  1. John Manship has a copy of 'Try Me' with 3 days to go- good luck!
  2. Nolan Porter in Blackpool a couple of years ago, but the absolute worst has too be Parliament/Funkadelic at Belle Vue Manchester, late 70s- oh dear, so bad. Tim.
  3. On Millennium eve, I played 'People Get Ready' as my first tune of the new Millennium, didn't take a lot of thought to choose it from all the tunes I had heard/owned over 40 years. He will always be 'the gentle genius' !!!
  4. Just seen this and played the sound clip- Artist: Unkown Artist A Side: You Know You're Wrong B Side: I Am Your Leader Label: DCT Format: 10" I thought I recognised it, after some thought, it's the title track from Walter Heath's 1974 album- "You Know You're Wrong Don't You Brother' on Buddha. Maybe Mr Manship ain't heard this album!! Anyone concur? Tim.
  5. The prospect of some unreleased Willie Tee stuff is exciting! Tim

  7. Lots of candidates on Don Covay's brilliant 'Super Dude' album- Leave Him. I Was checkin' out as she was checkin' in. Bad mouthing. Somebody's been enjoying my home. I wonder what was on Don's mind when he cut the album!!! Ha. Tim.

  9. It appears Lawrence Murphy was Darrell's personal manger according to Billboard's Talent Edition from 12/28/68 - Thanks for the info. Looks like individuals were credited as writers to receive royalties that were not due to them! I'm currently reading Chuck Berry's book, his first big hit "Maybelline' was written by him, but the Chess Brothers added Alan Freed , the influential New York DJ as a co writer, hmm.. can't think why they would do that! I suspect this type of exploitation was rife in those days. Tim.
  10. Interesting find, the writers credits are also interesting, well, to me anyway! The Stateside Darrell Banks is credited to 'D Banks', the Jackie Wilson version "Darrell Banks', a (pretty poor) version by Tyrone Davis is credited to "Darrell Banks & Donnie Elbert' . I read somewhere years ago that Donnie Elbert was co writer, and there were some legal proceedings to ensure he got paid etc. So, who the hell is "Lawrence Murphy' shown as co author on the Argentinian issue? Any fellow 'anoraks' out there who can shed any light on it? Tim.
  11. How about "Look At California' - Maze featuring someone called Frankie Beverley! From their first album in 1977. Also, Bobby Womack's version of "California Dreaming".
  12. Anything by Helen Shapiro, FFS this is supposed to be a soul scene. Tim
  13. Leroy Hutson at The Jazz Cafe last Friday, third time lucky for us, he cancelled at Manchester Ritz in 2014, and Blackpool last year, but the wait was worthwhile. What a show, too many class tracks to mention, what a man, blew my mind! Tim.
  14. Just acquired a copy of "Strength Of A Woman' - The Phyllis Hyman story, this has been out of print for years, re printed now, just getting stuck into it, absolutely fascinating. Tim
  15. Good, not bashing those dances floors as often, but still wasting money on records!
  16. Shows how much I know!! How are you Kegsy? Tim

  18. This guy only made the one album, amazes me that three tracks were picked up for dance floor action. His background seems to be in rock music, his sister was married to Frank Zappa. He was due to do a Q&A at Blackpool in June, allegedly to tell tales based on hanging out with Zappa and his cronies, fortunately he didn't turn up.......no loss as far as I was concerned! Tim.
  19. Been thinkin' this over for a couple of days, thought I'd add my thoughts based on the artists I think !, I probably own most most tunes by, here goes- Bobby Womack, Otis Clay, James Carr, OV Wright, Bobby Bland, Walter Jackson, and......Marvin Smith (mostly Artistics of course) Tim.
  20. Hell, what a compilation! The term 'Low Rider Soul' is a new one on me, these are the type of tune I listen to most of the time, wasn't aware I was into 'Low Rider Soul' , I simply try to acquire 'quality' tunes, must of been doing something right for the past 40 years. Will be ordering the CD immediately. Tim.

  22. More..... I recall two tunes from that night, Dynamics on Top Ten, played by Kev Roberts, most of us had not heard it before, the other, oh dear...... Hawaii Five O by The Ventures. Just goes to show that records that have absolutely nothing to do with Soul Music are nothing new!! Tim.
  23. No great memories I'm afraid, I took some pictures, still have them, pretty poor, I was too far from the stage. I also have a flyer, lots of acts mentioned that did not appear. Tim.
  24. Linda by a two miles!! Bought this from a market stall in Soho in the early 70s, always amazed it has never had regular spins. Every time I hear it, I can't help thinking if The Whatnauts, when making the record, knew what was to come after one minute! Ha. Tim.
