
