  1. Anything by Irma Thomas fits the bill for me, especially the early R'n'B..."Don't Mess With My Man", "You Ain't Hittin' On Nothing"..... and is Arthur Alexander a NO artist? certainly sounds it...

Looking at those suggested plays, I'm amazed they haven't been hired by GoldSoul

Just a suggestion - have you tried the US Library of Congress archives, online? I know a lot of US folk and blues (together with interviews/biog details) are on there, some of them dating back to the 1930s - perhaps there is gospel as well? I know I've heard Gospel tracks on Andy Kershaw's show, that he's said have been taken from the LoC archives. Never searched myself....good luck!
  4. Obviously, WPaulVanDyk has chosen his music scene very badly, 'cos as a rule, the NS crowd is a foul and ugly brood (why do you think soul do's are so dark?) .....so here's my suggestion; all promoters to issue paper bags, which can be put over the head on the announcement that the lights are going on
  5. Dobby Dobson's "Loving Pauper" is a superb rocksteady track, but the killer version, IMVHO, is by the Cool Ruler himself.....Gregory Isaacs

A couple of favourites of mine......... Where's My Money? - Willie Jones / Gerri Taylor - He's The One That Rings My Bell ....TOP DANCERS
  7. Another tune in 3/4 is "Long, Long Winter" by The Impressions (b-side of "Amen", I think).
  8. Yep Brett, I'm a complete old tart when it comes to Latin Soul...one shake of a marimba and I'm away . BTW, what's that great track you played out last year at Soulsville with the musical lift from "Am I the Same Girl"? Is that the one you're talking about?
  9. It was the Irma Thomas version of "Long After..." that was played. Prefer it to the Jimmy Radcliffe version, personally.
  10. Looking forward to listening to this at home......apart from obvious classic oldies, nothing seems to set a Northern dancefloor going better than Latin Soul! Perhaps a bit too tricky to stroke your chin to, though?
  11. i love the short Memphis guitar breaks on Willie Hightower's "Because I Love You". Top marks also for the snarling guitar figure in the Isley's "Why When the Love is Gone"
  12. Great thread BTW ........listen to the drummer on Debbie Taylor's "Don't Let it End" on GWP; this guy obviously had his three Shredded Wheat for breakfast before the session!
  13. Tomagoes "Really, Really Love You" - doesn't get much more stripped down that that (and all the better for it!)
  14. So many to choose from, but my personal fave is :- Little Richard - I Don't Know What You've Got (But You Got Me) Richard of York
  15. Here's a couple that always fill the floor at Manhattan Club at Harrogate (and did at it's predecessor, the Holgate in York) :- Say You'll be Mine - Rosebuds I Must be Losing You - Marion Stewart
  16. Some top, top suggestions one more that IMHO deserves a mention 3+3 - Isley Bros
  17. Had a problem with Dean Parrish's "Bricks, Bottles and Sticks" last night; couldn't get it out of my head that, in the last verse, our Dean sings :- "A big construction sign where my house used to stand, Soon they'll be mixing semen/B], water and sand" Couldn't help thinking that, with construction techniques like this, it's very likely that Dean would still find the site derelict in 2005!
  18. Full marks to Mr Bicknell for Jimmy Wallace's "I'll Be Back" In the same vein, I also love Chuck Jackson's version of "Any Day Now" (quick, fetch the hankies...) Two from Aretha:- I Can't Wait to See my Baby's Face Cry Like a Baby
  19. Old chestnut this, but Diana Ross DEFINITELY sings "As I pee out my window.." on Reflections.....
