Soul Intent, Todwick, Important Announcement
Have been asked by Geoff & Martin from Soul Intent if i could post this up on here as they're not members of this site but quite a few of they're regular punters are. "Due to circumstances beyond our control Soul Intent will now be moving to The Prince Of Wales at Renishaw near jct 30 of the M1" Soul Intent will still take place on the 2nd friday of each month as usual. Click on the following link for more info. https://www.modernsoul.net/ Realise this should have probably been posted in events but felt it would be read by more folks here & Geoff & Martin don't want anybody not realising & turning up at the old venue & having a wasted journey. Good luck with the new venue guy's, Mart...

Pages-heartaches & Pain
Hi Simon, Got an original of the Pages & everybody says it's a boot when they see it until they check the matrix. Like John says thats the only definite way to tell. A lot (but not all) of originals have offset labels so the centre hole cuts into the title. Mine dosen't so thats why folks think it's a boot. Also not all the boots are that smudgy so be careful. Funny thing is over the years i've seen more originals than boots so i'd say the boots are pretty scarce. Another one that throws a spanner into the works is ZZ & Co & to this day i still don't know the difference. Heard the so called boots were in fact originals & the so called originals were 2nd issues. Look very similar to the Pages boots. Any connection John?

Bloody hell Sean, you got a good memory. Pass the old club 60 every morning on my way to work on Shalesmoor & the old doorway is still there to the cellar bar. The upstairs is a printers & i'd love to ask if i could have a look downstairs one day but he'd probably think i was mad (no comments!). Remember John O'Hara as he used to live in a flat on Harcourt Rd just below my Dads house. Had a Transit van with O'Hara's Playboys painted on the side. O'Hara's playboys moved to Germany i think & had a big following there in the 70s & 80s. Wonder what John O'Hara is up to now? Probably doing backstreet clubs with the likes of Frank White if he's still with us, hope he is.

Small minded bout big records
Too right Sean. Here's another that fits in nicely with the above list. Give A Smile - Betty Wright - 10475 refosoul Back to the sound quality topic though. Given the choice between a 7" or a 12" i'll always go for the 12" if possible as the sound quality's far superior but what's the best, a 12" that plays at 33rpm or a 12" that plays at 45rpm? Obviously the grooves are closer together on the 45rpm copy but it spins faster so what's the difference from a sound point of view?

70's & Crossover Venues
Put the Modernism tag on hold for now Sean. Somehow it don't sound right for stuff that's over 30 years old if you know what i mean. Gonna concentrate on Quality (hey we got you kicking things off) ahead of Quantity at the new venue & probably only have 4 or 5 nights a year & hopefully try not to clash with anything else. As for the music policy, gonna try to keep it as varied as possible playing stuff from the 70s through to present day releases & if we get the opportunity to bring in DJ's who are new to the South Yorkshire folks we're up for it. Anyway back on topic. Seems to me that crossover is an uncomfatable partner on the Modern scene & the Northern scene too for many. The majority of the Northern crowd like there Northern with a bit of Crossover on the side & the same goes for most on the Modern scene too. Before anybody comes on to shout me down i think the Crown at Spondon proves my point perfectly. Central location, great room & most importantly bloody great music but it dosen't fit under the umbrella's we pigeonhole as Northern or Modern. Just a shame folks can't judge a record on it's merits rather than the year it was made.

Is Pitching Up Ok Or The Work Of The Devil
If the tools are there then use e'm if you want to. End of the day it is 2006 & if you can enhance the sound quality then go for it. Currently playing Thieves In The Night by The African Twins in my spots at-8, yes you read it right-8 & if my 1210s would go slower i'd play it at about -10. Why? simply because it's too fast (about 130 bpm) & it sounds better to my ears slowed down & is more dancefloor friendly. We're not getting any younger you know & these old bones can't keep the pace like they used to. Will post the normal version & the slowed (& edited) versions up if anyones interested when the clip players back up & you'll see what i mean. Another good example is Don't Break That Rule by Marvell Love. Sounded great in the late 70s/early 80s at the normal speed but so much better for todays scene at about -6. Think Sean Hampsey mentioned this on site before but can't find it but i'm sure he'll confirm it.
