I despise the term “Northern Soul”. It was always soul music when I was growing up and have to admit that the term “Rare Soul” had always seemed to be a good description of the scene as it was in the very early seventies. My reasoning is that I can recall adverts for Blackpool Mecca being for “Rare Soul” and it’s probably fair to say that was true as the records Mr Levine was playing at the time were certainly not easily available to mere mortals. I’m pretty sure there was a photograph in Blues & Soul (Dave Godin's Column) with Mr Levine and others at the main entrance to The Mecca with a poster on the door advertising “Rare Soul”.

Nice story but I think you’re mistaken regarding “as great as soul people are not many give you owt for nowt”. Many years ago around 1970-71 at a fairly new friends flat listening to his records, one of many he played was Little Hank on London and I mentioned how much I liked it and wished that I owned it - he took it off his turntable and wouldn’t let me leave without it. Still have it to this day, thanks Phil Sawyer, not seen you for decades but will never forget you generosity.

In my opinion the Action label is a tough one to complete so well done Dave. I also consider the UK Sue label a toughie as well but both Soul City and Deep Soul issues are or were pretty easy - I completed both in the early seventies and there are some great records on those labels too. Having seen Dave’s success he’s inspired me to have another go at completing the Action label as I’d sort of given up. If you’re reading this Dave are all your Action records in good nick with clean labels and centres as today this is very difficult to do? Cheers Dave
