Well, of course, it all originated with reggae sound systems in Jamaica, and was also utilised with hip-hop block parties in the seventies. Just another two examples of DJ driven scenes, where competitiveness amongst DJs elevated the music to new levels...
  2. Slightly different take on the Fryers 45 - so you need both!
  3. REDUCED TO £65!
  4. It was on the original SISTER FUNK Vol. 1 but was hastily withdrawn due to, err, licensing problems...
  5. It's on Gonks Go Beat soundtrack - but can be easily found on the not-as-easily-found-as-you-might-think "World Of Lulu Vol. 2" Her version of "Show Me" is pretty good, and if you're venturing into early 70s territory "Move To My Rhythm" is pretty funky. I've just realised I know Simon from Brighton...

  7. Anyone got a spare they want to flog me?
  8. Well, thanks everyone for your help and interest. A Soul Sourcer has offered me a copy, bit more than I wanted to spend, but think I'll probably go for it... it's obviously rarer than people think and in demand. A dealer told me he had a box of a hundred years ago, and he couldn't give them away - where are they all now? I quite agree about Mr. Fields recent output - his single on Truth & Soul from last year was absolutely stunning - "My World" b/w "Love Comes And Goes" - two amazing slices of down-tempo deep soul with a beat. If you ever get the chance to see him live with the Dap Kings, jump at the chance - great voice, great entertainer... [oops, must've been typing at the same time as Jason... ]

"DJ FRIENDLY" had a copy yesterday - just checked and it sold for £80... DOH!
  10. And also for reference she had a funky early 70s 7" on Jasman "Git Back".
  11. Nope, it's not - but can I find one??? YOU can't even find it, and you've got it!!! If it turns up, and you fancy turning a quick buck on it...
  12. Hi Joe Thanks for the link, but that's the wrong record. Got that already! Any other pointers?
  13. Okay, this is probably exactly the wrong time to be asking but... ...I REALLY WANT A COPY OF THIS RECORD QUITE BADLY NOW! Lee Fields "Take Me Back" (Angle 3) Decent price offered, sure these are knocking about in collections. Just a matter of getting them out! Any help VERY much appreciated. PMs please.
  14. Well, not really - then the item would come up as "auction completed, item no longer available for sale" or something. Gasher's talking about the auction being pulled and becoming an invalid item. Ebay stop auctions for lots of daft reasons, like if you say you'll accept cash, try and add on 4% to use paypal etc.
  15. Maybe people just can't be arsed with the whole "offers" thing?

This is something I've never understood - it's implied that the big venues properly pay DJs, so they can afford these "big" records. As far as I'm aware, a DJ fee for an hour slot will rarely be over £100 - which isn't going to get you too far when it comes to the "big tunes". Most DJs who have the best collections simply have quite a lot of money to begin with. Obviously some were picking records up for buttons in the 80s, but c'mon - Ginger paying 2 or 3 grand or whatever for that Parliaments 45. If I was a DJ starting off, I'd quite happily mix legal re-issues with originals. All the Lou Pride stuff was recently issued, with money going directly to the artist - what on earth would be the point in shelling out a grand for an original? REALLY? To show that I somehow have more of a "right" to play it than another DJ with more spare cash? If it's been re-issued - move along, find the next big thing. [PS Why does everyone moan that no venues have CD players? You can buy a portable discman for a tenner - LESS THAN IT COSTS FOR ONE VINYLCARVER - why not play "original" CDs?]
  17. Spike Lee's "Crooklyn" has a great soundtrack... just like a fantastic mixtape, really.
  18. Well, yes - this I do understand. Maybe didn't phrase myself very well...
  19. Out of interest (and fascinating it is...) - would a demo be worth more or less than this? Can never quite get my head round the fact that demos are worth more, except for certain labels where they're worth less... (RCA etc.)
  20. Okay, been offered ONE of these... Anyone help with any of the rest a.k.a. BUMP!!!
  21. Here's a few 45s I'm after - a bit of a mix of everything really, soul, funk, jazz. Don't think anything is hugely rare... although I will no doubt be told otherwise! Any help much appreciated. Please PM me with price and condition. Many thanks in advance... Marie Knight - I Thought I Told You Not To Tell Them (Baton) The Apollas - Seven Days (Warner Bros) Judy Clay - Haven't Got What It Takes (Scepter) Wilson Pickett - Baby Don't You Weep (Liberty GERMAN) Lee Fields - Take Me Back (Angle 3) Connie Austin - Ball Of Fire (Federal) Chuck Jackson - What's With This Loneliness (Kent 6T 008 - UK 100 Club Anniversary) The Platters - Not My Girl (Kent 6T 003 - UK 100 Club Anniversary) Perry & the Harmonics - Do The Monkey With James (Mercury) Ernie K Doe - Here Come The Girls (Janus) Lionel Hampton - Greasy Greens (Glad Hamp) Leroy Harris - I'm Gonna Get You (Swan) Wendy Lynn - Can You Remember (King)
  22. Ideal Christmas gift a.k.a. BUMP!
  23. Yawn! Aye, just like there's a box of Parliaments "Rainy Day", Frank Wilsons etc etc etc - why bother paying over a fiver for anything - there's probably a box-load out there. Jeez, Fryer has managed to contact the people involved in the record and found... TWO. I'm sure he would have found more if there were more out there. Great record, wish my pockets were a bit deeper.
  24. Fans of "What Am I Gonna Do With You" should check another Russ Titelman song by The Cinderallas on Dimension. The flip to "Baby Baby" is the wonderful "(If This Is Just A Dream) Please Don't Wake Me". Weird how "Touch Me Hold Me Kiss Me" seems to have come out twice as a flip-side?
  25. After reading a certain other thread, I remembered I had a spare copy of this book for sale. THE NORTHERN SOUL TOP 500 This is the first edition, in nice condition - unread. Apparently it was re-printed because originals were selling for £50+ I'm after £15 + £3.50 postage PM me if interested...
